lets hear your thoughts about this years BIIF BOYS PLAYER OF THE YEAR (one vote only) my pick mitchel shintani of the hilo high vikings.took the lead at the end of the season. lead the team in scoring throghout the playoffs.waiakea threw 3 to 4 defenders at him in the title game and he took them all to the hole, easily.came thru when it counted most.if he was at waiakea,they would have won.my praise goes out to all the players this year.

For the East Jacob Andrade
For the West Brandon Bautista

...west side, easy pick--bautista even if they neva end up on top..bautista will go down in history as one of the best all-around guards big island produced..
...but east side hard to say who the coaches will pick.. however, it has to be a player from either st. joe or hilo high just cause they helped their team make it at the end..
...you know, i really like shintani's style of ply--again he reminds me of a JJ Vroom-Estabilio type (maybe not as talented but he get that style of play).. can handle the ball, can shoot, smart, team player, good attitude as he subs out.. Shintani edges out the rest of the Hilo players even Allen and Wong cause of how he continued to improve and peak at the end.. From the stands, my vote is for Shintani..
...Andrade.. loved to watch him play but he not as well-rounded as shintani, and although he makes a lot of shots, he also shoots a lot as well.. Shintani is more deliberate, more poised.. nonetheless, i give Andrade the award for most inspirational or mr. clutch.. he really added to the fun this year.. gotta love Andrade for sure.. he'll go down as one of st. joe's best shooters..
...on a side note, if Keaau won it i would go with handy and if Waiakea won it i would go with mattos, yet i think these two should make first team..
..just a thought..

East D-1 Shintani
East D-2 Andrade

andrade for his daily performances (HPA, pahoa, oh and that little 44pt game against hilo) and the ice water pumping in his veins.
oh and that BIIF championship too.Posted 2 years ago # -
Ritchie from Keaau.. He does it all. NO weakness..

West: Bautista, has to be him. I know Naehu can play, but they did fall twice to Kohala.
East: Same thing. I would give it to Andrade, came through in the clutch for them this year, and easily averaging 24+ and having a 37, 35, and 44 point game under his belt definitely helped. Shintani played extremely well near the end of the season and he did pick up his play. However Andrade has two notches in the win column against his team.

@obiwan
The coaches vote right? They gotta give it to Brandon Bautista. Hes just an outstanding player. Lots of talent but he has the most respect out of all the players i've seen this year.As for the east its gonna be hard to decide between Jacob and Mitchell. Both are good players. Mitchell stepped up towards the end of the season and in playoffs leading Hilo to its first championship since 2000. But Andrade has been big all year long and i think that the cardinals deserved it.

Is it just seperated East and West or do they have both division I east and west POY and division II east and west POY. That will make the difference on who gets it.
Posted 2 years ago # -
If it's like girls volleyball was then it's just separated by East and West...Not really sure how they are going to do it though...

@MJ23
Yes, the Coaches are the ones that vote.
@brew
I believe that it is going to be just East and West side since everyone plays everyone on both sides.

thanks bibby and obi!!!!

@brew
Anytime! Since you are on the thread, who are your picks from both sides?
Posted 2 years ago # -
u guys are just talking about the POY. What about the complete 1st team players on the east and west.

@brew
Good point. You should start a new thread.

