so what you guys think about how the BIIF is shaping up for the girls basketball?
Kona just seems to be unstoppable right now. who u guys think will follow? I'm think it could be a toss up between Waiakea and Keaa'a right now.
Hows everything else shaping with the other islands? who's making playoffs and even states?

BIIF girls follow up

Of course Kona is going to be unstoppable in the BIIF.
1-They run a dirty program and the get paid for letting players live in their home. They let arguably the most talented player in the Big Island live in their home and attend their school on a GE.
2-The BIIF is having a down year. The other teams (the ethical ones) run a much cleaner program, follow the rules, and do not let players out of district live in their house. So they are not as competitive.

Kona is the 3rd best team in the state right now. But I do agree with HIHoopsFan. They are not setting good examples for their players up there. I heard from a reliable source that a few girls are unhappy with that situation and they feel some favoritism is being shown. That is too bad.
The top 3 teams are Punahou, Farrington, and Konawaena. I think Punahou is the best right now since they are the most versatile. They run the most players, have sound guard play, and their young players are really coming on. They can press fullcourt, pick up man full court, or slow it down with zones and variations of match-ups.
Farrington is the biggest team, but they can only play one style. They need to slow it down pound it inside and take advantage of their size. They have average guard play and are inconsistent shooters. If you pack in the zone, they often struggle. The OIA just do not have enough talented teams to test them.
Kona may have 3 of the top 25 players in the state (Hanato-Smith, Galdeira, Awa). But, they are young, and do not go very deep. When they played Punahou, that depth really hurt them. They can't take advantage of their speed and athleticism since playing man and pushing the ball hurts when you can only go 6-7 deep. Also, how much are they going to improve beating up on marginal Big Isle teams?
Punahou has really improved since the preseason. That Iolani loss was great for them, role players like Brand, Ching, and Sataraka are really stepping up. If Punahou's role players step up, I can't see Farrington or Konawaena beating them.

Well, Keaau and Waiakea plays on Monday at Waiakea.. The winner will come 2nd place in the BIIF's but I think that Waiakea is peaking at the right time. They played Kona very well and they beated up on Hilo with Vicky... But Keaau has beaten them twice this year so it will be a very close game.
I heard that Kealakehe put in a petition about the whole Galdeira living with the coaches.. So that should be interesting...
Posted 3 years ago # -
Hello BIIF fan, even though Kealakehe submitted a petition, I cannot see Kona doing anything at the school level. Kona girls basketball bring the school status. They don't seem to get attention academically and rarely athletically, so this is their only form of status. I do not think they are breaking the rules, but it is super shady.
If the BIIF gets involved, I would be shocked if any penalties or sanctions happen. The Big Island is bruddah/bruddah kine. They won't do anything.
But if you need to put negative light on your program to win a measley title, then so be it. Personally, I would rather teach ethics and doing it the correct way.
I wonder if they can even look at themselves in the mirror.

I just heard it from some people who have kids on the team in Kona. The kid's parents are giving the coaches money to have the kid live there.
It doesn't matter if the money is for clothes, food, electricity, or whatevers....
That is wrong!

We all have rights to our own comments: so I feel Konawaena has its inner problems but they are individually great girls!!!! They work together, they play hard, and they all individual goals that their parents are supportive of. If Lia feels she needs to play on a Kona team to improve her game that it is her choice not yours or anyone else. This girl has a chance for an impressive scholarship like some other selected girls..bello, imai, hanato girls, awa girls, and naki..but you have to play on a team that shines and stands out. LOOK at PUNAHOU THEY INVITE top girls from around the states...to go to their school to play...they recruit around the state and so does Kamehameha and Waiakea. I'm sorry that Keaau does not stand out to have these individual girls want to go to Keaau. Naki needs to push the girls to top seed to make it to the states to be recognized by scouts...She is a good player and she does lead the team...Leave this sport positive!!!!!!!!! Hanato Smith is a very nice individual!!! Others are talented and most likely is loved by their fans!!!! Having people's negative opinions really does not help these girls learn to play as a team and with good sportmanship. I seen the keaau and Konawaena game...I was shocked to see Keaau girls saying very inappropriate words to the Kona Girls on court. They were playing like savages b/c us fans create that atmosphere. Konawaena JV girls need to tone their cheering down..it is not good sportmanship and mature. I hope the best for all the girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!Make Hawaii proud and make it further in this sport!!

