KBABY11 wrote, "Galdeira may not have the best grades but they are high enough for her to play and thats all that coounts."

HAHA, LOL! All that counts is getting a 2.0 or barely above? And that is at Konawaena which is in the bottom third academically in the entire state of Hawaii.

I can see it now for many of those girls with a 2.0 at Kona, Wal-mart, the burger joint, Ken's, the Movie Theater, Pac-Sun, HERE I COME!

It's the mentality alone that sets up these girls to fail.

Why can't the goal be a 3.5, getting help from the teachers, parents, counselors, and coaches? Oh, I know, winning basketball game (girls no less) is more important than quality of life for her future!

This is what kbaby11 said, "Yah they have set plays but if they dont need it they dont use it cause they can get something from not using it.."

And this is one of the reasons why the Kona Players are not playing at the Div 1 level. Can you name a single player playing Div 1 ball from Kona right now?

I have heard college recruiters say that Kona's girls don't really understand reads during the game. They get by since they are bigger, faster, and more athletic. It's not like they are smarter.

If I am wrong, then why aren't more Kona girls playing D-1 ball? I mean, if they are so talented, you would think at least 2 or 3 would have made it in the past few years, don't you think KBABY11?

I guess when you goal is to have grades that "are only high enough to play" I can understand why Konawaena is such a poor academic goal.

The #1 goal should always be grades. If my kid was doing all that he/she could do, then any grade is sufficient. But, if every service isn't being taken to achieve the maximum grade possible, there is no way my kid even gets to play basketball. That is not a school rule, it would be a family rule.

Your kind of thinking is prehistoric and irresponsible. When is barely getting by the goal?

So you are saying since this is the first time that allowing a kid to live with their coach has been made public, it's okay since it has been done before?

I will say it straight, you guys are ASS-BACKWARDS overthere with your thinking.

I have yet to seen anyone make one statement how allowing only one kid to live with them doesn't show favortism and create a sense of unprofessionalism.

Shes the kine of coach who doesn't need 2 tell kona wat needs 2 b done they kno wat needs 2 b done... Yah they have set plays but if they dont need it they dont use it cause they can get something from not using it... Galdeira may not have the best grades but they are high enough for her to play and thats all that coounts... I'm confident that they will win BIIFs next year actually im positive they will... Yah she has things 2 work on but she has 3 years more in her high sku career... I think they cud beat Lahaina with out galdeira actually cuz they still had the awas, the hanato-smiths, uulopa brown, and wall...

I don't think it should be told on here. Here is some advice to all the kids. Freshman year is very important. If you start off with a good GPA, it normally keeps improving. But, if you start with a poor GPA, even A's and B's will only allow it to improve a little.

For example, if you have a 2.0 your entire freshman year, it would take a perfect 4.0 the next year just to be at the 3.0 level.

And honestly, how many kid who get a 2.0 will really get a 4.0 for the entire next year?

And imagine if the GPA is sub 2.0! HILOHOOPS, I think you can imagine just what her GPA is.

And I do agree that the competition is very poor now. Galdeira gets by on athleticism in my opinion. That is why when she played with some older girls the other week, and in the mainland tournament the other day, she has a much harder time.

When she is put against girls with similar size, strength, or athleticism, she needs to rely on her skills which need to be improved.

aloha hoop fans,

Galdeira is such a great talent, so very athletic. I agree that she has alot to learn (skills/fundamentals), but that also goes to show how bad the competition is around the state (shame on you Coaches) if talent alone can win the State title. By the way, what is Galdeira's GPA?

What was awa supposed to do? Um, be a real coach and either tell her parents that it is inappropriate, or offer that service to all the kids. That is what you should do.

The way she coaches? They run almost no sets. It's like they just roll out the ball and say, "go play." It's no coincidence that none of her kids play at the D-1 level. Many college coaches have noticed that when the Kona girls play on traveling teams (other than big island teams), they struggle to play in an system.

Can you name me a single D-1 program that doesn't use sets and run a systematic offense?

