Who do you think has a chance of getting player of the year. The season is young but lets make our predictions. I say Jacob Andrade from St. Joseph has a great chance. He is a leader for the young Cardinals and will always keep his team in the game.

Since there is an East side and West side Player of the Year.
East:
1st Choice - Scotty Wong (Hilo)= excepting his role as the best 6th man off the bench. He continues to play with heart and gives Hilo the boost they need to stay in games.2nd Choice - Jacob Andrade (St. Joe) = all around leader. If not hitting it offensively, digs down deep to play great defene.
*Staying away from Allen & Shintani just because the motives of their transfer. But, they will probably end up as 1st team on East side.
West Side:
1st Choice - Torn between Thomas Naehu (Kealakehe)& Brandon Bautista (Kohala) = both are athletic, heart of their teams. Awesome to watch them take over a game!Posted 2 years ago # -
oh and for the West I'm gonna say Brandon Bautista or Jake Vallente.
Posted 2 years ago # -
D1: Scotty Wong, plays the hardest on their team by far, gritty player, very active and athletic
D2: Thomas Fairman, he probably will be averaging 15 points, 15 boards, and 5 blocks a game...hard to compete with those numbers, and hes only getting better..he brings a lot to st. joes.
-----
west:
D1: Thomas Naehu, Honokaa's leader, big strong athletic forward, good from long range, and can get up and down the court.
D2: Brandon Bautista, his senior campaign has been a good one, he hasnt been surrounded with as much talent as he has been, but he manages to make his team mates better and keep them in games.

Naehu is for Kealakehe D1. There's not going to be a DI or DII Player of the year! Only one team for East and one team for West! Both DI and DII players will be in the mix. That's the way it went for Volleyball allstars!

Wow Scotty Wong thats pretty impressive for Scotty because he comes off the bench. Scotty is an awesome talent.
If I was to vote right now I would give Matt Libao the player of the year. He is runnig the Waiakea offense well, he's pretty much unstoppable 1 on 1 going to the hole(just too strong for the smaller guards), and his defense is solid. But, remember its early in the year and much can change. Congrats Waiakea for a hard fought victory!!! Hilo be proud you battled until the end!!!!

Speaking of Jacob Andrade, continue reading:
I just got through watching "one of the best High School games" ever....
KAM VS ST. JOE
It was "neck and neck" the entire way....until the fouls and the "breaks" went St. Joe's way in the very end.
It was funny, I can't pin point an "outstanding player on the Cardinals due to the fact that they we scratching and clawing for most the way points wise, they didn't look fluent at all offensively, alot of loose ball "put backs" not really a great shooting night for Sabe or Andrade until the end (couple 3's, which were off of loose ball pickups). But they did what they had to do to pull it out in OT and thats what makes champions, sometimes you gotta win ugly. Fairman did well, but for the most part he was "over-whelmed" by Kams 3 post players (especially Cabatu)...he muscled him for most of the night...then Carvalho and Alapai took there turns to pretty much make him a non-factor most of the way. Fairman can't shoot anything outside of 4 feet.
On the Kam side...after the game, it was like they won and very happy emotions with there performance. (being that they are very young)Taking the Cardinals to OT, Mentally, the young Kam Warriors were strong, crashing the boards (Cabatu - 11 rebs and Cavalho-14), to Fairmens - 8 at the most.
Kams only down fall was the fouling and the turnovers in the very end of OT (comes with youth)...I think they had almost 30 fouls total as well. The inside presence of Cavalho and Cabatu was great, both had 15 and 16 points respectively.
Kam should keep there heads up, next year (with everyone returning), they will have there banner year!Flopper of the night: OMG "JACOB ANDRADE" OMG!!!!!! You guys gotta see this kid in action, when he's "off" and the games close....Dad is "histarrical" as well!!!!!!
I have never seen a High school player make soooo many flops / fakes (falls on the ground and shakes like a fish at times!!!, when he's only hacked lightly on the arm), i'm serious,,, JACOB ANDRADE...wow, everyone in the crowd was in shock at the consistent flopping that this kid was doing (spectating kids were actually teasing him because of it during the game - calling him "Hollywood" ...and the refs were buying into it! His Dad (Eddie Andrade) was also screaming "begging" for fouls. (while standing on his feet)..he sits next to the mauka basket (it looked embarrassing to say the least. (pointing directly in the officials face) After the game, Mr. Andrade looked like the cardinals lost (what a disgusting look on this adults face!...I see where his son gets it from. It was so funny (the flops), people were actually laughing after a while...Great game!
Happy for Waiakea...I guess you can call it "Karma" regarding the 2 transfers to Hilo!!!!! Most of the people in the Civic heard about the game and applauded Waiakea...it seemed like there's not to many Hilo fans now-a-days??? I wonder why?

