Kohala is a run and gun team...they need to get out in front to avoid Iolani's trapping defense. If Kohala can get an early lead and change the tempo of the game, the Cowboys could make it interesting. Iolani came down for this tourney 2 years ago (Nobriga)...Konawaena jumped to a double digit lead early. Three controversial charging calls killed momentum and altered Kona's intensity...Coach Doc comes down to the Big Isle and the referees think he's a god.

Howzit bigisle. As far as the football players, their season will end this Friday and their first day of basketball practice will be on Monday the 8th. With that said that doesn't give them much time to prepare as their game with Kohala will be Wednesday night.

The Raiders are known for being disciplined and patient on offense...sometimes too patient. Defensively, its tough to find another team within the state that can match the Raiders tenacity and aggression. This is where majority of their points should come from, in the transition. They lose big man Taylor Mounts but they are a much more athletic and quicker team than last year.

What type of team does Kohala have?

BIIF:

Waiakea definitely has a bunch of talent returning from last year - can't remember all the names. They do have a new coach (Paul Lee). Tall kid from KS-Hawaii has also transferred over, giving them height inside, which they really needed.

Konawaena loses four starters, but fill the starting five with experienced back ups from a year ago. Depth might be a concern. They also lack dominant scorers...which could be good or bad.

KS-Hawaii had a nice Jv program last year. They lose that nice senior class that has been together for a long time, but they will reload with juniors. Nelson Wong did step down as another coaching transition takes place there.

Honokaa loses their scoring venues from last year. They also had a nice Jv team last year that was complimented with a lot of height. It will be a question of who they rely on for their scoring. Nobody ever credits the Dragons preseason, but they always seem to put together a solid team every year.

Kealakehe will be led by Jordan Ursua and his freshman brother John (probably one of the most skilled freshman the BIIF will ever see). They also got a transfer guard from Nevada. Their only question will be their big men as some of the two sport athletes are nursing injuries.

Kohala has a three year 6'6 center, two time Div II POY Bautista, Honokaa (two year stater) transfer that can light it up from the outside, Parker (three year starter) transfer that did all their scoring. Not to mention role players that know thier limits and play within coach Fernandez's style. Very nice group if it all comes together.

St. Joe was really young last year and basically returns a very competitive team that upset division 1 teams last year. Deliberate style and over achieving players can give teams a hard time - should challenge Kohala in Div 2.

Basketball Jones...no doubt the Raiders a loaded this year, I'm not questioning that. Just saying that Kohala seems like a nice warm up game, but many teams will struggle with their style. Not to mention, Iolani will be missing some football players I assume.

IMHO, good points.

As I pointed out earlier, one of the reasons that Punahou moved their holiday tournament is to hopefully rival the Iolani Classic. That's fine. Matter of fact, that's great. Because it will give the local fans more chances to see exceptional high school basketball players and games. It will be tough to accomplish this, but not impossible.

Now someone please correct me if I am wrong, but to my knowledge I believe Punahou has the most invites to the Classic or at least one of the most invites of all local teams from both OIA and ILH, of course not counting Iolani. I honestly and truly believe that Punahou not being invited does not have anything to do with personal feelings towards Dan Hale being a coach there. Doc is a straight up guy and everyone knows that Doc and Tacon are very good friends. I highly doubt that there are any animosity built up between Hale and Iolani...Hale hasn't coached at Punahou long enough to warrant any kind of animosity. Remember, there are only 7 invitations available each year to local teams and everyone knows how many school's are out there.

So now with Punahou running their tournament concurrently with the classic it is only fitting that people will draw their own conlcusions as to why, what, when, where and how...the way I just did.

One thing I know for sure is

Blah blah blah. Punahou wanted a tournament to compete against the Iolani Tournament, get it. They don't want to combine. Know your facts. Lay off the I "think" if you don't know. Talking bubbles.

Hoopfanatic: Per not inviting Punahou, I agree with you it is odd (weird, strange, etc.) beyond all measure Iolani invited Punahou to their tourney on a regular basis up to the point Tacon was replaced by Hale. I hope it isn't personal, because that would be a degree of pettiness that would make me question the integrity of interscholastic basketball within the context of sportsmanship and open competition (did I mention I was an idealist?).

