Post moves are a bit over shadowed by a lot of traveling calls now days.
In addition,
Quick/footwork in the post can be something of a dangerous option, especially with the abundance of "traveling calls" nowadays! Your limited to "one" move / straight to the basket or straight up.
IE: Up and under, drop step to the middle of the paint as well as the quick Jab step.Post playa's...hmmmm..None!...the only guy comes to mind is Hakeem Olajuan (sp.)...sweet moves! But would be traveling in the BIIF for sure.
but what do i know?

Thread was brought up last week in regards to the OIA. Here is a link to it:

Deforrest Buckner. He can finish at the rim. He can play with his back to the basket. He can face up and shoot midrange shots off glass. Very impressive.

Are we Talkin offense or Defense because as of late The Kaiser Center has played to terrific defensive performances against Kaimuki and Farrington. Big Physical man Defense and a Active Zone defensive player. Offense he does enough to help the team. I kno buckner is a beast but this guy play pretty great D

Mark Vaught and Kaeo Ahsau

handsdown, desmond tautofi. haha, bummers

At the Moment, Hands Down, Punahou's Deforrest Buckner!
Of Course being on a "Good Team" Helps.
Which is why Everyone on Punahou's Team "Looks Good" to Me!

@justadad
come on now.. thats farrington and kaimuki.. that doesn't prove anything at all!!!
but in my opinion i'd have to go with either swanson from MPI or buckner from PUNAHOUPosted 2 years ago # -
@ balla4life: It might not but it was a good showing, nothing against buckner he is an animal. i guess it wasnt meant to say he is the best but a good defender. and Lancelot Williams is considered a top post player and he bottled him up pretty well, just saying.

@JustaDad
Williams is a good post player. But I don't think he's a top post player. One of the better big men in the OIA, IMHO. I think I was the only one to mention him in the other thread. And I don't count much here. :P
He does only go right; shading him helps. Not to take away anything from Hill. He has great size and adequate agility. I just don't think you can include him in the discussion when the stakes are raised to incorporate the ILH.
I'd have to agree with the board on Buckner. I've only had the opportunity to watch him for maybe 5 1/2 quarters of time, but his game seems to be quite solid. Able to elevate around the basket, comfortable extending out to the FT. Athletic, runs the floor well, tall, long, explosive, and is a huge factor on D. Just simply the most well-rounded post player in the state, again IMHO.

...Big Island fans, how about current post players in the BIIF... remember, gotta look at post knowledge, not just being tall and big... you know the kid who knows how to use his body; know when to pin; when to pass off; know where to anticipate the rebound; the kind you almost always gotta double team down low..
..i think this is where the big island underclassmen gotta take a back seat to the juniors/senior class cause these post players, for being relatively small (basketball standards)--they gett'um..
..for the eastside, i love watching mattos/morante (waiakea)--they soo smooth down low and at the top of the key; i also enjoy carvalho--leader on the court who plays with passion, get one mean spin move to the basket and unreal rebound anticipation; akau is another one--strong, fast, and confident in the post; and Hilo High as two or three who can get it done on the post but their moves either a drop step or baby hook--so nothing real impressive to me--i would'nt consider scotty a post player yet because he's all over the court--definitly one of the best put-back players and the meanist hussle in the BIIF..
..these kids post moves going improve as they get older cause they going have to rely more on their head fakes, positioning, etc.. cause the knees wont be working as good...
..the best is try watch the old man league, you'll see some too good post players.. the kind guys that out of shape but they get the spin, head fake, up and under, baby hooks down... i know they thinking---if i only had these moves when i was in high school.
anyway, back to the question of post men (and then my focus to eastside big island) i know must have more but its late so i'm sure i forgot a few..
..just a thought..

Thompson of Kahuku is the best post player in the OIA. Williams of Farrington has the size and potential to be a good post player. Akina is a good guard but his safety valve is Thompson who can score inside. Thompson takes the pressure off of Akina. Kaimuki, Kalaheo are small inside, no help for Steizel or Fernandez. Moanalua doesn't have a true post, they run the floor well, high basketball IQ.

@ 96720,
Played against them 86' (Mark Vaught and Kaeo Ahsau)..they had a very good "big team", favored to contend but,...I think they ended up 2-10 that year. tuff year. Playing them (St. Anthony) was always a dog fight!!!!
We ended up 11-1Posted 2 years ago # -
Even though I keep up more with the ILH and OIA Red East, I gotta also give love to Storment from Campbell...He is putting up good numbers and word around the grapevine is that he has maximized his potential this season...Just reading the box scores in the papers he consistently averages around 18 points and 10 boards a game...
Campbell and Mililani don't stand a chance against the east teams if they don't get maximum production from their two bigs (Storment and Richardson)
Sorry just my opinion...

i agree with u for any west teams to win against the east is going to have to come from the bigs that i know of east this year doesnt really have really big guys this year unlike last year for ilh buckner is a monster on the west it would be richardson. me or haskins on the east i havent really seen the east play
Posted 2 years ago # -
Best natural post player is Swanson from MPI.
Best overall post player is Buckner from MPI.Posted 2 years ago # -
@ Mr. Tirade...
I would give Haskins more credit, but he looks more like a hybrid 3/4 on your team...He is not really a post player...
And I also agree with you about the east, only Kahuku has legitimate post players who look to score in the post...the west may have the overall advantage with post play, especially when in the playoffs teams that can execute in their half court offese is ussually successful...And having a post presence is the foundation for most half court offenses...

I agree with these.I think that Dakota Allen is a great Post player for Hilo. The way that he works in the paint and does those moves shows a really big help in his part. As, for Kamehameha Jayce Carvolho and Colby Cabatu they are attacking the basket and they get there rebounds. For waiakea Clayton a big post player does his part really good! These boys are doing really good and they need to keep it up!
Posted 2 years ago # -
My opinion on one of the better post players in BIIFs would have to be Jayce Cravalho from Kamehameha-Hawaii and Dakota Allen from Hilo-High

@Luna86- I usually drop some names just to get some flash back of players in common. I was waiting for a response from you. Me and brew usually do that to each other on this hoops forum just to get each other thinking about the old school Bball stories and memories. I hanged out with those boys and Russell Spencer when they were going to school at UH-hilo

I would go with Mattos/Morante (waiakea), Allen
(hilo), Carvalho (kam), Fairman (st.joseph) & Ekau (pahoa).Posted 2 years ago # -
I would say in the BIIF, Mattos is the best post player so far...I'd probably say Carvalho and Allen are tied for second...
I say Mattos first because he has some decent insides move but what separates him from the rest in the BIIF is that he's an excellent passer out of the post...Just really rare to see someone passing out of the post that well over here...
Posted 2 years ago # -
Not the best player this year but look out for the 6'7 kid that just started for Radford. Seen him play at Mililani and with a little work his on the map.
I like Richardson from Mililani due to the fact the i think he can play at the next level were he would have to move out to the SF spot. But his does his thing in the post for now
Posted 2 years ago # -
Chris Mattos is tops in the BIIF. 5'10" is small but he plays better then any other big man in the league. Jayce, Ekau, Fairman and Allen.....in that order. Allen does defend the block well neither does intimidate opposing teams. He can score and rebound but his passing is suspect. Not hating, just posting what I see. But then again, I'm only 5'6".
@96720 Russel Spencer, Mark Vaught and Kaeo Ah Sau. Mike Marciel and Jody Medeiros all played for Aloha Auto mens team. Great bunch of Maui guys. And we ALL went to class too.