Well I always said a player of the year should be chosen from the team that wins the BIIF Title and a player from that team that consistantly contributed in all aspects of the game from the start of the regular BIIF season until winning that title.
Hilo D1:
Scotty Wong - Although he comes of the bench (excepted that role) but does have alot of playing time when he comes in, very athleticism, talented and is a junior. He has been there consistant contributer in all aspects of there games from the start of the season till winning that BIIF Title and to me that is what you call a "Player Of The Year" but don't know if he will be a candidate because his a junior but to me give credit where credit is due.Mitchell Shintani - Another good candidate for POY. His a starter, A senior, Very talented but peaked only from the past 3 games and yes he did peak when it counted for the BIIF Title but so did his teammates including Scotty Wong.
ST.Joseph D2:
Jacob Andrade - A starter, A senior, Very athleticism & talented. His been a consistant contributer from the start of the regular season until winning the BIIF Title. But honestly I never saw a player that have that amount of green light to take that amount of 3 point attemps and the best part of it he can shoot from anywhere and way beyond, but the boy can shoot the 3's and that brought them back in games when they were down and also won them games. He plays with high intensity and always gives a 100% (a fun player to watch).Other great candidates that should be highly considered...
Waiakea D1:
Chris Mattos - A senior, Played 4 years varsity 1st year was the 6th man off the bench & A starter for his remaining 3 years. Talented, Plays with alot of passion, Unselfish never looks for himself always giving a 100% to help his team win & For a post player never saw one that is a great passer. But he also has been a consistant contributer from the start of the season until making it to playoff's & getting that berth to states.Kea'au D1:
Handy - One of my favorite enjoyable players to watch. A starter, A junior, Talented, Humble & Always gives a 100% never gives up until the end & Also has been a consistant contributer for there season. The boy can score from all over the floor inside & outside and that makes it hard for defenders to watch him. His probably one of the most improved in skills players that I have seen this year but that goes to show how hard & dedicated this player is and any coach would love to have players like him on their team.Posted 2 years ago # -

@ bAllERMAN,
That would be a sweet debate ....
B. Bautista vs J. Andrade
Tuff one,....but i'm sure other board members would love to break down the intangibles between both of these great playa's!!
Just off the top of "my" head...I would give a very, very slight edge to Bautista (4 straight years of high level ballin'!)
But what do I know?Posted 2 years ago # -
@ \m/6..... Great break down. I have a feeling that Shintani will get the nod due to his performance down the stretch. Coming off the bench or starting Wong makes a good candidate for POY. As my coach would say:" it's who's on the court when the end buzzer sounds that counts."
Div 2~ The reigning P.O.Y. is BAUTISTA!!!!! And he deserves all the consideration and more. But if the P.O.Y. is chosen from the Championship team then it's Andrade.
A lot of parity in the BIIF this season. Good luck coaches on your respective votes. Please be FAIR.

@bAllERMAN
My bad I forgot about Bautista (kohala) he should be down as one of other great candidates along with Mattos & Handy to be highly considered for POY.
Kohala D2:
Bautista - A Senior, I think played 4 years varsity, Talented/Humble player, Great Personality/respectful & In my eyes the top point guard on the "Big Island". Excellent court vision, Passer/Assists, Penetrates & Dishes off well and the best part about him is that you don't know weather his going to pass/assist or score so that confuses/breaks the defenders. Plays with all heart.Posted 2 years ago # -
If Waiakea had won the DI championship, Chris Mattos would have been my choice for POY. Being that Hilo won, Shintani would be the logical choice.
Bautista is my choice as the best in the West, even if Kohala didn't win.
Posted 2 years ago # -
i dont see how shintani could get the nod when they went 0-2 against andrade & co.
especially when andrade dropped 44 all over them like hot fire. (a game when shintani scored only 10)
and if its because shintani's performance down the stretch, don't you think andrades 24pt game against HPA should give him the nod?
i may be pro-st joe, but its for good reason.Posted 2 years ago # -
@ M7777 I'm a bit perplexed. You say that Bautista should get the POY even if Kohala didn't take it all.(good pt)
Then Mattos has to be your pick...No matter the logic.
No disrespect intended. apologies.
Posted 2 years ago # -
@m7777 why not andrade then? they won biifs and went 2-0 against the D-1 BIIF champs, hilo high.
Posted 2 years ago # -
@ OldG,
Nice man...."perplexed"...Mr. Chris Berman himself dude!
"Swammy"
Good reading on these posts....Gentleman, no matter how we break it down (all-stars and POY's)...there will always be continued debates, different views and opinions regarding who should be or who shouldn't be....very interesting and entertaining?
