...alright folks here is the truth.. the best shoes to play b-ball in is something that is super light, kind-of snug, and protects the ankles.. they don't sell it anymore but the best b-ball shoe was the high cuts asiacs with the arch supports included..--i think it was made for volleyball but the jumpers used them for b-ball back in the day.. felt like you was playing bare feet with protection.. i can't find that shoe anymore..

The best shoes to ball in are what ever you are most comfortable in....I could never play in hightops...they just felt too restricting...always been a lowtop kind of guy...

@ REFF1. beanboy is asking if you are from big island. FBI. And I agree with you, those are the best shoes to ball with. But moanalua is sponsored by reebok, so we look more like a team.

Imagine when all there was to wear was Chuck T's. While colors have changed, and still rather stylsh in retro respect. It takes the cake for most uncomfortable shoe to ball with nowadays. No disrespect to converse but I give mad props to the Old School balllers who Ran it Hard with those puppys for a whole game.

Socrates -- back in the day, I ran into former Hilo High and Hawaii Pacific star Alan Tanabe in Foot Locker. He was trying on some shoes and I asked him what kind. "It's a volleyball shoe, much lighter than a basketball shoe and makes me jump higher," Alan told me. I thought for a moment and realized Alan's thinking. But if you ever saw Alan jump, he was no Michael Jordan or Isaiah Ekau. So, although he might have helped his own vertical jump by an inch or two with the shoes, Alan's enormous talent lied in putting the ball in the basket. He'd tear you up with a quick set shot or take it by you before lofting one of his running hooks off the glass. The guy was a scoring machine. I guess I could have said "C'mon Alan, you can't jump very high," but instead said, "Good idea," then walked away. Maybe I should have asked for his autograph -- the guy is one of Hawaii's all-time best high school and college players. He never met an opponent he couldn't school.

...that's so true Hi-Low.. i remember Alan wearing those same asiacs shoes i was referring to when we played pick up in the late 80s at the armory.. that was our connecting point.. we'd say "good shoes ehhh"... Alan would walk in with those shoes and a jump rope.. after lacing up, he'd jump rope while waiting for the "next".. i'd be all smiles when when i knew he was on my team cause that means we would have a pretty good chance of being on for the rest of the day.. cause back then you win-you stay on!!

..loved those days at the armory.. people came out of the wood work and, i'd always ask myself.. "gee these guys no work or what".. crazy gordon, mikey, johnny, bana folks, even the vulcan alums would come out like james bradly, vincent ray, lovejoy, ...wheww good fun.. i wish we could use the armory like that again.... just a thought..

Socrates -- yup, the Armory was the place in those years, with some pretty good games. I called it the "Unemployment League" because a lot of guys would show up every day. Man, I had a job and had to pick when I'd go. But it was fun with some great action. Not too many places to play anymore for the young ballers -- and the aging ones, too. I never met anyone who COULDN'T foul me. And when there were leagues and Walter Pacheco reffed by himself, those would be YouTube moments today (lol).

Remember working at Footlocker both in Hilo and Pearlridge.

Most shoes nowadays are lightweight and have good cushions. Nike, Reeboks and Converse still have the best selection of shoes to hoop in. Actually, if you use a good insole most shoes would be fine.....

And yes, I remember most of Hilo coming into my store and TRYING on shoes and wanting a huge discount...lol The Asics volleyball shoe was worn my a lot of people for it lightness. But it would break easily and had minimal lateral support. As for Johnny Reebok, he would purchase a top of the line shoe, play in it for a couple of days and try to return it...All he wanted to do was SHOW them....
