Why isn't there a second team for the West? Are there less players or teams? This seems odd.

@Hoop, yeah they have one less team on the west so they only get a first team....

my personal opinions- No way Ekau should have been co-poy...Mattos and Handy both had better regular seasons and seemed more deserving imo....I think the voting should be done at the end of the BIIF tourney....that way states won't influence peoples votes....With that said Ekau had an excellent season....just don't think his teams record or his play was as good as Handy or Mattos...

Also i think Carvalho got screwed....If anything he should have been 2nd team instead of Apele...Not that Apele isn't an excellent player, but i feel Carvalho had a much better year....

Even though there is ONLY 1 less team, I can't see the rationale on having only 1 All-West Team.

From the basic fan's view, it makes the West seem less important than the East.

Jayce Carvalho not even second team? Cmon Man! He got screwed. Makana Cazimero second team? Scotty Wong should at least be second team!

As for the West, how is that Utrera boy first team? Lorenzo first team? He isnt as good as i thought. I was expecting him to dominate i the west.

I was assuming that the WHT forgot to print the second team for the West...but then I looked at the entire list and I can't see any players missing. Odd that there wouldn't be a second team.

Bibby...you are right, I was really shocked to see Ekau as Co-POY. The irony of it all is that Dakota Allen didn't even make honorable mention after being a first teamer last year. Him not making HM means his coach didn't even submit his name for the ballots.

    Wow....interesting...very interesting.
Bill O'Rear was right, by saying that there were a few surprises on the 2nd team and honorable mentioned.

Scoty Wong - Not even 2nd team...dang, not even honorable mention???

These guys all made honorable mention before Scotty Wong, Randen Barinobis and Dakota Allen; (below)

    Dustin Leong (Hilo)
    John Byrd (Pahoa)
Bryant Malepe (Ka'u) ***Who???? Are you kidding me!!!????*** Sorry, i'm jus saying. Even my wife commented that he shouldn't be on the list...and he's family to her. (before dakota/wong/Barinobis???)...ah' common!

Infact there's 3... maybe 4 guys on the 2nd team before the likes of Wong, Scanlen-leite and Carvalho...lol...its so crazy, its' funny..lol...

    Thats weird..."8" guards...."8" (Ocho!!!!)...3 fowards and 1 Center.
Coaches love there guards...I guess? lol

However, I personally think "Will Scanlen-Leite" belongs on the 2nd team before 3 other "guards" that were listed...infact, I'd pick "Scanlen-Leite" over his own teammate Sebastian Ohara-Saft. "Will" made that machine turn!!!!!

I'm sorry but, even though he transferred 2x (Dakota Allen)... still should be somewhere in the honorable or even 2nd team, before a few other players listed on the 2nd team...that's crazy and maybe a bit personal!
Can you imagine a league with "no bigs"....I think some players were "not-appreciated"

Hey, but what do I know?

    Here's the straight scoop:

West Hawaii Today published the All-BIIF boys basketball teams today and somehow left off Hilo's Dakota Allen's name from the second team.

The way the league releases the teams is by how the coaches' voting goes, with players listed in the exact order by the votes they received. Due to ties, the teams have more than five players.

Here is the exact order of the team by votes:

    East First Team
    Jacob Andrade, St. Joseph
    Isaiah Ekau, Pahoa
    Richard Handy, Keaau
    Matt Libao, Waiakea
    Chris Mattos, Waiakea
    Mitchel Shintani, Hilo

    East Second Team
    Dakota Allen, Hilo
    Lanaki Apele, Kamehameha
    Makana Cazimero, Keaau
    Thomas Fairman, St. Joseph
    Haku Ishibashi, Keaau
    Kainoa Kawaha, Hilo
    Sebastian Ohara-Saft, St. Joseph

Andrade and Ekau tied in voting for East POY.
    Harry Scanlan-Leite was COY.

    West First Team
    Brandon Bautista, Kohala
    Rokas Cesnulevicous, HPA
    Kamu Lorenzo, Honokaa
    Thomas Naehu, Kealakehe
    Sasha Obradovich, HPA
    Deion Utrera, Kealakehe

Brandon Bautista was the West POY.
    Don Fernandez, Kohala, COY.

It's true that the West only picked a first team due to having one less team than the East. This was the same format used in picking the All-BIIF volleyball teams, based on the coaches voting.

    Thanks Hi-Low!

    I'm glad Dakota at-least made 2nd team.

...tell me did they forget Scotty Wong too???...not even honorable mention?

One coach mentioned to me that the league should forget the East/West teams and make just one All-BIIF team comprising the whole league. That way, less players would be honored but the coach felt it would be more prestigious.

So, maybe an All-BIIF first team, with no more than six players; and a second team, no more than six players; plus some honorable mentions.

It's a good suggestion. Not sure how the other BIIF coaches would feel, but it might mean more to the players in the long run.

Any thoughts? And who would you pick this year if that was the case?

Luna86 -- It's all on the coaches, who they voted for. For some reason, Scotty Wong didn't get votes, although a lot of fans liked how he played and there's no doubt he'll be one of the top players on the island as a senior.

Maybe instead of the coaches filling out the ballot and sending it in, there should be a coaches meeting and hash everything out. That way every coach would have a say in front of the other coaches and some of the little problems that always crop up might be resolved.

But no matter what, there will be people who agree and disagree and there will be some form of politics.

