States 2011

Iolani has the clear path to title game and should be rested for saturday night's game. Tournament time will raise their level of play and wont play down. In the finals, I see them in a close game because they will make it close by playing not to lose and sitting on the ball, giving their opponent a chance to get back into the game late. But I see them winning a real close game with their experience and system. I see the #2 guard or Saito taking the last shot with bigs crashing the boards for possible put back to win game at the buzzer. Not sure if Lahaina has enough talent or experience to test the Raiders or can handle the big stage. Its the Raiders tournament to lose.

Kamehameha if hot from the outside can beat anyone. Their scheme on both ends of the court matches up with Iolani and no doubt Micah is the best all around Hawaii HS basketball player. It will great to see his final tournament run at an other championship. Enos and their 3 point bombers should make it interesting. I see an all ILH semi in this bracket with cinderella AOP - what a story and unreal job by Marciel.

Iolani - Kamehameha final. Like the regular season, should come down to the last couple possessions. I see a big shot or turnover deciding this game. Or can Micah carry the Warriors on his back and go out in style. Cant wait for Wed to get games started.

Kahuku-Hilo very interesting matchup. Hilo plays FAST. In a single-elimination tournament, it is very difficult to prepare for a team like Hilo - it took Kam-Hi three games to truly develop a great gameplan for it.

dodger, my mistake. I was looking at the brackets and forgot that Kahuku is the second-place team, not the third, from the OIA, so I corrected that in the post on Hawaii Prep World.

But it's true that in years past, the third-place team did get a favorable draw.

Luna86, it's so hard for us on Oahu to get a feel for the Lunas. They're usually athletic and tough, but this year? I'm looking forward to seeing them. Sam Kiek (sp) was really effective last year, just didn't have a lot of help. Saw him at states and was very impressed.

The Farrington side of the bracket is loaded. Those games will be barn burners.

I don't think Iolani will be challenged until the final round. It's about matchups and the teams that are most likely to give Iolani problems are in the Farrington bracket.

@Pupule Paul
Great post. A lot of great insight from the beginning of the season to the end. I agree that the #3 OIA might have it "easier" than the #1 or #2. Moanalua might have to play three ILH teams to win it all while Kahuku plays very athletic teams before it can meet Iolani. Lahainaluna (23-5) played in the Hilo tournament losing to KH by 25 in the finals. It beat Hilo by 10 in the opening round. They played in their own tourny during Christmas beating two and losing to one mainland team. I agree that the seeding really does not matter that much other than 1 and 2 in DII. Seabury Hall is not the same team without Pagano but still could surprise people.

Net notes on state brackets
http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/basketball/net-notes-on-state-brackets/

Now that the seedings and brackets have been released for the state basketball tourney, some thoughts.

• No, no, please … after you. As usual, the third-place team from the OIA has, on the surface, an easier path to the semifinal round than the league’s champion. Kahuku, which lost to Moanalua in last night’s OIA title game, won’t have it easy. Hilo is a dangerous team that ascended quickly during the BIIF season and nearly won the title in a league that is traditionally deep with quality teams. Then Lahainaluna awaits the winner, another team that is a borderline mystery unit. The Lunas have athleticism and talent, but is largely unproven, having stayed on Maui through the holiday tournament season on Oahu.

OIA champ Moanalua, seeded No. 2 (only league champions that draw byes are defined as “seeds”), clearly benefits from an opening-round bye. However, AOP or Roosevelt will be their opponent. AOP has been ranked among the Top 6 in the state for most of the season. Roosevelt has been a Top 10 team for most of the season, as well. The same can’t be said of Hilo or Lahainaluna, which is why Kahuku may have an equally good chance — or better — of reaching the semifinal round.

Of course, if Kahuku reaches the semifinals, No. 1 ‘Iolani — the defending state champion — is favored to be there waiting.

• Gauntlet in Kalihi. The Farrington bracket is intriguing, and not just because five of the six entries are ranked in the Top 10. AOP and Roosevelt met once this season, at Moanalua’s Na Menehune Holiday Classic. AOP won handily, but mainly because Roosevelt split time between its starters and reserves. It was a move that coach Steve Hathaway deemed necessary to save some fuel, so to speak, for his starters in what was a long, weary nonconference journey. So, the two teams have not, really, met yet with their best ammunition on the floor.

