Akina new BYUH women's coach

    BYU-Hawaii has announced Hiram Akina as the Seasiders women's basketball coach. He takes over for Wendy Anae, who coached the first four years of the young program.

    Akina is a 1983 BYUH grad and former basketball standout. The past two years, he coached the Kahuku High boys to a 46-13 record. He has been a coach for 26 years, including jobs in Hawaii, Arizona and Las Vegas.

    Good luck to Hiram, a truly nice guy.

    Great news! I remember watching him play against UH Vulcans. He was a little shorter the Rene Sanchez but built like a tank! His older brother Alex was even better, but did not play college hoops. I believe they starred at Leilehua High(I think). Congrats to coach Hiram.