@BIGFAN
thanks for posting this for the 10th time, we all enjoy the excuses from kam. =]
you forgot to mention how kam had 3 intentional fouls, and threw elbows on multiple occassions.
Also how can st. joes drop? They won..no team ever dropped in any rankings because of close games..if this is this case then if kansas took Yale into double overtime then Kansas would drop out of the top 25? Wow, makes perfect sense...no game is measured on how close they are...teams are measures by wins...and st.joes has been doing that.

your right Obi!
But the Refs did let them play, more then normal and that was great!
Posted 2 years ago # -
I agree with brew here...Libao for Waiakea is unstoppable off the dribble, MVP possible honors, I think if he didn't foul out (which I heard he did), the game probably wouldn't be that close in the end!!!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
@BIGFAN
Yes, at least they let them play...was glad to see that it wasn't called too bad either way. sure there were some bad calls here and there, but thats expected.

LOL @ copying and pasting all that crap in like 3 different threads...lol...
Kam's guards stunk tonight....Both teams shot like crap...St. Joes more so given that they are known for their outside shooting...Kam really isn't a good outside shooting team...Kam plays terrible defense imo...They foul like every other play it seems..I know they are trying to play tough, aggressive D but you have to know the difference between that and straight up fouling...
Also Andrade didn't get shut down by anyone but himself...He's a streaky shooter and he missed a crap load of open shots tonight...I bet he missed at least 10 open shots that he usually makes...and then to top it off he was missing free throws...
Kam really hit the boards hard in the second half...Especially the 4th...Once the Cards started rebounding in the overtime they pulled away...
Kams big men played really good...I wasn't sold on them but tonight they showed that they are pretty darn good....
I thought Sebi carried the Cards in the 3rd and most of the 4th then Scanlan-Leite played excellent in end of regulation and overtime..I swear he always comes up with a big assist, steal or basket when they need it most....

@ obi,
Yeah, It's been a while since i've seen a game that "fluent" without whistles blowing at every possesion.
but, like you mentioned, they were some questionable "ticki-tac" fouls and non calls as well...but in this game like non-other, you have to take the good and the bad with those stripe dudes!!!!!

@ bibbyboy,
Yeah, come to think of it, I don't think Lanaki Apele scored "any points" ZERO. Kams (Andrade) did not score either...as well as Kagawa. They really did stink.
Kams big men (Carvalho & Cabatu) were very aggressive on the boards as well as points. The lived in the paint tonight (nothing outside).
But you have to hand it to St. Joe's coaching and scrappyness (when the shots weren't falling), they found a way!!!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
@BIGFAN Wow, Apele, Andrade, and Kagawa didn't score a bucket. How did that happen? If you told me before the game that would happen, I would of bet you a million bucks.
Posted 2 years ago # -
@brew
Really they just didn't get a whole lot of good looks. Andrade only took a couple of shots, 2 or 3 maybe, same goes for Kagawa, Apele struggled with his shot, and didn't get a whole lot of dribble penetration, that's where a lot of his game comes from, and st. joes did a good job of keeping him out of the middle.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks Obi!!!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yeah i don't really remember Adam Andrade shooting at all..he probably did but i can't remember...Kagawa either...Apele struggled most of the game...He had a couple of big assists in the fourth to keep them in the game but then in OT he seemed to struggle again...
Posted 2 years ago # -
@ brew,
Kams BIGS kept them in the game:
Carvalho 15 pts / 14 Rebs 7/8 FT's (shot 2 technical shots as well)
Cabatu 15 pts / 11 Rebs 1/3 FT's
Alapai 7 pts / 3 Rebs 2-2 FT's
Wong 6 pts / 3 RebsYeah, the Guards all struggled...but that just goes to show that they were guarded well from the St. Joe guards. Andrade hasn't found his shot yet from 3 land..and its true regarding what Obi said, Kagawa didn't have much looks as well and Apele was off tonight.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Wow pretty impressive for the Bigs. Too bad the guards didn't have even a so-so game. It might of been a different outcome.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yeah, it looked like Lanaki was taking it a bit hard, cause he didn't play up to par ( but i could be wrong).
He did do the little things like run the offense and bring the ball down the court with some pressure at times (which is "very" important) being that they don't have anyone behind him that could take the pressure "consistently"
Adam andrade even dribbled the ball off his leg at a crucial time, late in the game (while bringing the ball down)Posted 2 years ago # -
Who is their 2nd pt guard?
Posted 2 years ago # -
It looks like Jacob Kackley or Shaun Kagawa are Apele's back ups (Fresh and Soph, both 1st year Varsity)...the coach interchanges them.
Posted 2 years ago # -
They will both get better with more experience. Kam has had two tough games to start the season. Hopefully the coach allows both of them more playing time against some of the weaker teams to gain the much needed experience they need.

Exactly! Young playa's need love too!
