Waiakea won. If they continue to play the way they did they wont make it far. The coach needs to know when to make adjustments. The first 2 games in pre season weren't played very well, they might have won, but they didn't play well, then they made some changes and they started playing like a team and sharing the ball.....lots of ball movement and more wins. I'm not sure if nerves got the best of them or if the coach went back to his same old style, but when the plays are designed only for one person and we all know who that is.......then whats going to happen when the opposing team recognizes that and shuts her down? Just my oppinion.
Hilo on the other hand has a new coach and he's doing a great job! Ben did his homework and knew just what players he needed to shut down. Lisa fouled out and that took away one of his best shooters/defender. Our girls seems much happier and I think if they keep it up, they will win Waiakea in the second round. Watch out Biif here we come......strong and hard!

Hilo could suprise some teams. Plus they have a lot of seniors so that can help them.

Waiakea needs to learn how to run an offense. That seems to be the same problem like before. But when you have an all-state caliber player like Imai, the offense should run through her hands at somepoint.

Waiakea plays Keaau on Tuesday. Should be a good one.

    @ agree oiailhbiiffan,

They blew everyone out @ Moanalua Tournament with a different starting lineup then last night. The lineup that finished the game is there best lineup from what I heard. Yes! Agree, that everything is for one player. It shouldn’t be basketball is a team sport just look at KONA they play as a TEAM everyone share’s the ball!!! Waiakea has girls that can post up and are not used even Kami has a miss match if she goes to low or high post. COME ON!

@BIIFFAN-from what I heard, Imai doesn't like to run an offense....she likes to push the ball and just shoot and alot of times loses the ball! The coach needs to pick up on that and let someone else handle the ball.
@Ramdwn31-I heard about that tournament also, not sure about the lineup that Waiakea used but it seems at that tournament they made adjustments and it worked well. If only the coach could see what others see! Don't get me wrong, Imai is a good player, but needs to recognize that she needs her teammates to pull off the WIN!!!

I have been reading post on this website for about 2 months and I finally have the nerve to write. This particular post is very interesting.

I agree with Ramdwn31. Imai is an awesome talent, but he is right this is a team sport. No one individaul player can win by herself. Just ask Micheal Jordan.

@BIIFFan i hope your joking. You made a statement saying that they need to run an offense. IMHO The only offense they seem to run is for one particular person. The play I like the best is when she gets the ball and all their players stand around and watch her try and score with multiple moves. Maybe the players should just wait on defense and let her play by herself on offense. I saw one sequence where she turned over the ball two times in a row then the next time down the court the coach calls a play for her. The coach needs to realize that he has many quality players who have different strentghs and weaknesses that he needs to take advantage of. Its obvious to everyone in the crowd who is going to get the ball and shoot. why doesnt the coach see it like everyone else can see it. Take off the blinders and realize what you have. Its not just that one player.

Hilo played well and seemed to have executed the coachs gameplan. The Okimoto girl was a big loss when she got her 5TH foul they loss her 3 point shot ability and her good defense which gave Alissa Ferreia problems all night. The Moe girl stepped up big time when it counted.

This is not a knock on Imai she is just doing what the coach is asking of her. She is a great player.

Waiakea cannot win without Imai but they need to use her more effectively and use her teammates in the right way. @BIIFFan is it not the coaches job to make sure they run the offense properly.LOL.

I agree with what everyone is saying. Its going to be tuff espically when Imai gets in foul trouble.. It falls back ALL on the COACH.

Let just hope the coach make some adjustments and they play a good game aganist Keaau. Keaau beat them last year, so it should be a dogfight

Just wondering why such a big disparity between three point shots. Is it Hilo's defense? Is it Waiakea's offense? Vice versa. Anyone with answers?

Why not put Kamie in the post more often. With her athletic ability she would be unstoppable. And if she was stopped she could just kick the ball out when the defenses collapse.

all good points.. in Hilo Kamie can be a dominant post player which should be playing their more often. But when she goes to college she will be playing PG/SG

@BIIFFan kine of confused. U say that she can dominate as a post player but because she is going to college and play PG/SG she is playing that position. Is it at the expense of her team that she improve her PG/SG game. Shouldnt she do whatever it takes to make the team better and work on those skills at practice or on her own.

It's not Kamie's choice to play point. From what I see, it's the coaches choice. LIke I said earlier, it falls back on the coach

Todays paper has an article written by one of the BI's most respected sports writers, Bill O'Rear. The article contains a HUGE inacuracy. Anyone catch it???

