Following up on a previous blog, here's a list thrown out as the all-time Hilo High top five:

SG - Alan Tanabe (state runner-up)
PG - Shon Malani (state title, state player of year)
SF - Paul Lee (state title, state tourney MVP)
PF - Scotty Wong (biceps big as state!)
    C - Reed Sunahara (all-state player in 3 sports)

That's leaving off Bruce Ferreira, another multi-sport star; Jason Mandaquit, a state champ and state player of the Year; and Rene Sanchez, a super guard who went on to play at UH-Hilo. Those three would be the best all-time player at almost every other BIIF school.

That shows just how strong the Viking history is.

    How about Waiakea's all-time top 5?

    PG - John Kahana
    SG - Branden Kawazoe
    SF - Jaime Ahu
    PF - Kyle Bartholomew
    C - Glenn Kealoha

    or Laupahoehoe's:

    PG - Darren Cabral
    SG - Hisao Sato
    SF - Jason Cabral
    PF - Sol Malani
    C - Alika Maikui

    or Honokaa's:

    PG - Shane Bell
    SG - Cheyenne Meyer
    SF - Sy Frazier
    PF - Konrad Ross
    C - Kaniela Aiona

All of the BIIF schools had standout players over the years, but picking five is tough and it comes down to a person's own favorites/reasons.

    Hi-Low,

    Me
    Jay
    Renee
    Brandon Kauhi
    Aukai Wong

Would Like a chance to play against your first five. Set it up and bring some cash, and let them know don't try and use the Hilo press, because it won't work. Circles baby!!!!!!! Wouldn't have to shoot, jus avg. 20 assist with this team. Chahoooooo!!!!!!

Brew -- I like your team, too. But you've got to remember, there would be only one ball ... and you have some guys who loved to shoot it.

The other team would just have Sunahara and Lee rebound, have Scotty take care of the refs, and Shon get the ball to Alan and get out of the way.

I have to admit, you and Jason in the backcourt is pretty tough -- like a shorter-version Magic (that's you!) and a shorter-version Michael Cooper (Jason) deeing the heck out of those opposing guards. Plus, you have that I-kicked-your-butt smile that you held until the end of the game with your Vikings on top.

Man, what a game it would be.

Out of all these players mentioned above, there is only 2 players that stands out that dominated after graduating from high school........ Alan Tanabe and Rene Sanchez they were in a league of there own........ Mens League and tournaments in the Big Island and Oahu

Don't forget that Konrad Ross was one of the best. When he used to come back from pro ball in New Zealand he dominated the Big Islands' best.At 6-5 and 245 lbs Konrad could post up,hit mid range shots,or simply shoot nba range three pointers.Too bad he got in trouble with the law. What a waste.

Konrad did great but no comparison to ALAN AND RENE. Brothers Gang vs I Don't know in the early 80's was the best. Watching these 2 guys go at it was PRICELESS

96720 -- Okay, I'll go with Don Fernandez at forward, but he was more of a point forward than a guard. Don was a super player and could do everything ... plus his Chuck T. Converse shoes were the icing on the BIIF championship cake.

Another standout guard was Sean Francisco, who played with Estabilio on back-to-back BIIF title teams in the mid-1980s under coach Joe Mattos.

With Sean, there was only one speed -- warp speed!

No comparison,I disagree. At times Konrad was as dominant as Tanabe.I never got to see Rene play.Iplayed with Tanabe in hilo and he was the best scorer by far.Konrad was never around as much for people to see him consistently.

Brew, I'm old but not that old. Hi-low could answer those questions. I have a better chance naming the other 4 players that played along side you during each year of your high school years.

Brew -- Alan T. graduated in 1974 and the Vikings finished state runner-up under coach Al Manliguis. I believe they lost to Radford.

Alan T.'s teammates included 6-foot-5 Terry Huffman, who went on to play center for the NAIA Vulcans; and the athletic James Moniz, to name a couple.

Hopefully 96720 or someone else can fill out the starting line-up.

Coach Al felt poor officiating in the finals cost Hilo the state title.

Alan T. went on to play his freshman year at UH-Hilo and lit up nationally ranked UNLV for 31 points in a 164-111 loss to the Runnin Rebels. The game ball was shipped to the Basketball Hall of Fame because at that point in time, that was the highest scoring game ever. There were no 3-pointers during that era.

Alan T. then left UHH and later attended Hawaii Pacific University, where he was the team's leading scorer and finished his career as the school's all-time leading scorer.

Once returning to Hilo, he ripped up the men's leagues while becoming a legend in local hoops. He continued to play men's leagues until he turned 40, and then took up tennis. As expected, the highly competitive Tanabe became an outstanding tennis player.

Rumors have been flying the past couple of years that Tanabe might come back and play in the men's leagues. And if it happens, you can be sure that he'll still average over 20 ppg. You just don't see many 50-year-old guys playing in the 30 & over leagues and remain dominant players.

Thanks Hi-Low, awesome post on Alan. I only know Alan from battling against him in the mens league, so it was great to hear about his accomplishments in high school and college.

Sean Francisco was one of my favorite players to watch, he was intense and like Hi-Low said, "warp speed".
