Who do you think is the girls MVP in the BIIF? A lot can be said about Waiakeas Imai and Bello, and Hilos Vicky but if you really was to follow the BIIF, the real MVP is Keaau's Rayleen Naki. A real MVP does it on both ends of the floor and Rayleen has proven herself many different times shuting down top players and still scoring double digit points. She's playing on a team that doesn't recruit or needs all star players to win. If Keaau gets at least a state berth... Rayleen Naki should be BIIF's MVP!

bigballa, does that girl (Naki) live at her coach's house? I was just wondering.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Nah, that kind of stuff only happens at Kona, you know the dirtiest program in America! Well, that is a little extreme, only Hawaii and possibly all of America......

Bigballa, I agree with you about Naki. If she is able to lead her team to a state berth, she should win the MVP, and her coach should win coach of the year. Not to take anything away from Konawaena, but they are stacked. If Keaau doesn't win than I believe someone from Kona should get the MVP, maybe Kara Hanato-Smith. Waiakea, has had an up and down year, but they seem to be pulling it together at the right time, and if they do get one of the two state berths, then Kanisha Bello or the Imai girl should receive some consideration.
My 1st team All BIIF
Kara Hanato-Smith
Dawnyelle Awa
Lia Galdeira
Kanisha Bello
Kamie Imai
Rayleen NakiPlayer of the Year up for grabs!!!

My 1st Team ALL BIIF
1-The Kona coach who lets players live at their house
2-The Kona coach who pays for her bills and living expenses
3-The Kona coach who pays for her food
4-The Kona coach who washes her clothes
5-The Kona coach who helps her with her homework.Posted 3 years ago # -
Naki will not be MVP in the BIIF. It has to come from Kona. They ran the table on the BIIFs.. But If u take away one player from Kona, They would still probably win the BIIF.
Who is most Valuable to there team?? I would probably say AWA... She keeps that team together. Plus its there only ball handler..
Naki is very important to her team, but for someone who cant dribble with there left hand.. NO
Kamie and Kanisha is what keeps Waiakea together. They both should receive some consideration..Kamie is having a down year(In her Eyes) and Kanisha is the best shooter in the BIIFS
But in MY Opinion... It will come from Kona... AWA will win it.1ST TEAM
1.Awa
2.Hanato-Smith
3.Imai
4.Bello
5.Naki
6.GalderiaMVP-AWA
Coach of the Year- Kawaha(Keaau) He got them to play true team basketballPosted 3 years ago # -
kona is jus a solid team period. there were no individuals with them. i don't think there should be a MVP from kona (but it might happen) maybe a team award, but not a BIIF MVP. That Naki girl could be the real runner for the award. I've seen her play at the Waiakea and Hilo game. Very tough and active.
she's done her share of scoring and holding the opponents best player down.
On friday against Waiakea if she holds her own and leads Keaa'u to a state berth, hands down she should be the BIIF MVP.
On a ending note you voters should look at the all-around performance of a player and not what other people say. there are girls that can shoot, others that rebound, and some play defense but not to many can do it all. Jus think and watch.Posted 3 years ago # -
BIIFsupporter it seems as if you not only watch the game, but you see what the individual is doing for their team. Naki does everything for her team, she scores, plays defense on the opposing teams best player, rebounds, and hustles at all times. I agree if they beat Waiakea, she should be the BIIF MVP.
BIIFFan, it seems that your not choosing Naki because she can't dribble that well with her left hand (kine of strange to base your choice on the ability to dribble with her left). 2 questions, 1) If she could dribble with her left hand would you then choose her as your MVP? Question 2) Choose a player - player 1 -- 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and great hustle and leadership or player 2-- 3 points , 2 rebounds, 0 assist, 1 steal, no hustle, 5 turnovers, but can dribble like skip to my Lou with their left hand? If I'm reading you right you would choose player number 2.

Naki is a good player but her team is not as great as her so she looks even greater. Kona has a well rounded team and you can't choose a MVP. Waiakea has has nice well rounded team also, they all stand out. Hilo is the same. Keaau plays very poor and their comments to Kona was not nice the other night. As a fan I was shocked to see girls calling other girls these words. No respect for the team that has more exp and game. Learning from the better team is what you should be doing.

Damn, Kona should be the best team and have the best players in the BIIF. Look at how they get them.

