Excuse me, lads. I was a classmate of Frankie G. back in 1963-64. (In fact, if I recall correctly, I was his homeroom president under Bro. Fahey.) It's great, after all these years, to catch up. Give 'em hell, Frankie1

Frankie Gonzales would excel in today's zip-quick game, speed-agility being Frankie's greatest assets. Walter Wong 1912-2002 was good friends with Big Island's greatest sports enabler Walter C.K. Victor 1904-1975. Both men were fundamentalists, no fancy dan stuff which are requisite in today's much more complex geometry game. Aloha, --Curt

Between the leg dribble was a no-no for St. Louis coach Walter Wong 1912-2002. Such dribble today is strategic & commonplace. This one move shows you the evolution of basketball over the past 45 yrs. Aloha, --Curt

Walter Wong was a fundamentals kind of coach. No fancy dan stuff. Today's coaches have the blessing of worldwide interaction to better the strategy/logistics of the game. Frankie Gonzales would excel in today's game. Frankie's greatest gift was quickness, & wow, was he quick!! Between the leg dribble to evade the defender, behind the back dribble to pass off to the open mate -- wow, these are Frankie's strengths. Aloha, --Curt

The great Frankie Gonzales born 1949 once did an around the back dribble to throw off the defender, & amazingly, conservative coach Walter Wong 1912-2002 didn't chastise Frankie for it. Aloha, --Curt

You do realize how stupid you sound right Curt? You are trying to tell us that Frankie only had the ball stolen from him once in his life. That is better than Magic, Kidd, Pistol, MJ, Stockton, you can go on and on. Were you at every game that he ever played?
You know that I only missed one shot in my entire life. It was a half court shot and it went in and out. At the FT line I was a career 1345/1345. Pretty amazing huh! The great Orville Redenbacher wrote about me in his book, pg 78, par. 3, line 28. LOOK IT UP!

Bill O'Rear born 1955 would be so gratified with Frankie Gonzales' style/level of play, team-first, never me-first. Whatever Frankie did, Frankie always did for the betterment of his Crusader team. Bill could get an inkling of Gonzales' calibre because Bill played in pickup games with Gonzales' Hilo analog, Sam Wilson, whom Gonzales shut down in the 1967 State High School title game [St. Louis vs. Hilo High]. The only player who ever stole the ball from Gonzales was Oakland Bishop O'Dowd's point guard Mike Caruso, who later starred at Creighton U., & who today is a well-known coach/pundit.

Like the great Central American baseballers, Ah Chew's intimate hoop mate was the nearest implement. As with sticks for bats/pebbles for balls, Ah Chew's receiver was the telephone pole, his linear guide was the road's center stripe, his defenders were the falling leaves during a windy turn/etc. Thank you, --Curt

Frankie Gonzales is our quiet/humble sacred kin who blends into the tapestry of life. You find no other finer common saint than sweet Frankie Gonzales. It is hard to imagine that Frankie led our greatest prep hoop squad from the Haw'n Islands, St. Louis High 1967, which was so indestructible that even as sophomores, Dunnam/Nick's St. Louis High [in 1965-1966] beat UH D1 jayvees. Incredulous!! Not seen before or since [prohibited today as unfair matchup]!! Thank you, -Curt