First of all can you name me one single Konawaena player who has ever been recruited to a top Division I school?
This has nothing to do with recruiting? Can you name a single Punahou or Iolani athlete (not related) that lives with their coach?
Are you that ignorant?
Maybe if the Keeau coach let kids live with them, more girls would want to go there.
Your comparison between Kona, Punahou, and Kamehameha is a sad and poor one.
There is a big difference between allowing a student to attend the school on financial aid and letting a kid live at the coach's house.
As for Punahou girls basketball, they do offer some impressive financial aid packages for some players, but in the last 6-7 years, not a single Punahou Girls Basketball Player has had a 100% tuition stipend.
As for inviting, an ILH school cannot make contact with an athlete until the parents make first contact.
Do you just ramble off from the mouth, or do you actually do any research to validate your opinions?
So to close, there is a HUGE difference between offering a financial aid package for tuition, where the parents still need to drive their kids to school, or maybe dorm at Kamehameha where other kids dorm too, and allowing one player to live at a coach's house.
I am sorry that you are too naive to see that.

What proof do you have to say that Waiakea recruits? Just curious
Posted 3 years ago # -
Even if Waiakea does recruit (what do they have as an incentive anyway), I bet no players on the Waiakea team lives with the coaches.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Although it would take time to prove, I bet if you took every single HHSAA sport, both boys and girls, and you looked at how many players (non-related of course) live with their coaches, I would strongly believe that only the freshman girl playing for Kona is the only one.
If living with the coaches was the norm, how come more coaches don't do it? It's not like this one girl lives in poverty, or her district school is worse academically than Kona, or she is an orphan.
Like I said before, it's very easy to drive your kid to school. If you want your kid to go to Kona, that is perfectly fine, but you either drive your kid to school, or find a relative in that district to take care of your kid.
The fact that the Awa's allow this kid to live with them makes me really question their morals and integrity.
The only ethical excuse they could have is being too naive. And if you are that naive, then you have no business being the head of anything.
So, either Kona is the most unethical program of any sport in the state, or the Awa's are the reincarnation of Jesus himself....
Personally, I don't believe the latter.

You know all of this talk about Kona's questionable player, every team should be looking in their own back yards before commenting about others. Do you know how much teams have the "district exempt" going on that should be looked at as shady as well. Come on how do think these schools like Waiakea and Hilo build such a strong program every year. From what I understand Kamie Imai went to Kea'au public school until her 8th grade then all of a sudden went to Waiakea (I don't think the family moved)or Alyssa F. who also lives out in Puna but district exempt to go to Waiakea. Then you have Hilo Vicky T. all the way from Pahoa but is exempted to go to Hilo. Can you imagine if ALL players were to play for the school thats in their dwelling district, then maybe the tables would be more even or it would change up more. Come on how can Hilo and Waiakea constantly be top contenders years after year. So, this Kona player might not have the ability to drive the far distance to attend Kona but these other players can drive that mere 1/2 hour and choose the school to play at and no one sees this as a problem.

what if leah galdeira went to the worst team in the biif and stayed with the team coach and did not guide her team to the playoffs or be a contender for a state title would we be hearing all your CRYING........NOT
Posted 3 years ago # -
Lia could be in Alaska, living with some Eskimos, on the worst team in the league, and if she was living with the coach then it would be wrong!
Are u really that foolish or ignorant, or are you just acting to make these posts more exciting?

No one is questioning the GE process. If a family feels a school out of district is the proper fit for their kid, then power to them. It is fine as long as they go through the proper channels.
But your comparison between GE's and a kid living in a coach's house is ridiculous.
Only an idiot would make a weak comparison like that.As for Hilo being a contender? When? When was the last time Hilo went to states? Maybe during the bronze age, haha!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Thank you very much KonaStyle, some people just don't get it. A GE is not illegal! Some people do things the correct way. EASTSIDEHOOPAHOLIC wake up!!!!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Let's be real. It's sad that many people put more focus and importance on athletics than academics.
No one is saying that attending Kona is wrong. It is the method that it is being done which is wrong. The blame is solely on the parents, administration, and most of all the Awa's.
Manti Te'o and Robbie Toma live in Laie and can either bus to Punahou or catch a ride. That is a farther than Honokaa to Kona. Neither of them live with Kale Ane.
Shawna Kuehu, previously mentioned, lived in Waianae. She either bused to school or caught a ride. With rush hour traffic, the ride can be anywhere between 1-2 hours. That is worse than Honokaa-Kona. She did not live with Mike Taylor.
There is no rule stating a player cannot live with a coach. However, there are many unethical things that are considered not criminal. So since it isn't identified as criminal, but still unethical, should we support it since it may have been overlooked as criminal?
Like I have said a 100 times, I have no problem with any player getting a GE or a scholarship. But, it should be done the correct, honest, and ethical way.
The moment the playing field is compromised, and an unfair field is created, then you have failed as a coach.
It doesn't matter what school, what state, how talented the player is, and what the team's record is. Wrong is wrong, and this is by far one of the worst things I have ever heard of.
This is almost as bad as the basketball coach (not using his name) who sold Kalua Pig, then used all the fundraising money to take his family to Disneyland.
This is very comparable to that. I would never allow my child to play for Konawaena. This type of behavior suggest that winning games is more important than playing fair and teaching life skills.
While a small amount of girls may get college scholarships, none of them will make this a career. They should be using basketball to learn life skills that can be added with their academic skills to prepare them for better things.
They are learning how to cut corners, cheat the system, showing favoritism, and being irresponsible.
No amount of state titles will ever erase this type of behavior. And I will state, no person who ever teaches kids this has any business coaching or teaching teenagers.

