I'm new to the girls seen. My 14 year old girl and her friend want to join a club. They have intermediate level experience.

What happened to 808 b ball club ? or all the girls jump ship to Kalakaua and Sharks ? Can always go to Kona ...
Posted 2 years ago # -
I know 808 just restarted their clinic at Roosevelt on Sundays. I don't know about the jumping ship, but 808 still got solid girls. The Roosevelt post runs with the club team.

After what I saw take place in the Roosevelt gym this year I'm not sure I'd want my daughter around coach Bobby.

WestOahuDad. I know Coach Bobby as do many other coaches. He isn't a personal friend, but more of a colleague.
While he may get intense and often very excited, he is a good coach, a good man, and is good to his kids. If you notice, although he is quite aggressive towards his players on the court, his kids love him and are very loyal to him. They play hard for him. If they didn't respect him, they wouldn't work so hard.
Kids are the best judge of character, much more than all of us, coaches, parents, and spectators. If you want the most honest character reference, I would suggest you talk to parents of 808 Basketball or his former players.
I think that is much more powerful than using a blogsite to do a character check, where people's identities are anonymous.

HoopFanatic, I agree with most of what you've posted. The fact that identities are "anonymous" does not change any of what I saw from coach Bobby this season. I do believe though that I'm unbiased in the sense that I have I don't have a history with this particular coach. I don't know him off the court and I don't know what he professes to the kids in private moments, but I do know that actions speak louder than words. I do know that his style of coaching that you describe as "intense and very excited," can be a euphemism for "degrading and negative motivation."
I watched this year as several of his best players tuned him out during timeouts as he continued to berate them while the supposed head coach waited to get her two cents in, which never came in some instances.
I would want my daughter in a camp that taught a love and passion for the game in a positive environment-- a way of learning the game that was enjoyable. I would not send my daughter to a coach that berates players, has a constant scowl on his face, and uses negative tactics to motivate players.

Can you give specifics? All you are doing in generalizing. What is he specifically saying? What does he do that is degrading? All coaches yell. I have been coached by many "great" local coaches who drop f-bombs at us on occasion.
How do you know the kids tuned him out? Were you sitting in the huddle next to the players in question? Did they refuse to go back into the game? Did they talk back to him?
If the kids are not looking at the coach, then every coach gets tuned out by his/her players since emotions often run high and these are teenagers we are talking about.
Once again you use words such as "berate" and so forth. Yet, you mention no specific game, no specific words, and no specific actions.
No offense, but you are specifically calling someone's character into question, yet you do it behind an alias?
Do I agree with all of Coach Bob's public methods, probably not. But I elect not to judge someone on blips, but more for the body of work. I believe if someone is not there for the entire body of work, practices, study halls, team outings, games, etc., then things are often taken out of context.
I have seen football coaches of very successful program in Hawaii use much more intimidating methods, display more ego, use much more foul language, and are much more rigid. They use tough love, and unless we walk in that person's shoes, who are we to judge?

I have seen a few of Roosevelt's games this year. Yes Coach Bob does raise his voice, but I never hear anything that is demeaning to his players. I have never heard him say, "You suck! You are killing me! You have no business playing basketball! You are stupid!"
I just hear him yelling instructions, albeit, very loud and with a scowl sometimes.
Some kids need a soft passive voice. Others need a swift kick in the butt. Like I said before, ask his players what they think of him. I have never heard any of them say anything negative about him after they graduate.
And like I said before, his players are far more credible than any of us since they played for him. It isn't coincidental that they don't badmouth him.
And if you go to 808, you see many adults helping out when it used to be at Manoa. These are his peers and a few parents. If he was so foul, I find it ironic that parents of former players who can get nothing out of helping (more playing time, etc.) are they to support him.
He must be a magician if he is so foul and he can pull this off.

I am trying to stay out of this one but enough is enough already. I was at most of the games this year for the girls and never saw Bob act the way that he is being accused of on here. He is very passionate about the game and cares for all of those girls. He may get on them, but they know that he cares. Crap I would hate to see what you say about me at my games. I am all over my players. But I am on them because there are times that I expect more out of them. Sometimes you have to get on a kid to get more out of him/her. Sometimes it doesn't work, but a lot of time it does.
Bob is a great coach and a good guy. Like HF said, please be more specific about situations. And ask people that have played for him and that have gone to his camps. I have watched their practices and games and he has never "berated" a player. He may get on them, but what coach doesn't? Sad that people come on here behind a name and try and spread rumors about a great coach. I may be bias since I work with him, but I think most coaches would agree with me.

RC, I couldn't have said it better myself. You are like a poet on a computer, a scholarly athlete, or the intelligent hoodlum, haha. Do you remember him? A rapper from the later 80's, early 90's.