If I was a realist, I might posit Iolani doesn't want Punahou playing in their sandbox because it uses the tournament as a recruiting tool - holding out to their players an 'exclusive' of sorts.

Per Basketball Jones' thoughts on why and why not - a rotating invitation, therefore Punahou's invite is coming up - I like the logic and hope that that is true. But I heard that the last two years (the Hale era), while Iolani does talk to Punahou about this, they haven't worked it out.

I, for one, hope they do. Heck, I hope they cross-invite to each others tournaments, since they are the two best programs in ILH. I hope they combine to do one big one, and use Punahou's bigger gym, at the appropriate occasions.

Honestly, I think local basketball is the loser, especially going in to tough times, with tighter budgets (both program and parents). I'd like to see Hawaii's basketball highlighted (also Hawaii's culture, climate, etc.), and for that to happen, it would be good if Iolani invited Punahou to their tournament, and Punahou invited Iolani to theirs. In other words, leaving out one or more of the top teams in the state in either of these tournaments is bad. IMHO.

Howzit Jones, Menchies has been open for a few weeks now. It's very similar to Yogurtland. Supposedly their yogurt is more healthy and they have hot topping instead of just the normal ones at other places.

It's good if you like that kind of stuff. They had their grand opening a few weeks ago. There was radio coverage and live promos. On that day, the owners of Menchies decided to donated 50% of their profits to charity which is always a nice thing.

Teams in the St. Joe/Waiakea tourney:
Ka'u, Kona, Iolani, Kohala, KS-Hawaii, Kealakehe, St Joe, Kaahumanu, HPA, Waiakea, Laupahoehoe, Pahoa, Keaau, Waimea, Hilo.

Interesting first roudn game slates Iolani and Kohala. Kohala is loaded with talent as a Div 2 school, but a definite Div 1 quality team...won't be no walk thru for the Raiders. Winner would face Ka'u/Kona winner...could be a shoulda, woulda 3rd place game last season in states.....

There has to be some mainland teams in the Punahou tourney...and I would bet that they are decent teams as well. Not the caliber of the Classic teams, but very good teams. Leroy Lutu, Jr., who now plays for UH came down a couple of years ago with his high school.

What was the last year that Punahou was invited? Because to my knowledge Punahou, as well as the rest of the ILH Division 1 will get an invite every so many years. This is to give each school an opportunity to play in the presitigious tournament.

This is Coach Hale's 3rd year and the second year that their tournament will run concurrently with the Classic. Who knows? Maybe they had an invite coming last year or this year but declined because of their tournament dates changing.

Hey backpick, isn't it quite ironic that ever since Coach Tacon was not retained at Punahou, Iolani has not offered an invite to Punahou.

So instead of watching the Iolani Classic from the sidelines, they chose to be proactive and create their own tournament.

If I recall correctly, the last two Punahou coaches, Tacon & Lum, were regulars at the Iolani Classic.

I think this is Coach Hale's 3rd year at Punahou and they have not been in the Classic yet.

There definitely is an underlying story behind this. We can only speculate, but it does look personal.

okay...but id hate to be mckinley
going into a tournament as big as this one and they wont even play one of the elite teams.
totally defeats the purpose of playing in it.

...great analogy, backpick. I asked the coaches at Punahou about moving the Punahou Holiday tournament to the same week as the Iolani Classic and the reply was, "...we wanted to have a tournament that rivals the Iolani Classic."

I did not have a response. At all.

To be honest, I very much enjoyed attending Punahou's tournaments...but I won't be attending anymore for obvious reasons.

Hey PrincessVictoria (all two posts of you), back off and have fun at the Punahou Tournamanet when you're watching Radford play Thompson Acadamy. That will leave more open seats for the appreciative fans of the Iolani Classic.

Why does Punahou have a tournament the same time as the Classic? Maybe Punahou Pride could give us the asnwer to that question? It's like watching reruns of the Golden Girls when the Victoria Secret Fashion Show is on.
