Harry (St. Joe)
....Where is Nelson Wong???
Hoops Dreams coaches!!!!!!
1. Harry - St. Joseph (Excellent)
2. Meyer - Honokaa (need more respect from players)
3. Awa - Konawaena (too bad lack of talent)
4. Kamu/Mandaquit - Hilo (have alot of talent doing
well, shows when they play)
Notice I put Kamu/Mandaquit I think you all know
why I did that. But to say the least they are
doing a good job. Well for me if Nelson Wong was
coaching he probably would be 2nd on my list.
Shaka6, I do agree with you about Harry being an excellent coach, and you have a good list of coaches.
My question to everyone is, "do coaches at the high school level get to much credit for their teams success". I believe basketball is a very simple game, and if you are able to get a very talented group of kids with basketball skills to work together, you will be successful. Now on the hand I havn't seen much coaches out there come into the BIIF with kids that are not talented with limited basketball skills do well.
Harry's team has talent, but I think the difference with Harry and his dedicated assistants, is that they spend a lot of time even on the off season working on specific basketball skills, weight training, speed and agility, and so forth. While many of the other schools don't do this. Instead, they just play in tournments in the off season, which does help with your game a little, but it doesn't help with the little things that will give you an advantage over your opponent.
Good points Brew!!!
St Joe pretty much plays "year round", due to the plain fact that they don't have any other sport to participate in, so they zero-in on there skills with basketball.
In addition, most of them, if not "all" - only play basketball, so its pretty obvious regarding why they are in mid-season form right now!
True - Talent does make a coach look good/smart. If you don't have talent or little of it, the coach becomes scrutinized and downgraded for obvious reasons
St. Joe - "one sport" (to stay focused on)
Hilo, Kea'au, Waiakea, Kam - multi-sport "athletes"
True Dat BIGFAN!!!!
@BIGFAN...
When it comes down to it, it really is just dedication and hard work. Majority of those kids on the St. Joes team only play basketball, and don't play any other sports in general, and never really have. For some kids, they like to focus on just one sport...and that's not necessarily an advantage, more of a personal decision to benefit them.
Also those kids work hard. I guarantee you half of those kids at St. Joes wouldn't even be playing anywhere else right now if they didn't develop their skills like they have with Coach Harry, and Coach Bruce at St. Joes. They understood what they needed to do to get better physically, and skill-wise, and they worked on it. It obviously shows on the court.
Also....let's talk about Kamehameha. Majority of those kids have been playing in the same system, running the same offensive and defensive sets since they have been 10 years old! Some of them even younger than that...So I think them being in a system for about 6+ years is a little more beneficial than a couple of summers of hard work if you ask me...just my opinion.
It's great to see alot of justifiable opinions on this subject!
There is always 2 sides to a story..in this case opinions can be 3,4,5 and maybe more.
Great input
I tell you that Waiakea's Coach is brutal. Why did his two top players leave his program??
All the coaches on the east side is new coaches. They are all in there second year(Hilo, Waiakea, Keaau,Kam).
St Joe has a commited program and it shows early.
Top coach in my opinion in the BIIF is St Joe
@BIIFFan
Well, they didn't really leave because of his "brutality," (even though it has become known of how he runs his practices), more so of how he approaches the game and his style of coaching wasn't what shintani wanted. for allen however, i believed he left more so because his father believed it would be easier somehow for him to get player of the year at hilo high....
I heard the same thing about 1 month ago (through the grapevine) regarding D.Allen transferring to Hilo for a better chance at making "player of the year".
Wow, this is the 3rd confirmation...so it must be true.
Personally, I think its a tad bit selfish on Dads part (if its true). What is it going to look like on his transcripts (IF he goes to college)...3 high schools in 4 years? Sounds like priorities are a tad bit off...oh, I forgot, academics must "not" be that important I guess?