To make it clear I was not doing any comparisons of Kona's situation and District exempts. If its not done legally then by all means...but this has been brought up 1/2 way through the season and she continued to play all the way 'til the playoffs so sadly the BIIF committee must not have found anything illegal about it. Papers must be all in place. As far as if this is right well....to bad they can't penalize for that.
But I still stand strong about moving your kids for the sake of playing for another school and this does happen it creats a uneven playin' field with stacked teams. (This does not include any private school scholarships/tuition). If they stopped all of this we wouldn't have anything to question at anytime.

This is in reference to eastsidehoopaholic....
I would guess she has gone through the legal DOE measures of securing a GE to attend Kona. I am not questioning her and her family's decision to attend Kona on a GE. That is not the issue at hand. She can go to any school she wants. I do not hold the kid responsible at all. They have not done anything illegal.
I am questioning the decision to live with her coach.
That is clearly preferential treatment. Do you agree that when a player (not-related) lives with their coach, a very personal relationship (due to human nature) will exist and evolve.
Even if it is not intended, the coach/player relationship will have human bias based on inviting a player into your home.
The relationship turns from professional to personal. That is wrong.
When a coach offers a service to only one player (daughter not included) of a team, favoritism exists. The playing field is no longer level.
I am not saying it is criminal or against any HHSAA, BIIF, or DOE rules. I am saying it is very unprofessional and very unethical.
So to restate my statement. I am not objecting to her attending Kona on a GE.
I am objecting strongly about the kid living with her coach.
Are you saying what I have listed above is wrong eastsidehoopsaholic???
Posted 3 years ago # -
It's not illegal, it's unprofessional and unethical.
Can anyone tell me why it's okay for a coach to let a player live with them when they only live 45-60 minutes away, are not on welfare, is not an orphan, and the parents are not disabled?
If it was okay, why don't more coaches do this? Is Coach Awa Jesus, Mother Teresa, and Joan of Ark, all rolled up into one???
Posted 3 years ago # -
And what is wrong with this girl's parents, that they cannot wake up every morning, invest in their kid, and drive her to school.
This is done so often anywhere. From my research, this type of behavior by the parents, could really cripple her self-esteem and self-worth....

Um it was brought up a little after the Iolani GIrls Classic.
Isn't it getting sickening that people cannot see what HoopFanatic is saying.
Buddy, no one is questioning that she is going to Konawaena. A few are questioning about the decision to live with her coach.
This forum really shows the lack of education in Hawaii. That is the hidden meaning. Many people cannot comprehend what people are writing and cannot understand the point being made.
It sickens me to read some of the uneducated responses. The Hooopfanatic person clearly makes his or her point then someone comes on her and defends or tries to defend their argument understanding what is being written.
I now have a migraine reading some of the most ignorant pieces in the world.....
Serious guys, take your writing seriously!
Posted 3 years ago # -
If you have a migrane, relax, be happy, and support your favorite team or become a Coach and lead by example. I don't want to take my writing seriously when it come to bickering about this and that and little things such as Lia living with the Coach. Why dont you go find out the rules and let us know what you find and bring it to the open. Hoops opinions is obviously directed to Coach Awa or the Awas. There must be more to this for Hoops. All I want share with everyone is the BIIF tournament was so much fun. I'm sorry I did not get to see Imai play for Waiakea against Konawaena, this Imai girl has potential. Hats off to Bello, she did a great job along with the rest of the team. Hats off to Hilo they did well too. All the girls played great basketball this year. So much talent. Most importantly: Congrats to Konawaena! You were awesome...need some work in areas. I hope Coach Awa can pull you all together and represent the Big Island as ONE solid team. Congrats to all the parents for having outstanding athletes on this small island!!!!!!!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Isn't Hawaii the biggest island? And are you serious? You really think allowing a player to live with the coach is a small thing, wow?
I feel for the other kids on the team that hasn't been given this opportunity and have been subjected to favoritism the entire year.
Posted 3 years ago # -
"I don't want to take my writing seriously when it come to bickering about this and that and little things such as Lia living with the Coach."
Obviously you don't take your writing seriously. We all can read, or at least attempt to read your post.
This sort of attitude are the very reasons why academics are so low on the Big Island. The fact that you just said allowing a kid to live with the coach shows your ignorance and also shows that winning basketball games are more important than playing fair.
Hey 4fun, I am not sure there are any rules about giving players cash to play bball games. So, since it is possible that there aren't any rules, all of the coaches should pay their good player cash since it isn't against the rules, huh?
