Good for Kona and good for Coach Kalani, Coach Shannon and the Big Island Girls. I hope Konawaena honors the Kealakehe teachers of the past when there wasn't a high school at Kealakehe! My mom, Lance Kobayashi's dad, Will Murakami, V.P Mills, Mr. & Mrs. Richard Nakano, Winefred Kimura, Jeanette Tinnel (daughter of Gabby Inaba), Rodger Hayakawa, etc.

Thanks H!

coach brian, exactly! plus, all the families in waikoloa village, add the ohanas that live in the kona district, hawaiian ocean view estates, damned! kona is going to go places! robbies boy, brent, what grade and school is he going to? suggested to him in the last league i officiated, to take the ball "TO" the basket, rather than away. dont avoid the contact.(which is what he was doing) told him that hes not going to hurt anybody, (6'6") his friends are still going to respect him. OOPS! came down and power moved "TO" the basket, and it looked like bowling pins falling in succession! and, it was clean!

I hope so Hoopwaiian! All the caucasion blood walking around up there in the skyline should make for taller players soon!

Also, Randy will be running his PGU again but unfortunately, my son will not be there. That is a great program. Good luck coaches!

@ Hoopwaiian

Everybody who knows basketball in Hilo knows you got the shaft on that league. No one more dissapointed than Randy, Kalani (New B&G Head) and I. We were looking forward to that league to materialize.

Along with the league you had plans for, do you think Hilo should reinstate the 19U league at B&G? I sent all my players to that league to play against the future Vulcans and graduated high schoolers to play at a higher level. That league ended when B&G filed for BK.

As for the drive, I was fortunate to play in the Hilo leagues to see the difference between Kona and Hilo. That made the drive easier knowing the players would see how the game can and should be played. No knock against my home town but there are zero colleges with basketball teams in Kona to play in the open leagues. In Hilo you have graduates, players who got girl-friends pregnant and worked instead of playing college ball, players who lost eligibility, players who got cut. All of these players made for a better league. The drive was a "No Brainer" for me.

brian, when i moved back in 05', got hired by the boys and girls club of hilo. had 150 prospective members ready to sign up for the 11 and 12, 13 and 14 year old basketball leagues. idea got shut down! 150 new members! in those two age brackets alone, within 3 weeks of hire! walked away. heard the guy who shut it down is no longer there. what was VERY IMPRESSIVE was that both the stingrays and your teams committed to drive 100 miles one way to hilo, play two games, and then drive your teams back, another 100 miles, every week! thats sacrifice on YOUR part! as you mentioned above, wherever and whatever it takes to get court time. wonder how many coaches would give up their saturdays for hoops, 100 miles away!......... also noticed robbie shropshires son. would like to get my hands on him!

like brian, i noticed also that the stingrays do pretty well on the mainland. better than most of the wahine teams! and as a player, every hot dog, chili bowl, loco moco plate that they prepare and sell, all serves a purpose and goal. together, as a team! and when they think back upon all the hard work and time and practices during live games, as for me, thats when character comes out. and believe me, whatever the critics have to say, no can deny the fact of four state finals in five years! did i mention two state championships? i see the kona and kealakahe boys high school basketball teams making a dramatic turn around in the not to distant future. i personally like coach donny awa's style of coaching. more of a mainland style tempo! players are not afraid to shoot! tells me alot.

Born and raised in Kona. The girls have found ways to compete and have fun when together so it's all good.

@ Hawn

The boys have not had the same luck as the girls. Maybe if Micah Dunhour went to Kona it might have worked but I hope to see the Wildcats in the STATE Tournament and not just the BIIF Tournament.

I have to agree with you about the travel team part, its unfortunate but your right, will the kona boys be looking at other players from different teams playing on their travel team while they look from the bench?

I hope that one day we can watch them compete in a Biif Tourney, Im not sure who they will have coming out of their program, but good luck!

What it often comes down to is simple: do you love the game so much that you give it your best and fullest commitment? Most kids can't say yes to that. It takes too much time from their video games and Facebook chats.

Kids who love the game and put their sweat and effort into get my respect. Doesn't matter where they play or how much that does (or does not) translate into wins. It's always been about the love and, later, spreading that love. Understanding the difference between working on your game (love) and wasting time trying to dunk for an hour (pride).

@ Hoopwaiian

Your're saying Galdeira was developed in Kona? She was HUGE when she played one against five playing for Kamuela.