All those players on the all BIIF teams are all good players but whoever voted for these players/teams needs to have there heads examined! Either they don't like certain coaches/players or they just don't know basketball! Scotty not making anything HELLO! Undefeated Kohala with only one pick on the all BIIF first team and H.P.A. has two. What's up with that! Take nothing away from the H.P.A. boy's they were good but they lost twice to Kohala, Honoka'a & Kealakehe! And by the way for those of you that don't know me my son is Tyler Meyer and I felt that his honorable mention pick was good enough for him. He had a sub par year and could have done better but that's how it goes. Mahalo also to the Boy's Club of Hilo for the All-Star Game it was awesome!

Shayne -- Tyler had a good season and was one of the most improved players in the BIIF and one of the league's better shooters, especially from 3 range. Of course, he didn't play much last year, but you could see his confidence grow all year and by the end, he was the team's most consistent player.

Tyler also has a great attitude and a good upside. If he decides to try to play in college, he might get a chance to blossom at the JC level or at a D-III school. He loves the game and has a chance to move on if that's his goal.

    Good luck, Tyler.

Bill O'Rear, please do it like you did in the past, you can see animosity of coaches just by selections. Also I do disagree with this 6-7 players on first and second team. 1st team should have 5 players and 2nd team should have 5 players..... PERIOD

Scotty did not make it, I assume because he was not a starter. Only starters are only submitted for voting if they still have the same voting proceedures.

@ Shayne"SWISH"Meyer: I hear you on the 1 selection from Kohala. HPA has it's exchange RECRUITS chosen over some formidable others and I question that. Props to you and your honesty about your son.

Having 2 teams from the EAST and 1 from the WEST doesn't seem right. But I'm neither a coach with a ballot or A.D.
The idea of have ONE BIIF all star team sounds great. Or 1 team for each division would serve us better.

There's a lot to talk about. We can second guess like many of our friendly BIIF refs.(pun intended). But the players have been selected. Nothing more, Nothing less.

@OldG, the only problem with having one team for both sides is that people from opposite sides only have box scores and playoffs to judge from...One example would be Richie Handy...If you just went off his box scores you probably wouldn't vote for him...but all of us who have seen him play this season know that he definitely was a top player this year....

One other question, but i swear they used to go by position in the past...Am I mistaken?? Just wondering..

Bibby, are gonna start your blogging tirade?
If each division east\west d-1 <> east\west d-2 had their own teams I would see that as a better way to honor the players(coaches too).
One argument is Sebi being chosen over Carvalho, Wong or even Allen. I may get into trouble for this one: Paul Lee should have been the COY. Don't get me wrong Coach Harry is VERY deserving and I am happy that he got his due. But Paul got shafted again! People don't like his style or his brashness but he got result to team play.
    T- together
    E- everyone
    A- Achieves
    M- more

Remember Bibs before you take me to the electric chair I am from Waiakea High and I believe that Mark Saito had everything to do with Pahoa's success. I said it!

The only way you can have just 1 all league team is if they all get to play each other in the regular season,if not then you have to go with picking 2 all star team per conference. Just remember guys POY and MVP is different...... Andrade was indeed the POY of the east. Handy or Mattos was more of a MVP Candidate kind of player to there respective teams

OldG- well if you gonna get in trouble for picking paul lee as your COY then ill jump in the fire with you on that...... I do agree with you on him getting shafted AGAIN.

@OldG, lol...I'm not that bad am I? lol...The only time i started going off was when St. Joe's got screwed in the rankings and when people were saying Andrade shouldn't be POY...and the Andrade stuff i over did purposely to make sure my point got across...lol...

Now on the COY stuff...If it were D1 and D2 separate then i could see Lee winning by a landslide but since they are combined it's really hard to argue for him against Coach Harry...now i know people who know me are going to say I'm biased as hell but really look at the roster depth, athleticism and overall talent each coach had and it's pretty easy to see Coach Scanlan-Leite got more out of his team than Coach Lee...Now with that said I think Coach Lee got the second most out of what he had and it was really close...St. Joe's starting 5 was probably better but after that Waiakea has the huge advantage imo...And the main reason i would have a really hard time voting for Coach Lee this season is that they got blown out in the BIIF finals...I know you shouldn't weigh one game that much but they got completely demolished and it was mostly due to the gameplanning...They came out playing man against Hilo...I mean seriously, who plays man on Hilo?? lol...

And I'm not sure if you are being serious or not but Mark Saito is probably one or two strikes from getting fired...lol...I also have other info but I'm not even sure if i should put it out so i won't....But it's pretty bad stuff...

But one thing is sure, St. Joe's coaching staff heard about his little ripping up a St. Joe's shirt at their pep rally when they came back from states...Let me just say Coach Harry was not too happy when he heard that..You guys might witness the worst blowouts ever next year when St. Joe's plays Pahoa..lol...

How was Ekau all year? From reading a lot of your posts, he didn't have that great of a year. He had a hell of a tourney, and from coaching against both him and Andrade I would say that he was by far and away the better player. Not taking anything away from Andrade bc he was a good player too. But at the state tourney, Ekau was a beast. Maybe he just stepped it up more there, or was it because we didn't really know him and he surprised us more? What do you all think of that? I put both of them on my all-state ballot. But I didn't get to see them both play all year.

I know what took place at the Pahoa pep rally. Too bad Rosey had to turn off his camera....(if he did)

Bibby, Punahou played man against Hilo and they could have won by 40 if they kept the dogs in. We played man against them going much deeper into our bench than normal and did okay.

Ekau had a really good year but not on par with Andrade...Andrade was, imo, far and away the top player this year....He averaged something like 26ppg, 5 assists, 6 rebs and like 5 steals or something crazy like that....Andrade also had a 44 point game and dropped 37 against Pahoa....Ekau probably only has Andrade beat in rebs and blocks...In all honesty Fairman out played Ekau every time they played each other...
