UH Basketball: The Advisory Committee…

A five member advisory committee has been named to assist Herman Frazier in the search for the new head coach of the University of Hawaii men’s basketball program. Why were they chosen?… Do they know anything about basketball?… Who are they? (Can’t help much with the first two questions… but the internet helped to answer the third.)

University of Hawaii New Head Coach CommitteeHere’s a brief rundown on each member:

UH Basketball: The New Head Coach

Who could it be? Who should it be?…

Who knows… but evidently there are a ton of applicants with hopeful aspirations of become the leader of second biggest show in town (behind UH football). 71 to be exact. Among them is 25 year staff member Bob Nash and current Kentucky assistant coach Scott Rigot. Both intruiging choices, but why should we choose one or the other?… Here’s a quick rundown:

Bob NashBob Nash, University of Hawaii, Associate Head Coach
Why he should get it: Simply put, Coach Nash should at least have a CHANCE to coach the Warriors. Loyalty goes far in Hawaii and you can’t get more loyal than his 25 years which is longer than even Coach Wallace’s entire UH career (and that doesn’t include his playing days). And… His son is in his final season, so it’d be great to see the two together for at least one more year.

Why he shouldn’t: Well, it could be time for a change. Time to make the jump from local to national. Time to expect more than simply an NCAA berth and join the other “big-time” mid-majors in moving beyond the opening game. UH should strive to be Butler… not Jackson State or Niagara. Its not known at this point how much Coach Nash knows or how far he could possibly take them, but when you’ve been under the same guy with that same mentality for so long, its hard think otherwise.

2007 Final Four: WSU Cougars Advance!

2007 Final FourDespite getting off to a slow start, the Washington State Cougars finished the first half strong and came alive in the second half to secure a 70-54 victory of Oral Roberts.

Through the first 19:50, the Cougs “hung around”… then with under 10 seconds to go in the first half, WSU guard Taylor Rochestie hit a soft runner in the lane and Kyle Weaver stole the inbounds pass for a dunk as the buzzer sounded to start a 24-5 run that saw Washington State turn a 6-point deficit into a 13 point lead midway through the second half. They never looked back…

Senior forward Ivory Clark led the Cougs with 19 points and 5 “monster” blocks while the three starting guards combined for 37 points (Rochestie 15, Low 12, Weaver 10). Derrick Low (Iolani ‘04) finished 5-7 from the field (2-4 from three-point range) with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and no turnovers.

Washington State will face Vanderbilt on Saturday, March 17th for the right to go to the Sweet Sixteen. The Commodores easily took care of George Washington in the first round with a 77-44 victory.

Note: Honolulu Advertiser Sports Writer Wes Nakama is in Sacramento to follow Low’s progress in the opening round of the tournament. Read his article here, “National spotlight shining on ‘D-Low’” »

ILH Girls: Kapua scores 23 in a win for Mid-Pacific

Johnelle Kapua scored 23 points and led a strong second half comeback by the Mid-Pacifc Owls to defeat the Maryknoll Spartans at Damien Memorial Gym. Kapua scored more than half of her points from the freethrow line for the Owls who were able to get into the bonus early in fourth quarter and overcome a 19-16 halftime lead by the Spartans to earn their first win.

The highlight (and turning point) of the game came at the end of the first half when Owl guard Jordan Kealoha grabbed the rebound off a Maryknoll miss and hit a line-drive runner from half court as time expired to cut a 6 point Spartan lead down to just 3.

Senior guard Nicole Fu was impressive in her ILH debut scoring on a wide array of drives and leading the team with 17 points.

In the ILH Standings, Mid-Pacific moves to 1-0 and Maryknoll drops to 0-1.

ILH Girls: #2 Iolani defeats #1 Kamehameha, 49-33

In an intense game between the two top-ranked teams in the state, the Iolani Girls Basketball team came away with a decisive 49-33 win at home against the Kamehameha Warriors. The Raiders were able to attack an early zone by the Warriors with precise passing and good shooting to finish the first quarter with a 17-9 lead and then continued their offensive output throughout the second half as Kamehameha turned up the pressure in a man-to-man. On the defensive end, Iolani used a mixture of “man” and “zone” to keep the Warriors off-balanced throughout most of the game and were able to hold them to just 11 points in the second half.

Iolani was led by junior Jamie Smith and senior Alana Matayoshi who scored 17 and 14 points, respectively. Leading the way for Kamehameha were Analee Viena-Lota with 13 (on 3 three-pointers) and Lindsey Wong with 10 points.
