haha this crack me up! Anyways the battles that I would like to see is:
Apele-Handy
Kagawa-Kawaha
Berinobis-Carvalho
Carvalho-Fairman
Janado-Handy
@ Ed
Randy doesn't like lau lau! He likes kalua pig so Kalani wins by forfeit.
@Brian~ Are you saying that Coach Randy does not like vegetables?
Here's my match up:
Handy - Wong
Handy - Fairman
Handy - Carvalho
Handy - Fischer
Handy - Apele
Am I a Handy fan? Yes. But my point on this: With his versatility I would like to him match up with the top players at each position. I listed Fischer in there because he's a returning state champion.
Nice list OldG. It's true...Handy can play against anyone no matter the match-up. He is the best player in the BIIF right now, though, he won't have the best team this upcoming season. Hopefully he can get some more firepower backing him up this upcoming year.
@ OldG
Yes and what's worse is he doesn't care much about how his laces look like!
Nice to see you back! You coming to Agena's clinic on Labor Day weekend?
Lace'um up! B, I will take a swing by to observe the many talented players as well as coaches. Maybe I can steal some drills too. lol
@ OldG
All kidding aside, if there is something you wish to know about drills, I have access to the following:
Locally
Coach Agena (Everything)
Coach Taylor (Screens, fades, curls positioning, mental discipline, basically everything)
Coach Dulan (Conditioning)
Coach Renfro (Explosive movements, flexibility)
Mainland
Jason Wright (JW Basketball, Pro Trainer)
Ganon Baker (Ganon Baker Basketball, Pro Trainer)
Alan Stein (Stronger Team, Coach at DeMatha High)
Like Randy says, there are no secrets in basketball but there may be drills to better suit your needs. Let me know if I can be of assistance! Look forward to seeing you guys there!
E mahalo nui Brian. Conditioning and flexibility sounds like something i can learn. I'll get in touch with you later about it.
Who do you guys think are the best matchup to watch this year?
I would say Handy vs. Apele or Janado
All three are former teammates. If things could happen then I would say Handy vs. Ontiveros from Kealakehe and or vs. Lorenzo from Honokaa.
Richie and Kamu are teammates with Apele and Silva, Inc., AKA Hoop Dreams! That IS a good match-up of two smaller players who play big against 4 or 5 positions.
Yeah that Hoop Dreams team is a good bunch of ballerz! And they are all close friends no matter if they play on the same team or guard each other! Richie can guard anyone in the BIIF...period! Don't get me wrong, he's human but he's the best and it goes to show with his style of play...he can guard and score against anyone!
Also I just received word that Jayce Carvalho will play this upcoming high school season. I heard he might get a full-ride from HPU in baseball...congrats!
THAT IS TRUE about richie! BUT, Richie has lost a step. He hurt his knee recently and now he needs too work more hard to play defense. I think that Apele and MAYBE Kagawa are the only people who have a chance of beating him one on one. They play against each other a lot and both of these players just dont back down. Janado can probably get a shot off of handy but cant beat him.
@Swagz
Wow, congratulations to Jayce, I wish the best for him. I am surprised he is playing basketball, especially if he has a shot at getting a scholarship, let alone a full ride, to HPU. There must be some sort of rule against that, as far as HPU's scholarship rules go, just to make sure that someone doesn't blow their knee out playing basketball and now they lose their scholarship for baseball. It would make sense.
the one match-up i will be keeping my eye on all year will be between kam-hi vs st. joseph, my pre season favorites. during the summer league, st. joseph threw a box and one on "knock it" apele and it worked! something for kam to prepare for. perhaps throw it back on "thrill"! kona, with coach donny awa at the helm, aint going to be no pushover! officiated kona's game in hilo and as usual, came away impressed with coach donny awas style of play and coaching! boys play hard and with alot of heart! dawnyell was playing with the boys and stayed in step, not missing a beat! a player match-up i will personally be keeping a close eye on will be WHOEVER is guarding brend shropshire (6'7" 215lbs.soph) of keakakehe and jacob kackly (6'2" jr) of kam-hi. two players to keep an eye on!
Jake Kackley. Awesome to see his name mentioned. He's my nephew. His brother Pi'i did well for Kamehameha - Hawai'i a few years back.
paawela, nephew caught my eye early! first one at the rim on offense and defense! plus,got handles and vision! nice dishes he hands out! with jace now in the picture, kam-hi. is THE team to go thru!
Mahalo Hoopwaiian. Will let him know to keep up the good work. Aloha.
@Hoopwaiian
I agree that Kam-HI is by far the most talented team in the league. However talent isn't everything in basketball and we will see how they mesh this year.
Also Shropshire is huge, but also has a very raw game and a lot to work on, skill wise, mentally, and physically. He is still young so I can see lots of room for improvement.
Kackley should be a nice complimentary piece on their team this year, it's hard for me to see him getting major minutes due to Kam's depth, especially since he didn't make a huge impact this past season. We will see though.
As for the east the two teams are St. Joes and Kam, with Waiakea close behind them.
d12, if i was coach, i.ll say it here; kackley would start for me. he,d get major minutes. here.s a possible line up; kackley(6'2), jace(6'4") cabatu(6'2")alapai(6'0 much improved!)apele at guard.i see alot of boards and speed here. lethal! thats just one possibility.
I would use Kagawa first to bolster my perimeter defense. With Naki and Shaun being great defenders that play bigger than their actual size, you can sit one of the bigs. Kackley is tall and long but will have trouble guarding the faster 2s in the BIIF. Also, by letting one of the bigs sit, Kamehameha would have a deeper and well rested bench top to bottom.
@hoopwaiian
Only problem with that is the chemistry wouldn't be very good in my opinion. All of those players are extremely shot heavy and ball dependent. I don't think that particular 5 on Kam's team would be able to mesh together well. In reality Apele and Carvalho should be the ones taking majority of the shots, just because they are the most reliable scorers, which I am not sure the others will understand that concept.
