Brew -- Alan T. graduated in 1974 and the Vikings finished state runner-up under coach Al Manliguis. I believe they lost to Radford.
Alan T.'s teammates included 6-foot-5 Terry Huffman, who went on to play center for the NAIA Vulcans; and the athletic James Moniz, to name a couple.
Hopefully 96720 or someone else can fill out the starting line-up.
Coach Al felt poor officiating in the finals cost Hilo the state title.
Alan T. went on to play his freshman year at UH-Hilo and lit up nationally ranked UNLV for 31 points in a 164-111 loss to the Runnin Rebels. The game ball was shipped to the Basketball Hall of Fame because at that point in time, that was the highest scoring game ever. There were no 3-pointers during that era.
Alan T. then left UHH and later attended Hawaii Pacific University, where he was the team's leading scorer and finished his career as the school's all-time leading scorer.
Once returning to Hilo, he ripped up the men's leagues while becoming a legend in local hoops. He continued to play men's leagues until he turned 40, and then took up tennis. As expected, the highly competitive Tanabe became an outstanding tennis player.
Rumors have been flying the past couple of years that Tanabe might come back and play in the men's leagues. And if it happens, you can be sure that he'll still average over 20 ppg. You just don't see many 50-year-old guys playing in the 30 & over leagues and remain dominant players.
