Do not forget the system at Lahainaluna. They have trio of freshman that have grown up in the Luna 'system" These freshman were beating up on all the JV teams on the Big Island. The Bates twins will be something to reckon with. They also have an 8th grader that could be the best player to come out of Lahaina.

My opinion is that it is too early to tell. Some of the good girls in club play don't make an impact on high school teams cause the difference in styles. Club teams have 8 to 10 deep and almost all can do something special. In High school, they are lucky to have a strong 5!!! The exception is the "System" teams like Punahou, Iolani, Konawaena, Kaiser and Roosevelt who have girls that play in the "System" so by the time they get to high school the girls know that system. Although Iolani/Punahou has no real farm system they have close ties to outside clinics, plus they have the luxury of getting talent for education.

Some will be selected on size alone. An example is Alohi Robbins at Kamehameha. Last year she was raw

Most Freshmen at ILH schools are really sophomores!

BOTTOM LINE IS THERE IS NO FRESHMEN GIRL IN THE STATE THAT CAN TAKE OVER A GAME AND DOMINATE.

Coach Taylor has had an amazing run and his staff was second to none. In my opinion their streak would have come to a crashing end even if they stayed on. Who besides Mysha do they have? Their 2 bigs are tall, young and scrawny. Their 8 guards are short, young, and scrawny. Their middle school players lack athleticism and skills. All equal to a train wreck.

On the other hand the warriors boast legitimate sized post players ranging from 5'10"-6'1"(6) who are also multi-sport athletes. Their guards are tall, athletic, and experienced. They are also in the running to acquire 2- 5'6" incoming 7th graders who are also multi-sport talented. I have spoken to their parents and their choices of schools do not include Punahou.

The promised land could be inevitable no matter who the coach is!

Punahou may not make the playoffs, but that's mostly due to Coach Taylor stepping down. Even when Punahou have had down years, they still made states. I think it's something like 15 years straight?

And when was the last time Kamehameha had an impact on Girls Basketball? 2002? It may happen, but until it does, it's hard to believe.

Look at the list of candidates who applied for the Kamehameha job:

Jesse Victorino
Scotty DeSilva
Rae Self
Chi Mok
Greydon Espinda
Shanna Dacanay

Are you thinking one of these people will lead Kamehameha to the promised land?

Just back from a quick visit to the St. Francis/Merv Lopes Classic. Mid-Pacific girls over Kamehameha-Hawaii easily. The visiting Warriors never quite adjusted to the physical play and officiating style. Better they adapt now, in December, than at the state tourney.

To be honest with you, the language is so specific in the seedings and match-ups, the committee doesn't have much play.

I would just look at last year and use the same criteria for placing the teams. Your draw looks good.

I don't like how teams get byes in basketball. If you look at all levels I don't see teams getting byes. The NBA does not have byes. The NCAA tournament does not have byes. Basketball is meant to be played out. The seedings and matchups based on the seedings should be enough of a reward.

I understand that money maybe the biggest reason for 12 teams, but I still prefer 16.

Based on your draw, the side opposite Punahou will have Kona, Lahaina, Farrington, and Iolani. That is a tough side to come out of. If a team comes out of that half, then beats Punahou (assuming they make it there) in the finals, that would really be a worthy state champion.

HoopFanatic, I couldn't agree with you more on the Girls State Tournament seeding.

If Roosevelt wins the OIA
1-Punahou
2-Kona
3-Lahainaluna
4-Roosevelt

If Farrington wins the OIA
1-Punahou
2-Kona
3-Farrington
4-Lahainaluna

I can't remember the last time the OIA was seeded #4 in the Girls State Tournament. I don't think it will ever happen.

If Roosevelt wins the and is awarded the #4 seed I have the match-ups like this:

OIA #6 Aiea vs. MIL #2 Baldwin winner vs #1 Punahou

OIA #4 Kailua vs. BIIF #2 Waiakea
winner vs. #4 Roosevelt

OIA #3 Kalani (if they lose tonight) vs ILH #2 Iolani
winner vs #3 Lahainaluna

OIA #5 Moanalua vs. OIA #2 Farrington (if they win tonight)
winner vs #2 Konawaena

What kind of match ups you got HoopFanatic?

If Farrington wins then I would have them seeded #3. But if Roosevelt wins I would seed them #4 and this why. Lahainaluna had a much more impressive preseason than Roosevelt, beating MPI if I am not mistaken and also taking Kona down to the wire.

Roosevelt had a very erratic season and just got hot at the right time.

Lahaina had a better league record than Roosevelt.

But even if Roosevelt wins the OIA, I would be very surprised if they seed the OIA Champ #4. That would put Farrington, Lahainaluna, and Kona on the same bracket.

That would be logical if the committee did that, but that would make good matchups for Punahou in the semis and the HHSAA really wants good crowds. So, I can see the committee seeding Lahaina #4 for that very reason.

Agree with most of the seedings. The only one I might change would be Lahainaluna being the 3rd seed and the OIA getting the fourth. But, I wouldn't be disappointed w/ the way you seeded them.

Good Job!!!

Personally I think the HHSAA's method of placing and seeding teams is flawed. I understand that part of creating and promoting a state tournament is to create interesting match-ups that the fans want to watch. I think this is the idea behind placing the #2 and #3 teams from the same league opposite the league champion.

I am guessing that many people don't want to see the same teams playing for the 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th time until the finals or at the worst, semi-finals.

This is written into the guidelines that the HHSAA uses to place teams.

But, the idea should be to place the teams based on the quality of the teams.

I also wish the teams would expand to 16 teams (OIA-7; ILH-3; BIIF-3; MIL-3). Then no one will get a bye which I think is silly. This is not football where they need a bye.

Then the HHSAA committee should seed the teams straight up, 1-16 regardless of league.

This is how I would seed:

1-Punahou
2-Kona
3-Farrington
4-Lahainaluna
5-Iolani
6-Roosevelt
7-Kalani
8-Waiakea
9-MIL #2
10-Kailua
11-Moanalua
12-Aiea

Good insight grassshack. The seedings should come out on Sunday. It usually is faxed to the athletic departments around lunchtime and made public around 3-4pm normally.

As for Kona, they are too talented, and the BIIF is weak this year to really show on the court.

Depending on who wins the OIA, this is how I would seed them.

If Roosevelt wins the OIA
1-Punahou
2-Kona
3-Lahainaluna
4-Roosevelt

If Farrington wins the OIA
1-Punahou
2-Kona
3-Farrington
4-Lahainaluna

I agree, it is not ethical and it may (or may not) show favoritism towards a certain player. If Kona has internal problems, it doesn't show on the court, and that's all that should matter at this point. Onward to the State Tourney...when do the seedings come out?

That is a great point. But just because it is hidden or not known, it doesn't make it right.
Also, often rules are prehistoric and outdated. Just because it's not against the rules doesn't mean it's ethical.
I know it isn't against the rules. But providing a service only to one player seems to be a form of favortism, don't you think??????
