Stephen "Stu" Gabriel. Also starred and St Joe High
Anthony Carvalho. No nonsense but very fair
Charles McNicoll. Nice Hair, great demeanor and poised
Kent Higa. Unshakable, good relations with coaches
Worst:
Barry....sorry, he should stick to P&R games, LEARN is craft and then move up
OldG, I would go with Walter Pacheco!!! He is the only ref I seen call the whole game from halfcourt without moving. I remember when he was getting into it with a player and he said, "one more word out of you and you are gone from the game", the player said "OK" and he kicked the guy out of the game. Funny stuff.

i think Kent Higa is probably one of the best officials. he's fair and doesnt take things personal.
barry should should be forced to watch some of the games he does to see all his bad and non-calls. go back to referee school. i think if he refs P&R games he might ruin the game for the kids, lol. what's bad is i heard some middle school boys when they seen that barry was reffing say "ho, that ref sucks!"

If you've questioned his calls once or twice "before", he'll have something personal "against" you. Then you won't win if he's ref'ing. It goes for coaches and players. He flat out, should not be a ref at any level.
Wes -
Very obvious calls against opposing teams in "Pahoa". Did'nt he graduate from Pahoa? Wasn't his son playing for Pahoa last year? Why do they allow him to ref "in Pahoa?"
...and don't forget about Mr. PACHECO!!!!
Pat Pacheco -
Listens to the crowds comments and reacts to it. Takes things very personal and takes charge of the game in instances that "takes the focus off the kids playing and places it "on himself." You basically pay your $5 to watch him. LOL.

I need to say thanks to Sonny and Kimo because when I was coaching my last game Waiakea Vs. Hilo, I was losing my mind on them, but they did not take it personal. I questioned a few calls that they made and they explained their reason for the call, and we moved on. I lost my mind on a couple of calls and was speaking(not yelling) very loud in their direction, and they either ignored me or explained to me during the timeout why they made that call. Kimo even reversed a few calls that were obviously called wrong, good job kimo. It was a very intense game, but they did not get phased and just start calling techs on me to shut me up. They basically let me go off in my own little crazy world and reffed the game the best they could. Good job!!!!!

I think we need more refs like them (kimo /sonny) to let coaches "vent" (like you mentioned above). With no disrespect between disagrements, everything can be squashed and like you said "moved on".
great job, giving props to the zebrah's ...they sure need some once in a while -its a tough job and without them guys,,,,OUR KIDS CAN'T PLAY!

There was a gal last year who I think only did JV games. She was good. I don't see her this year.
Let me share his with you:
During the half time of the Kamehameah/Waiakea girls game this Ref, (Nobriga), comes by a table filled with WHS JV girls. As he walks by he says: "I may be old and cannot see but my mind is still intact". He then proceeds to enter the WAHINE'S restroom. This was witnessed not only by the JV girls, a couple to parents sitting there, but, "BUT" his peer Kevin Hirayama! True story....END OF STORY!

Worst refs by far...
Barry (infamous for calling calls that take place underneath the basket behind 3 6'5" guys, and he still manages to spot the crimes committed down there...), Wes Kobayashi (makes a terrible call, and when a coach asks about it he has no way to explain it...only if someone taught him to think before acting...), Darker Bald guy from Honoka'a, (no one knows his name, but im 90% sure you all know who i am talking about, i dont think i have seen anyone call any more blatantly obvious "anger calls."--when a coach/player asks a question and he comes down and calls a non foul or travel that doesnt exist)
Also, im pretty sure all of the above refs will testify that they can all see the future..haha..
Is it Darren Gomera? That's the only ref I could think who gets emotional out in Hamakua. I could be wrong.
worse Refs:Linda is terrible and the funny thing is she actually thinks she's good what a joke....other bad ones: Jose and wes, bald short japanese dude (hiloside).
Refs that will take things personal are Paul Nobriga, Mason souza, Lyle from westside,Pat "phantom calls" Pacheco,Wes.