The other opening-round game, Kamehameha versus Baldwin, is a tough matchup for the Bears. The MIL runner-up wasn’t quite on par with elite teams during nonconference tournament play on Oahu two months ago, though Gabriel Ross stood out as an aggressive, attacking scoring guard.

If Kamehameha advances past Baldwin, third-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii awaits. This, to me, is the most difficult of the potential pairings in the quarterfinal round. Both teams have been among the Top 6 statewide most of the season. Kamehameha has spent the year hovering among the Top 3, deservedly so. KS-Hawaii knocked off Punahou in December on Oahu, lost a key reserve (Adam Andrade) to injury in the process, then had some speed bumps back in the BIIF against a rough slate of foes.

The difference between the 2 and 3 seeds (Farrington bracket) is slight at best. Moanalua, which was 6-6 in the OIA before the playoffs, will have to deal with either AOP or Roosevelt. Conversely, AOP or Roosevelt will have to deal with the speedboys of Moanalua. KS-Hawaii will likely face Kamehameha, a state finalist last season that returned almost its entire roster intact, including co-player of the year Micah Christenson.

The one factor that is probably overlooked by fans and/or HHSAA committee members is this: In the BIIF, every bit of contact is whistled for a foul. It’s normal there, tradition in some ways. On Oahu, much more contact is permitted, particularly at midcourt. This is a big reason why KS-Hawaii, with its swarming traps and intense on-ball pressure, was so comfortable during its swing through the St. Francis/Merv Lopes Classic in December. Lanaki Apele and Shaun Kagawa, plus a horde of agile, fast posts, will thrive again with Oahu officiating.

A group of high-pressure defenders that includes long 6-1 to 6-3 athletes is a real threat to any team that struggles with turnovers. There are more than a few teams in this tournament that have fundamental problems even when there is barely any defensive pressure. Since defense is difficult to embrace from an empirical standpoint — teams don’t report steals and deflections and charging fouls taken — it’s understandable how committee members and fans will probably underestimate KS-Hawaii, a team I saw play twice.

Other than that, it’s basically a wash. Sooner or later, every team has to face a really tough, seasoned opponent, whether it’s in the quarterfinal or semifinal round. For some, it will be in the opening round on Wednesday, when questions will begin to be answered.

• History begat respect. The D-II bracket is never dull to examine. Two years ago, the notion of Pahoa being seeded second would have thrilled the Daggers and surprised most of the state. But a year after Pahoa’s rise to the state D-II championship, the Daggers are, indeed, No. 2 in the seedings for this year’s tourney.

What’s also interesting is Island Pacific, a program with very little history in the state tourney, getting the No. 3 seed. Is it warranted? An argument could be made there. IPA won the ILH, nudging past University, a team that gave lots of D-I foes problems in December tournaments.

The No. 4 seed, Kapaa, may be a sleeper, but I can see why the committee has the Warriors behind IPA. Without a stronger schedule, it’s not easy to justify the KIF champion higher than any of the top three seeds.

Of course, in the eight-team D-II tourney, seeding is less of a factor. No byes.

• Misdrawn, misfired? Farrington, to no surprise, got the No. 1 seed. The Governors are ranked No. 4 in the state and have a long list of D-I victims going back to the start of nonconference play. So why are they playing St. Joseph, a team that regularly competes and beats D-I teams both on and off the Big Island?

It’s a tough call. A tight field (eight teams) means gauging St. Joe against other league runner-ups like University (tough when healthy), McKinley (beat Farrington once, nearly beat them again in the OIA playoffs) and MIL champion Seabury Hall. St. Joseph had its share of struggles, but has enough size and talent to emerge in the D-II final. The field is tough and I’d love to see every D-II game.

• No respect? Seabury Hall spent nearly the entire season at No. 10 in the Top 10. Largely untested, but tremendously talented, the Spartans rolled through the MIL behind Dylan King and Phelan Pagano. However, Pagano suffered a knee injury late in the season and the Spartans are not the same team. Should they have merited a higher seed based on performance — 16-4 overall, 8-0 MIL — or potential?

It appears difficult to measure unless (or until) they meet fourth-seeded Kapaa or fifth-seeded University at some point. From the bracket, it appears Seabury Hall is the sixth seed; Thursday’s opponent is No. 3 Island Pacific. They can prove the committee wrong in full, public viewing.

Great points by all and all points are debatable. The thing that Kona had was a deeper bench, something most ILH teams boast in every sport. Kona also has starters besides Awa and Galdeira and bench players that could actually start on most ILH and OIA teams.