Awa ----- BIIF player of the year. Like BIIFFan said Kona runs the table, and she has been playing the most consistant.
First Team
Awa --- Player of the year
PG Hanato-Smith
SG Bello
SF Imai
PF Galdeira
C WallPosted 3 years ago # -
My 2 cents on Brew's First Team.
Awa-POY, Consistent, creative, true play maker.
Hanato-Smith, Fearless, well trained, great court vision.
Bello, experienced, solid, confident.
Imai, true athlete, great hops, good anticipation.
Galdeira, crazy skills, hops like a boy, young.
Wall, big, strong, good rebounder. It is nice to see the tides turning in the the BIIF. A good number of dominant key players are underclassmen. I would imagine that this is all due in part to the offseason training that these girls are doing. Our island is loaded talented, multi-sport atheletes. Do Oahu girls mostly stick to one sport, or are they like us?

Grasshack, good post!!
I think the Big Island has one of the best freshmen classes in the state for both boys and girls. I give credit and thanks to all the youth coaches for working so hard with these players.
Just my opinion --
Best male freshmen - John Ursua (Kealakehe), also may be the best freshmen athlete in the state.
Best female freshmen - Dawnyelle Awa
Any other opinions around the state. It would be fun to hear about the up and coming players from other islands.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I watched the Ursua kid play for Kealakehe against Farrington in the state tournament for football and he was impressive. He played wide receiver while his brother played quarterback. I'm looking forward to bigger and better things from him in the future.
As for Oahu, I would say Kylie Maeda from Iolani is the top freshman in the state for girls and either Malik Johnson or DeForrest Buckner from Punahou for the boys.

4fun- who is wall? i never heard of that player in the BIIF. i'm hoping shes good to be mentioned on the top players.
by the way how'd u "see" keaau players "say" inappropriate things about kona players.
from my experience the players leave everything on the court, so fans don't bring it out.Posted 3 years ago # -
To Benchwarmer: If she could dribble with her left, she would be in a class with Returning MVP's Kamie and Kanisha along with Awa and Galderia.
And answer to your question, Of course i would choose the person with better stats. But u are talking about MVP.. and she is not there yet..
Let me ask you this... If you could pick any player in this league based on there performance this year, to be on your team... Who would you pick first?? Would it be Naki??? I think not....
Posted 3 years ago # -
I watched Naki play and she can go left. But for me, why does she have to go left if the defense can stop her from going right in the first place. All these canidates are good but only on offense. Only Naki has that shut down defense to man up on anyone. She held Imai to 5 points their last game... if Bello was to play against Imai..Bello would get eatin up!
I also been watching Waiakea play, and from what i hear and see, all their plays are only made for Imai and Bello. Anyone can be up for MVP if all plays are run for them. I doubt it if the other teams do that. The rest of the teams usually have a team effort in scoring. I feel bad for the rest of the girls on Waiakeas team whos job is to only pass the ball to Imai and Bello!
Kona has too much girls that are good. They play as a team so its hard to say whos most valuable.

Kona has the best team due to their incentives, you know, possibly free plate lunches, gift cards to the mall, clothes, snacks, whatevers....

Kona has the best team with Ms. Lia or w/o Ms. Lia. All do respect Ms. Lia is a great ball player and potential to be one of the best coming out of Hawaii. She still needs to learn to lead the team. I think she will run the court when she is Senior Lia needs time to mature. Hanato Smith is inspiring. She runs her team and keeps them up at all times. Awa is still too young to know how to keep her team intact. Awa will also mature into a great player. Thea Hanato Smith is another young player to keep you eyes on..she is super fast and great with her shots and rebounds. I think the MVP should go to Kara Hanato Smith, she has come a long way and played since she was a little girl. She has a record of traveling and game. Naki, I'm sorry you are a great individual player but again, did you not even see what your team girls were saying on the court againts the Kona girls, inappropriate language was not necessary. A team leader will not allow her co-team members to present poor sportsmanship. And everyone get over Konawaena Girls getting perks if they are, you don't know how super hard some of these parents and girls work for their rewards. I'm not a kona fan but I love the way they play!!! that is awesome basketball this year. The Kona jv..some girls is another story..they need to learn from the Varsity. We are here to watch a team perform and bring it for HAWAII!!! Good luck to all Kona, Hilo, Waiakea, Keaau...may the bestest team take to Oahu for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4fun- I agree. Lia is good, but she does not carry that team. She and Awa are young and still very immature...which is expected, considering they are only 14. They will only get better, on and off the court. Kona's team is very well rounded. They have good ball handlers and a few big girls who can pound inside. I have seem a few of their games and Wall, who is spoken about in a post above, did not start any of those games. I saw her match up with Imai and Wall shut her down. Hanato-Smith, both of them, seem solid and dependable ball handlers. Ulopa is another big girl who is very agile and can run the floor and finishes well. Kona seems to be infatuated with the basics and it's nice to see them do well. So many teams out there are one man shows with lots of fancy shots and minimal patience. Kona seems to do well under pressure and that is all due to experience and trust-and less to do with raw talent. These freshman are talented, and if it was one on one, they would win the gold, but Kona seems to get the whole "team ball" thing. I wish more coaches would emphasize the value of the 4 girls without the ball. Kona may be getting into the gray area by housing a student athlete, but the program would appear to do fine without Lia. THERE IS NO I IN TEAM. Good luck to all in the BIIF finals and at states.