This thread in context was about clubs and clinics and coaches. I gave my "opinion" as each of us is free to do. My opinion was based upon personal observation-- not gossip. My opinion is that I would not send my daughter to a clinic run by this coach.
Not that any of this makes a difference, but I have no interest or bias toward or against Roosevelt. I was asked by a colleague and friend (who was interested in a player on their team) to stop by the game and check things out. When I work in that capacity I try to sit as close as I can to the bench (without drawing attention to myself) so that I can see how that player responds to her coaches' directions, how she supports her teammates, and if she is "coachable." You can see a lot in these moments if you take the time to look closely, listen, and pay attention. I wasn't there to evaluate the coaching staff, but instead to give a report about a player, which I did.
Hoop, this is the second time that you've asked me not to "judge" this coach from just a few observations. I've not been at this site long, but I have read your other comments and respect your opinion, so I'll honor your request and withhold further comment.

Howzit, I am just saying, if any coach has done something you feel unprofessional, can't you be specific. If you give a specific incident or two, it bring more credibility, don't you think?

Did you at least stop by and buy something from the snack bar to support the boys basketball program? haha
Posted 2 years ago # -
What kind of things u sell there? If they sell pasteles or roast pork then i am there.
Posted 2 years ago # -
No, our kitchen was pretty small and crappy. Only musubi, teri-burgers, hot-dogs, kalua pig and cabbage, chili. Our first year running it so we had to see what everyone likes and then maybe kick it up some more next year. Plus nobody wanted to help so I ran it during the JV game and then our wives would run it during the vars game. Tough to get good help. (I hope my wife never comes on here. lol)

I did stop by but the line was too long and you don't sell beer (just kidding).
I'm done now with the "specifics" thing-- posted in other threads, including the one that was deleted because the moderator thought, well, I don't know what they thought. It wasn't that bad-- no swearing and lots of specifics, but I guess I hit too hard with someone. We've been around on this a few times now. I think I'm done with it.
Too bad this forum doesn't have a Personal Message option. I'd be happy to tell you what I do.

You do know that Roosevelt Coach is the Intelligent Hoodlum. I wanted to be a Ninja, but wasn't agile enough and the black outfit didn't fit.

Gangsta Greetings
Being a gangsta does not just require a look. As gangsta is also a lifestyle, there is a certain lingo associated with being one. More or less, the origin of most of these words can be derived from common slang, contractions of most everyday words, or a manner of speaking that comes from inner city African-Americans or other minorities. Nonetheless, whatever their origin is, these words form the foundation of gangsta lingo – a language that emphasizes solidarity and loyalty to one’s peers.
Gangsta Dictionary
Here are some words from gangsta lingo and their corresponding meanings:
* T’sup? – It is a contracted version of the phrase, “what’s up”. It is commonly used as a greeting for fellow gangstas. It is also used to ask about someone’s condition. (ex. Hey shawty, t’sup? Heard yo’ doing some whack.)
* Harsh – From the word “harsh”, this could be used to describe something that’s out of the ordinary, remarkable or different. (ex. Ya don’t got some cash? Harsh!)
* Amigos – While this comes from the Spanish word meaning “friend”, amigos are more commonly used by Latino gangstas, though many others use it as well. (ex. Shawty, here’s mah amigos from tha otha block.)
* Hommies – From the word “home”, hommies imply friends, or people you are comfortable with. That means you can actually hang out with your hommies, as your relationship with them is “tight”. (ex. T’sup hommies? Wanna hang out in mah place tonight, crash and have som beer?)
* Dawg – From the word “dog”, it also evolved into a word indicating a friend. This became popular from Randy Jackson in American Idol, who commonly punctuates his sentences with the word. (ex. Tha was hot, dawg!)
* Dunkno – From the phrase, “don’t know”, you indicate your ignorance about a certain thing. (ex. Wha’, yo askin’ me if yo’ momma’s askin’ bout you? Dunkno!)
* Beaking – Just like what a bird does, beaking indicates acting like a bird, similar to cackling, in order to indicate approval. (ex. Yo’ beaking to me? Aaaaw!)
* Styll – From the word “style”, styll indicates your attire, your get-up. (ex. Whoa! That’s some styll there!”)
* Da hood – From the word, “the neighborhood”, da hood refers to your area or the place where you are from. (ex. Where did he say he came from? Aw, he just came from da hood!)
* Whack – This word describes something good, great or unexpected. (ex. Wha’, you gonna have a job? That’s whack!)
* Bling bling – The word “bling bling” normally refers to jewelry worm by gangstas. In order for a certain piece of jewelry to become a bling bling, it should be big, chunky, shiny and ostentatious. (ex. Ya got some bling bling there, shawty! That’s whack!)
* Diss – The word “diss” refers to saying something not so good about another person, as in you are making fun or ridiculing someone. (ex. Don’t diss him, he’s a dawg from da hood!)
* Holla back – From the word “holler back”, this means to answer back or to reply. (ex. You holla back to me later tonight.)
* Peep this – From the word “peep”, meaning to look, “peep this” means to check out, or to look at something. (ex. Look at this show shawty. Peep this now!)
* My bad – “My bad” means an admission of fault, and an apology. (ex. Was my fault, shawty. My bad.)We hope that these words give you an introduction to gangsta lingo. Remember, being a gangsta does not just require the look, it needs the talk!