*** How's about we throw in a red shirt option for high school players ...maybe he'll get a shot at Kea'au or St. Joe Next year? Can I get a Amen? (Jus kidding)
@Luna86
Bahaha, good one....and yes i do agree, it seems like his dad has his priorities first instead of what his son wants, but thats just my opinion if you ask me...
@obiwanginobili
True that Shintani left because he was'nt getting his way at waiakea and being disciplined (look now his playing time is not much at hilo why because hilo has the guards to replace him).
For Allen your right dad does think that it would be easier for Dakota to get Player Of The Year at Hilo (but don't think it's going to happen).
Is Dad living "his" dream and dictating his sons?...looks like it.
I feel sorry for the boy, I think Dakota is a great kid and plays the game well. But, what is dad teaching him?
Thats too bad...there's more important things in life!
Like Loyalty, integrity and just plain old "common sense"
@Shaka6
yea i think paul's problem is that he is still in that player mode, instead of coach mode. he was a great player throughout his life, and when the kids he is coaching dont do it exactly how he wants, or thinks it should be done then he gets a little carried away with himself in his actions and words because he cant go out there, and hit that shot, or make that stop on defense...he is still very young to be coaching in my opinion. he needs to remember that there are very few players like himself that will come around again..that would help him a lot in his coaching technique.
Don't get me wrong Dakota is a great kid and one thing I have to admit that he has improved alot on his Basketball Skills sinced being coached by Kamu/Mandaquit more then I can say for when he was coached by Lee at waiakea.
Hey obiwanginobili,
That sounds like that Hilo coach as well...."player mode"
I've watched them practice a few times over the summer...and oooh boy...those players have "no respect" for him! Swearing at him, teasing him, mocking him...I felt bad for him at one point...but hey, I guess it comes with the territory "if you don't separate yourself as a player 2 a coach.
@Luna86
wow that is actually pretty sad, never knew that was going on...but yes you are correct, if you act like a player then you will get treated like one...from everybody.
same goes for the keaau coaches.
@ obiwanginobili,
Yeah, wearing "caps" as a head coach or as an assist. coach really doesn't look professional at all...sorry.
@Luna86
Hahaha, good point. Definitely agree with you.
BTW: do you know about any of the teams that st joes and waiakea are matched up against in the moanalua tourney? ill be down there to watch thats why and just wondering if you got any scoops on them. st joes plays mckinley, and waiakea plays christian academy?
trying to find some stuff out to see what i will be looking for when i see them match up with the 2 oahu teams.
@ obiwanginobili
True to what you said about Lee. His very young and did not gain enough experience.
One thing I cannot stand about him is that he is always talking about himself about when he was in high school/college but you know what get over yourself move on and he needs to remember it's not about himself.
@Luna86
That is true and how sad (but looks like they keep it off the court they don't show it which is good for their games).
But how can a coach take that kind of language from a player? Now that is really degrading yourself as a coach (if that is the case then god knows how the coaches talk to the players).
In allll honesty....I have a strong conviction that if Randy Apele was givin' a chance to coach at the High school level...ohhh boy, he motivate kids and kids do respond to him!!!! Not only knowledgeable, but "alot" of PASSION and kids like that!!!!
Jus my 2cents
Tru dat Luna86!!!! I think many coaches in the BIIF feel that yelling at the kid will motivate them, not true. As a coach I feel that yelling and demoralizing a player is the last thing you should do. I feel if you can give the player a chance even after making a mistake to continue to play, and right his wrong, a player will respond in a more positive manner. If every time your player makes a mistake you take him out and yell at him, he will now have that in the back of his mind and he will then become tentative in playing his game. Sometimes a player needs the opportunity to fight through some mistakes to become a more comfortable and confident player. Don't get me wrong I do raise my voice when correcting players, but I try and stay away from making that player feel degraded. I instead correct and then throw in some positive reinforcement, so the player feels better about himself and his efforts. A happy player usaually results in better performances.
Why doesn't Apele Coach at the High School level?
Apele would be better at the high school concession, he would make killa grinds.
