KONA AND WAIAKEA IN FINALS. KONA WINS.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I attended the Konawaena-Hilo game just to see Kona. Awa is awesome! She looks so cool and relaxed out there and you don't even notice she scored almost 20. And only a sophomore. Galderia must still be coming back from her injury, but you can see the talent. She's quicker than a lot of the best boys. Very disciplined team. Great coaching!!!
Hilo played well considering they had absolutely no height.

Yeah saw the games and Kona is a very disciplined team. Their players do not panic and rarely make pressured decisions. Dawnelle is a very good player and she controls the game her presents on the court is very mature for a sophomre I don't know I think she's a better player then Kami out there. To bad Hilo had so many turnovers. Passing the ball without even knowing if their team mate was there..straight into the hands of Kona. They also looked tired they couldn't run for fast breaks they were always trailing.
The Waiakea and Honokaa game was disappointing. Waiakea didn't have to play hard you know that they were relaxed when they start putting third stringers into play. They could have easily run the score +20. To bad Keaau couldn't finish the game between Honokaa that would have been a better match up..didn't Keaau only lose to Waiakea 1st time by 4 points (tons of bad free throws) then was it by 6/8 points the next round.
Good luck to the two teams should be interesting tonight. But I think Kona might just have that little edge over Waiakea tonight only because they usually have 5 players out there who looks like they trust each other to their job. Waiakea still has a few team players that cause to many "JV" mistakes that cause huge turnovers..last night sadly one player had at least 3/4 turnovers in a row...can't do this against Kona.

Well if Keaau never sandbag their season, maybe theye would still be playing..
COM ON, stalling with 1:30 left and down by one aganist Hilo ... Who does that now...
Keaau wanted to either win by one or lose so that they dont need to face Kona..
It's good that they wern't playingPosted 2 years ago # -
A lot can be said about Honoka'a in the semi-finals, too. If you watched both games, against Keaau they were calm and the team chemistry just clicked. The intensity was there, and it looked like the girls were more focused and wanted it more. I think Honokaa went into the Waiakea game intimidated, because if they would have played Waiakea at home when players like Nacnac and Ishii Hummel were making key shots, it would have been a completely different story in the semi finals. I think Honokaa realistically had a shot, and that's not just a homer speaking. Maybe they were too amped for this game, or anxious. They definitely looked off, and you could tell the chemistry was just horrible.

After Kona made their run the Waiakea girls were a little rattled. The refs missed some calls that could have helped out Waiakea. Am i right SF31?

NBN808: What would you do differently if you were the coach? I'm curious to know!!

You haven't asked me, Kalei, but I would have set screens for Kammie at the top of the key primarily to force switches to get Galderia off of her. If some teammate who had a weaker or shorter defender set picks for Kammie, she should get better attempts at the basket. Moe would have been my choice to set picks. If Galderia tried to stay with Kammie, Moe should have open 3s. If Kona hedges, one of the post players could set picks and slip screen to the basket.
Give Galderia credit. She took Kammie out of her game, 1 on 1.
Just my thoughts....

@kalei- like i stated before,i would start my offense from the block,As you seen, kona played man to man D. I would of isolate kamie on one side and let her post up on Lia. i also would advise kamie to be patient with ball on post and see what kona does. If they decide to play straight up D, i would tell her she has the green light to shoot and if they decide to double up on her that leaves Moe and Alyssa wide open for an uncontested shot or penetration to the middle and maybe a give and go right back to Kamie, and with that in mind you got your top 3 performers having something to do with game rather then just 1.
Kona plays agrresive defense so you have to attack what they give you, and that is try and get them in foul trouble early. With the horrible refs that is officiating now days your chances of getting them in foul trouble is 70-30. When Kamie is playing PG there is no ball movement, look when kamie went out of game for a moment, alyssa took control of offense by attacking the middle and then dishing off for a score. On the other side of the game i felt awa took alyssa out of her game completely, she did not have the aggressiveness that i seen before, no hustle at all on transition from O to D. What i am trying to say is if Kamie was ever to established her self on block by either scoring or getting them in early foul trouble that would of open the game for the rest of players to be more involved with the offense. Sometimes players needs to be involved in offense to get themselves into the game and thats what i feel was lacking from ferreira and moe during the game. Kona plays very good D when ball is in front of them because they are use to being attack from the top of key so by having to start your offense from the post it takes them out of position by having them play D with there back to the ball. And on defense they had no business playing kona Man to man,Kona is known to beat you by pure athletic ability and smartness and not by outside shooting so if you play a 1-3-1 defense it protects you a little by having help at all times. Look at all the scoring kona did, was it from shooting the lights out from outside.....NO....Posted 2 years ago #