Coach Mike kept his players focused and they came prepared but Kona had the better team. They won, no matter any point made and they still have a strong team coming back next season.

They lose Hanato-Smith, their pure shooter and they lose Wall, the one player with an exceptional high post game. They return the rest and probably get Liftee back from paddling.

I just want to say that Punahou was powerful this year and every year that they participate. Konawaena was strong these past years too. Punahou: the girls had individual strengths but missing something to win this tournament--missing communication--team effort. I love their Punahou's coach-- he dresses professionally and he is serious through the game for his girls and fans. Coach Awa is a nice person but there is something that she lacks--- can someone pinpoint this or I might be mistaken. The girls won this game-- Lea really put it out there-she is the state's best next to Puhahou's player. The defense-- w/o out the defense Lea does not stand a chance against five other girls that play like her. Anuhea Wall was the key to this win--- I hope they see that.. Missy and Thea-- great defense w/o their fast moves and great defense--punahou would of crushed Konawaena-- Awa did a great job too-- but again it takes a team to win.

Uhfan, the best line in your little diatribe was, "You base your opinions on urban myths and stereotypes." Great line and so true.

I thought the "turning point" in last nights game was the possession where Sakarata was forearmed out of the way under the basket (no call) and Kona went up by two. Then, she took the ball upcourt, two Kona players took a flop and Sakarata got called for the personal foul-- it looked like the same level of physicality to me; either you "let them play" or you don't. I don't like any game where the turning point is a whistle. That was a "big" call with a minute and a half to play, and I think the commentator said something similar. After that, it was fouls and free throws.

As for the public-private school debate. It's moot. Both teams represented their institutions proudly with great effort and sportsmanship.

Screen you are being absolutely ridiculous. First of all Coach Awa has had access to these kids since they were at the elementary levels. I can understand about Punahou's resources, but we are talking about girls basketball, not football.

Since Punahou got a New AD in 2009 there hasn't been much focus on the girls basketball program. Look and you will see the athletes being brought into the school through their "Bridge" program are the football players and boys basketball players.

So your point about all the resources and how they attract all these players are moot. Quick...name 1 player on the girls team that was recruited? If you cannot, then all your point above about all Punahou's resources mean nothing since it hasn't brought in a single player on the varsity team.

As for multiple courts, Punahou has to share 1 full size court, and one minimized court among 13 teams. Let me say that again, 13 teams. Now you can add the outside court. But I don't see how advantageous an outside court where all the rims are not exactly 10 feet and the courts are all short.

Punahou "barely" uses it alumni to recruit girls basketball players. Let's look at the starters. All of Wong's sibling went to Punahou and I think she was there since elementary days. Sataraka is primarily a softball player. Maeda transferred from Iolani and that was her parent's decision, not a Punahou recruting decision. Ching most role players who don't play much was there from 7th grade or elementary days.

So let me ask you this again, who are these big recruits?

You don't know if Coach Taylor would be successful is given Kona's hand? Are you serious? With Awa, Galdeira, and Wall on the team, even you Screen could win a title.

You think Punahou should make it every year? Really? Have you seen their personnel? You base your opinions on urban myths and stereotypes. Do you actually look at what is really going on?

Punahou's heated pool, raquetball courts, etc. So you are saying that facilities that the girls team never use is an advantage? That is just plain absurd.

Now you want to bring up academics? Punahou kids have to practice to 6 or 7pm, then the average Punahou student takes 2.3 AP classes. That means a lot of studying. You cannot tell me that Kona's academic program is as rigorous or intense.

Coach Awa is okay. But she only makes it to the finals when she has the best player or players in the state. What happened in 2008? Or 2006? Or 2010? In 2006 & 2008 when she didn't have the best player, she didn't even make it to the finals. And Punahou blew them out of the gym in 2006. I can't recall Kona ever blowing out Punahou, even when Punahou was rebuilding.

And as for Awa being the best coach, well we all saw OC-16's coverage of the Kona-Lahaina game last year and we all saw the game management and play call out of the last TO to win the game. I don't want to say anything negative so I will just leave it at that.

I am not saying that Kona isn't good. I think Coach Awa is really good at developing the players from little kid times until they get to high school. But I don't think game planning and management is her strength. I think they excel because they have a stacked deck with the most talent.

If you think Punahou has more talent than Kona, then I really do not know what to say.