I watched the game yesterday between Kamehameha Hi and St. Joe. What do you think is wrong with there coaches? Why is it that even when they play a weaker team they make sure they run them straight into the ground! Shame on you!!!! Why is it that the coaches left the 1st string in and didn't really play the other players as much? Are the coaches trying to prove a point? IMO the only point they are proving is that they have NO CLASS!!!!

    @BIIFFan
Well if you are worried about where Kami plays in college and if the coach is thinking like that what about the 11 other player’s on team who only will be playing at this level? Like I said, basketball is a team sport she has lots of time to work on her Point guard skill during the off season. Right now the focus is about representing your school your team not about Kami being a point guard in college. It’s about finding ways to win a game for the 12 player’s that is on the roster. It's always good to have a go to player and she is one of the best is the state right now. The last time I check no one individual became a champion in basketball, A TEAM BECOMES CHAMPS with ROLE PLAYER'S!

I agree full court press man to man for two quarters and your first group in almost that whole first qtr. That’s what I heard and have Chelsea still in the second qtr picking up full man. St. Joe girls had a hard time DRIBBLING the ball up the court. Coaches YELLING At their player’s PICK UP YOUR MAN MOVE YOUR FEET, MOVE YOUR FEET.. LOOK AT THE SCORE!!! The score at the end of 1st qtr 28-0 and come out pick up full man again.. That what I heard.....

BIIFFan - good catch! I would not expect a slip of the tongue like that from Mr. O'Rear.

re: Kamie - This is really not her fault. It all falls on the Coach who is doing her NO favors by letting her run wild on the floor. When she is on, it works...but when her crazy shots are not falling, it looks really bad that the coach just lets her keep shooting. It is becoming all to common on the BI to have one PHENOM on the team where the other players have to sit back and figure out how to play around them. Is this helping the girls, or exploiting the chosen few. Are the coaches really helping these phenoms prepare for college, where they will be outplayed by everyone anyway. Hello, have these coaches seen the mainland competition??? Why would we incourage out of control ball hogging? Why not sell these girls as hard working students that are coachable and have good attitutes. Until this gets addressed, our Hawaii girls will not be successful at the next level. My suspicion is that a D1 Hawaii High School Championship is the one and only goal for most coaches here. Very sad! These girls are getting ripped off, and yet we continue to play their games...

@ grassshack-well said! These girls wont go know where with this coach! Everyone see's the hogging but him. Maybe he needs corrective lenes. LOL

@Ramdwn31-thats all true. I heard them yelling that and thought.....are they out of there minds! My guess is that the coaches are trying to sell their star player. Why come out in the second half still pressing? They knew that they had the game, they could have backed off a bit and let the second string in and give them some playing time without Chelsea in there!! CRAZY

    @ OIAILHBIIFFAN,

I here ya, regarding Kam "rubbing it in" vs. St. Joe.

I heard that the starters played alot more then they should have, running up the score and pressing alot.

Sad that we have to hear this

Wow, it sounds like Waiakea lost the game last night when I read this blog/post. Hilo did play a good game and deserve credit for how well they played. But, to me what is more impressive is how bad Waiakea played and they still won the game. If they make the necessary adjustments and the players(including mine) take care of the ball better and make better decisions they should be okay. It will not be easy to win the east because everyone is so familiar with eachother and how they play. We all have to remember how young Waiakea is and there will be growing pains along the way. We all hope they continue to improve each day at practice and at every game.

Once again good job Hilo, you look like a new and improved team. Not only are you playing good basketball, but it looks like you folks are enjoying yourself playing basketball.

Waiakea keep your head up and keep moving foward.

Yes, it's very frustrating watching a Waiakea game. All it is, is the Imai girl dribbling the ball for about 30 seconds every possession and then firing up a contested shot. Don't get me wrong she is extremely talented, but that is not something that will fly at the next level. Honestly, how many college teams do you see have one person dribble the ball around for 30 seconds each time down the court?...(Except UH Manoa mens team)...

Im not getting on the girl, her potential is through the rough. However if she could polish the rest of her game, passing, decision making, smarter defense (IE: help, and weak side rotations), also a wider variety of live ball moves (every time she gets the ball we all know she is gonna drive middle and spin)...she will be a very valuable asset at the next level.

Right now she gets away with this because of the Coaches allowing her to do so, and the rest of the league being so down for the past few years.