Well, If you watch last nights game.. Lia did very well going aganist Vicky. I know Vicky is not what she was 2 years ago but Lia played very well. Her up side has no limits..
As for Naki.. she didnt play one of her best games but she played good defense to keep her team in the game
As for Kamie.. She didnt do as well on offense, But she cleaned house on the boards with 14.. She also had 6 points with a couple blocks and steals..
Posted 3 years ago # -
Vicky lacks explosion which should be expected due to her sever injury. Also, she also lacks the same confidence. That is also expected due to the same injury. Sports psychologist suggest that 2 years is a good timetable to get your mind and body right.
With that said, while many of you are saying that with or without Galdeira, Kona would still win, that is a big IF!
IF Galdeira attended Hilo, and Vicky slowly comes back week in and week out, that would be a far different scenario. That would give Hilo another scorer which they don't have. And that would take away one scorer away from Kona. Plus Kona does not go deep.

I have heard over the past how Kona can't do this and can't do that due to able bodies. I totally disagree with this. No one is forcing them to have a JV team. They can easily eliminate the JV team and have 10 able bodies on varsity.
If you look at the Kona program, the impact players never play JV, so that program is pretty moot.
The problem is that Kona is more interested in blowing out teams and keeping their starters in versus investing in the role/younger players. What is the difference between winning by 40 or 10?
With the kind of athleticism they have, they should be trapping, pressing, and running offenses that are not outdated.
If Kona spent more time developing the role and second tier players, and invested in a more innovative offense, no one (Punahou included), would touch them based on physical talent and basketball skill set.
If you look at their offense, it's the same methodical, have to make no reads, type of offense. This is good for youth leagues or players that will max out at the high school level.
I have read on here that Galderia went to Kona to prepare her for college. Well, let's see it. Let's see a college type offense being run? Let's see some defensive pressure that will prepare her for college?
All of their sets are predicated on the pass. With the kind of bodies that Kona possess, let's see dribble penetration sets.
If you look at Carolina, Memphis, UConn, they have adapted their offense to take advantage of their length or quickness.
Menphis had Derrick Rose and their sets rarely started off with a pass. Lawson usually uses his quickness to beat his man off the dribble to initiate offense or get into the lane for mismatches.
Their offenses are based on read. Each offensive players must see how the point defender plays the point and how the help comes after the initial defender is beaten. Then the offensive players must make reads based off that.
This is high level basketball. If the goal is to be excellent and get the kids (Galderia and Awa) into a legitimate division I program, why is this not being done? Awa and Galderia are not being utilized properly. They are winning games and increasing their statistics since they are better players.
But are they increasing their skill-set, basketball IQ, and preparing themselves for collge? My answer is no.
I wonder if the staff attends coaching clinics, reads books, watched instructional video, breaks down college practices and games?
There are many colleges (Duke, Kansas, UNC, etc.) that are willing to either open their practices to the public or sometimes send DVD's of their practices to high schools.
I wonder if the coaches are utilizing this or are they satisfied being complacent blowing out terrible teams.
Should the goal be to blow out teams that are mismatched, or should the goal be to prepare the girls for a higher level college program?
Instead of blowing out teams, Kona should look at investing in their second-tier players to deepen their rotation so they can increase their defensive play and schemes. They should CHALLENGE themselves by using a innovative offense that makes the girls think at a higher level and increase their basketball IQ.
The purpose of coaching is to challenge yourself and get the players to the highest level possible, not ringing up inferior teams by 30 or 40.
Kona wins because they have superior talent. If they are truly great coaches, they would bring their level of thinking into the quadrant D area......

Just something to throw out there should a player be awarded top honors and be recognized as a role model of the sport if she gets into a serious altercation at the playoffs in uniform after the game even though the stats are good? And D.Awa is a great player.
Posted 3 years ago # -
While kids can often be a role model for younger players at the school and in the community, kids will get second, third, fourth chances, etc.
They are awarded these chances since they are still kids. Our society legally recognizes adults at the age of 18.
While some kids are still not mature at 18 and some are mature at at a younger age, this is the legally recognized age of an adult.
As for your statement, that would be the decision of the voters/coaches/etc.
There can be an argument for both sides. I guess it depends how severe the altercation was.