Kealakehe District
1) Awa-Williams
2) Brown
3) Kimitete (although at Kealakehe, she does live in the Konawaena district
4) Both Liftees
5) Jessica Hanato (maybe on the border)
6) Kaupu

Do they win without these players?

Not sure but Kealakehe does some of that with Football so maybe fair is fair. The stingrays developed some of these girls but not the younger Liftee or Kaupu. They were made to play by Alan Liftee and Kim Brown was developed by Terry Takata.

For some reason, travel teams for stingrays works for the girls. The boys on the other hand.... The boys started with a mix of this group and have not recovered yet;

1) Roxburg (Kohala)
2) Ursua (Kealakehe)
3) Utrera (Kealakehe)
4) Awa (Girl's basketball)
5) Ellis (at Kamehameha Kapalama)

None of these players are at the Konawaena boy's program. Who works with the Konawaena boys program? I've spoken to parents and suggested they find training any where they could. Kalakaua, stingrays, UH Hilo, every where. If the trend continues, you may find other players from other schools starting and receiving playing time while Konawaena students watch from the bench.

It works from time to time but it is a huge gamble if you trying to build outside of the district. I did NOT say recruiting because I don't care. All I care about is for both Kona teams to dominate the BIIF and go 1-2 to the state tournament.

People have stated that I don't like Kona. Right! Not only have I played and coached there but I have a love for the history of Konawaena Basketball. The last time I was there we were ordering uniforms and a suggestion came to me to use more black than green. NO WAY!! We received our first uniforms from the University of Hawaii, Yes, Wildcats! I was told of this story when I was six years of age. The colors are Green and White and no dominant black was coming to Konawaena while I was there.

I hope the boy's program will recover quickly so we can view them from the stands at the state tournament.

okiwaiian & hoopwaiian, idk if kona develops good players! I think they just have athletic players in their program. Honetly their isnt much to pick from, they are the only team that plays year round in Kona. If you carefully watched them, you would see that most of them are not fundamental. But boy they are a bunch of athletic type of girls ballin.

Developed players to me are disciplined fundamental players with great bball I.Q. that adhere to the coach, thats just me.

I think the girls run a great system and it works for them. As for the State Championship game.... WOW! 2nd half no one rebounded the ball or even tryed, looked like they were tired and we could go on but if we all saw that game all we can say is WOW! (no comment!)

No doubt they will take the BIIFs again, but again I dont think they will be challenged at all. All I can say is Good Luck BIG island girls! Represent!

i wonder how that talent got developed? been home 5 years. watched kona girls play in 4 state finals in that short time span. to do that over such high-powered programs as punahou, iolani kam etc. if your a coach, you know what it takes to get there. yes, talent is a huge factor but to guide and steer a team to four state finals in 5 years is definitely not luck! and konas 5th final is not that far behind!

Talent is what maked them good. Anyone who saw last year's Konawaena-Lahainaluna game cannot convince me that either team has great coaching. Rickard kept his star center in the game in the first half versus puns with the lead allowing her to get her 4th foul. That is unheard of. Even youth league coaches wouldn't let that happen. As for Konawaena they play with a stacked deck. Anyone who saw the championship game on OC16 will agree. Who runs a 50+ foot backdoor play with 3 player watching from halfcourt with a few seconds left? Can anyone say helpside defense? How can that work? That was one of the worst plays drawn up out of a timeout ever called in history. Talking stories with lots of local coaches they all agree that Kona develops good players but in game coaching and game time strategy leaves a lot to be desired.

coaching! to be able to keep them together, year round is awesome! not easy! the players are loyal to the AWAS. ate dinner at a couple of mens 35 and over games in kona. guess who was running the concession? the stingrays! ( pretty damned good, too! )bobbi would jump out from behind the grinds and handle the ball for a game, while bradda donny would clean up the boards underneath, all the while the girls dished out grinds! thats how they raise some of their kala to travel.beautiful! and so, what makes kona girls so great? AWAS! coaching!

With 2 courts side by side coach Quintero coached both team taurasi and 15&under from the middle of courts. Maiki was on the far side of court practicing with the 2nd team while dawnyell's 15&under team scrimmage team taurasi's first team in a coach breakdown format. During the 1hr,the 15&under outplayed team taurasi. I was looking forward to watching both girls in action but got side track in listening and watching coach Quintero. Learn a couple of stuffs that was the opposite of what I was taught.... And in general it made sense. To all future girls who get a chance to play for coach Quintero you better be mentally tough if not....... Stay home!!!
