I have a question that maybe someone can help answer. Is there any truth to the rumor that Coach Gier is not coaching Maryknoll this year. I thought that I saw him sitting behind the team at the scrimmage on Saturday. It looked like it was one of his assistants from last year coaching the team. If any of you could answer this that would be great. I know, you are going to say I should know this since I follow the team but I don't.

1. Pun- Talent all around. Will definitely win if Steinhoff is 100%
2. Iolani- Nobriga is gone, but don't underestimate the Doc. They always have top shooters and they will bomb.
3. St. Louis- Cole Shidaki and Micah McClinton will lead this squad with great size but questionable guard play.
4. Kamehameha- Very well balanced team with good size.
5. Mid-Pac- Could upset a lot of teams and make their own push for states. Marcus Holyfield is one of the top ILH players.
6. Maryknoll- They can upset people, but I don't think they'll do enough to gain a berth.
7. Damien- As always.

I did make my picks according to what each respective team has. It just so happens that the "usual suspects" -Punahou, Iolani, St.Louis, Kamehameha- have a better stock of athletes and basketball players.

Two players, no matter how good they are, will not carry one team through the season let alone into the state tourney. The better teams will exploit that. The ILH coaches will take advantage of this. Mid Pac will be in some tight games and Holyfield and Takenaka will have to go to the bench at some stages in the game. This is where they will struggle.

As for Herring, just for you I will change my stance, but only just a little. Herring CAN BE 2nd team ILH.

Wow. For a minute I thought that BasketballJones knew what he or she was talking about but to say that Herring is honorable mention at best is very idiotic. You menion that you vote for the top 10 so I am assuming that you watch a lot of basketball and it looks like you have watched some summer games. Maybe you didnt see any of the Maryknoll summer games so if that is the case then you get a pass on that one. But he will be first team all ILH for sure. The kid can do it all and that is why he will be up for player of the year.

i do agree that the champ will have some losses though. But I cant just sit and pick the same teams to win it because of the school name. Punahou has nobody on their team that has proven they can step up and take the places of Miah and Spencer and they are really missing Coach Tacon. THere is no way that he would have lost the state championship game last year. So if they don't have good leadership, they won't have a good team. Make your picks on what they have and not what the jersey says, because this isn't the past and these are not the players from the past.

What i meant is that the rest of the starting 5 are good role players and they know their roles, but the team will only go as far as Holyfield and Takenaka carry them. The other guys cant carry this team but they can compete with anybody. I know that it sounds funny but all I am saying is dont look for the rest of the starters to put up 15-20 points like those two. Once the bench comes in the team drops way off, so the starters will be playing most of the game.

Hi Bballfan69...I just re-read your post and it left wondering about your statement regarding Mid Pac.

In your first sentence you say that "their starting 5 is as good as anybody in the league." And then in your very next sentence you say "Holyfield and Takenaka will carry them but not really much help after these two."

A little contradicting to say the least.

Hawaii Hoops...thanks for providing a great website where hoop junkies like myself can hang out.

I have been a voter in the Star Bulletin Boys Top 10 rankings the past 5 years. Here is how I would rank this year's ILH teams:

1.Punahou. Punahou is big and athletic enough to make a serious run at the title, with or without Steinhoff. They have good size with Trevor Crabb (6'5) and Kimo Makaula (6'3) not to mention the possibility of Steinhoff(6'3) being available later.

2. St.Louis. The Crusaders will match up size-wise very well to the Puns, but they will be noticably stronger in the paint. Also, Cole Shidaki will be a highly regarded prospect for Player of the Year. One of their biggest setback is a tough early schedule coupled with a possible trip to the state football championship game that will keep several key players from basketball for quite a while, including Coach Tengan.

3. Iolani. Its always tough losing a verstatile big man like Liloa Nobriga, but the Raiders should be at the state tourney again. Taylor Mounts will be the key to this very young team. Biggest advantages are their unmatched coaching staff, arguably the best in the state. Also, the overall basketball I.Q. on that team is probably second to none in the ILH.

4. Kamehameha. Will battle Iolani for the final spot. They actually have more athletes on the team than Iolani but after watching this team in the past, including this summer, it seems there is too much individualism on the team. Not enough shots for everyone. Regardless, they are state tourney potential if they are able to put it together. They have the potential to steal a game from either of the top two teams mentioned.

5. Mid Pac. Extremely talented Marcus Holyfield will be a serious contender for ILH Player of the Year. This kid runs like a gazelle. Devon Takenaka is strong and can run the floor better than any big man in the ILH. Sammy Won is a more than capable ball handler and will prove his worth this season. After these 3, there is not much to this year's squad. Holyfield will account for 75% of the teams scoring. They need him to stay healthy.

6. Maryknoll. The Spartans will be battling this year and will be involved in some close games. But I just don't see them winning more than 2 games in the regular season. Herring will be the best player on this team of unknowns but I believe he is an honorable mention type player at best.

7. Damien. If some key football players come out for basketball then they may split a game with Maryknoll. If the football players don't come out then expect another goose egg for the Monarchs this year. Bones Tuitele is a gamer but basically different year, same story. Nikko Romuar is super quick, too quick for the ball it seems as turnovers will be prevalent against the better teams in the ILH. Nevetheless, always expect a physical game when you play Damien.

Summary-This will be the most balanced ILH in recent memory. Don't expect the league champ to come out undefeated, and may actually sport up to 3 losses. Its really tough to choose a preseason player of the year as no one really stands out. With that said, look for the player of the year to come from the champion.

My picks for the ILH season are as follows:

1. Kam- They have good size across the board and have plenty of talent with it.
2. st. Louis - Size matters and they have more than anybody in the state. Just got to hope that teams dont try and run them off the floor.

3. Maryknoll- I know this is a shock but I just think they might surprise everybody this year. Good mixture of everything but unproven players will be the thing they have to overcome. If thee guys can step up then they might be back at state.
4. Pun.- Can't put them in the top 3 without Steinhoff. Also they have no go to guy after losing Miah and Spencer. Hilliard is not that good of a shooter for someone who likes to shoot as much as he does.
5. Mid-Pac - Starting 5 is as good as anybody in the league. Holyfield and Takenaka will carry them but not really much help after them 2. Bench is very weak.
6. Iolani- What? Iolani not at state. I know, but I think that the loss of Nobriga is too much for this team to overcome. Can you say REBUILDING
7 Damien- Not really any talent on this team. They will play hard though, just not hard enough to make up for what they dont have.

The ILH is expected to be a tightly contested race this season with as many as five teams contending for the title and one of the league’s three berths (actually more like 2.5) to the 2008 Hawaii Basketball State Tournament.
