Bulla Viena. From what I saw tonight against Iolani, he will be a force to be reckon with in the ILH. Although he is only 5'9'' (I'm not sure how tall he is), he had a ton of offensive rebounds and just found ways to put the ball in the bucket. I also like Arakawa from Iolani. He isn't the flashiest player, but he knows his role and seems to always get the job done. Tonight, he probably had double digit points and drew a couple charges.

That's the problem for MPI, Maryknoll and Damien. No mater how good you are, you still have to beat Iolani, Punahou, St Louis or Kamehameha for that 1st or 2nd spots. The math is simple, you have to split with 3 of them, sweep one of them, then take care of business with the lower two. That would give you a 9-3 league record with a tie breaker vs one of the four. That would give you at least a tie for 2nd and a playoff game. Unles two of them sweep two out of three series then you stuck in third. That will be so hard to do, not imposible but pretty close.
The only good thing is that the ILH takes the #1 and #2 out of the league Tournament. That means you only have to beat one (If you finish 3rd or 4th) or two if you finish 5 or lower. Then that only gets you a trip to the big isle to play the BIF #3. As much as I root for lower half of the ILH to suceed, it would be a monumental task in doing so.
Over the past 10 years the only teams to take that 3rd ILH slot have been Punahou, Kamehameha or St Louis. Iolani has never finished lower than 2nd. Could this be the year? That's why they play the games.

It would be good if they make the tourney. at least more people would get to see marcus play. what school will they displace if they do make states? The ilh only has 2.5 automatic births.

Hehe...too funny.

I thought I was the only one who saw this at Mid Pac games but not so. I have seen this since Holyfield played intermediate ball. I don't like this just as much as players who look into their stands at their parents for "instructions". I had a player once who used to do that all the time and finally, during the game, I told him to go up and sit with this dad. He declined to do so and that was the end of it.

Dakineboo is correct thay they have a very good starting 5, but that's where it ends. The drop off is huge at the bench. Mid Pac does have the capability to steal a game from one of the bigger schools, but it would have to be a close to perfect game played by Mid Pac. Because they are very limited as far as talent goes, their margin of error is very small compared to a school like Iolani and Punahou that can go very deep talent-wise.

Along with Basketball Jones, I notice that you always seem to provide good and keen insight. It is like you have your finger on the pulse of Hawaii Basketball. It is also refreshing that you and Jones seem to be unbiased with your comments. Unlike some other bloggers to this site!

You hit it on the nose Fanatic. This is the ILH, not Club Basketball. I bet Mid-Pacs Head Coach must have to deal with alot. This club coach should sit way at the top of the bleachers instead of within the first 5 rows. He probably undermines what the head coach says. Too bad!!!!

dakineboo,

I would say that this is a pretty accurate assesment on your part. What I would like to see is for the team captains to stop going over to their club coach at half-time to be consulted. This is not club season! They need to be listening to their Mid-Pac coach! know matter how successful they are on the club level, this is not club ball, this is the ILH! Wouldn't you agree?

Man let me tell you this ILH basketball fans...the Mid-Pacific Owls are going to be a cinderella pick to make the state tournament this season...Yeah I know what all of you are thinking...what is this guy talking about...but if you look at the overall picture of the ILH...its wide open and you never know what could happen especially in terms of your share of upsets...Mid Pac although not large in size...has a particulary good starting five...Marcus Holyfield who is probably one of the better basketball talents on the island...Sampson Won who has proven to be shaky at times is lighting up the scoreboard this season with steady play at the point position...and Devan Takenaka...a wild but yet athletic 3 man that can penetrate and get down and dirty on defense...I'm not saying that Mid-Pac is automatically going to make the states...I'm just saying a lot of people underestimate them...but watch out...they're going to impress a lot of people this year...and maybe...just maybe knock off one of the big dogs...if they play the right way...