Kona wins because they have the most talent. Nothing wrong with that. But unlike elite coaches such as Doc, Kona only wins when they have the most talent. When they have above average they struggle in states, 2008, 2006, etc.)

Without Galderia, this team would not have beaten Lahaina.

And whoa, you really went out on a limb to say Kona girls will win next year! You are a prophet.

I heard that some girls from Alaska, Texas, Brazil, Germany, and anywhere that has girls basketball talent is going to live at the Awa's. I heard they may start charging rent for food and housing.

But, they can't charge any money for tutoring services though. The job being done with Galdeira is terrible, look at her grades, haha!

Well personaly i think kona will take it for D1 girls Kamehameha for DII girls... Um i gotta say Waiakea for D1 bois and Kohala for DII bois... but i dont think its cheating that galdeira came 2 kona 2 live with her coach cuz she wanted 2 go kona so coach bobbie made her dreams come true... Wat was awa suppose 2 do just reject galdeira and say she can't come to konawaena... So i think that Awa shud have been the coach of the year cuz shes really awsome the ways she coaches is the best i've ever seen... she makes them work as hard as the possibly can... but even without galdeira this team wud do gud cuz a lot of these girls have played together before galdeira came to konawaena and they do well together like the hanato-smith sisters, the awas, and uulopa... so they already have their chemistry... but galdeira just added a better chemistry...

If the team is properly prepared, it shouldn't matter what day the game is. Playing a game on a Monday is genius. The kids' bodies are rested, and they don't have the grind of attending classes all week.

By the time the regular season is being played, the teams should be properly prepared, and the really well coached teams just need to fine tune and tweak. A good coach and a good team doesn't need so many days to prepare.

Look at college, there is a thing called BIG MONDAY. Many games are played on Mondays.

Many college coaches only have walk-throughs on Saturday, and often, coaches in the Big East, give the players Sunday off. What is the difference?

Your method mimics procrastinating, like a kid waiting until the last moment to study and prepare for a test.

The status quo teaches the team to prepare and take every moment/practice seriously.

Once again, this is genius and really challenges the kids and the coaches to take their learning to the Quadrant D level, which is what educators should all do.

For the first time in Biif history the BIIF decided to have boy's b-ball games played on a Monday which is STUPID. How is a team able to prepare for their opponent if school is out on saturday and sunday. They were times when a school either played on a friday or saturday and then had to play that following Monday.

The BIIF season next year will go to the old East/West format. For the boys, the bulk of the talent will be on the east side as Waiakea, KS-Hawaii, Keaau, Hilo, St. Joe will fill a nice schedule. For the girls, Kona might be untested during the regular season as the West is made up of Kohala, Honokaa, Kealakehe, HPA and Kau.

96720...I believe the BIIF rule is that if a player transfers, they have to sit out 1 year in the sport(s) that they played at the previous school. This prevents players from transferring to better teams year to year.

for me i think the pick for coach of the year was good. even if keaau didnt go states and didnt compete for BIIF, they did great. they came from the bottom and beat one of the contenders for the BIIF title.

POY- Leah Galdeira

1st Team All-Biif

Kara Hanato-Smith The General and leader for the konawaena team. Her presence on the court was a plus especially when you have a talented team like kona this year. Only negative feature was that she did not excel in the states.
Dawnyelle Awa-Maybe the most versatile player in the Biif this year. She will be a better college player then Lia by the time they graduate
Kanisha Bello- The best shooter in the Biif by far. Reallly needs to work hard this off-season if she wants to take it to the next level. Only downfall this year was that she played like a junior and not a senior, At times did not have the killer instinct to take over and insisted on laying back and letting the game come to her.
Rayleen Naki-Was asked to lead her team this year, and thats what she did. If Kamehameha-Hawaii did what was expected and joined the d1 league the biif would of gotten 3 automatic berths in the states and you would of seen keaau joining kona and waiakea.
Leah Galdeira-If she plays all 4 years without getting hurt she will be the best player of all-time to have put on a jersey in the Biif. She really needs to work on her dribbling and outside shot if she wants to be a starter on a competitive D1 team.
