Actually, my source is pretty credible. He's either going to Kaimuki or to Moanalua.

I just cannot believe everything that I read.

Why would he leave Kalaheo and Coach Furtado?!
He is established at the "Blue and Orange" and has earned total respect by his peers and teammates.

Good basketball coaches in Kelly and Tacon.
Both schools should be talented OIA contenders.
Throwing in Fernandez won't get these two teams an automatic OIA championship!

The OIA's road to the championship will have to go through Kahuku!
Kahuku is athletic and huge which is why I believe that the "Big Red Machine" should repeat as OIA champions in 2010!

To bad for Kalaheo, if Fernandez stays "Loyal" then Coach Furtado could very well have a good shot at an OIA run as well.

Coach Furtado is one hell of a motivator and gets the most out of his players.

    eh Pinoy!

Furatado is will not be coaching kalaheo next year, they could still contend but without Coach Chico at the helm I see Kalaheo in a rebuilding year around the makaula kid. Fernadez is a decent guard with good range, and wherever he goes they'll be lucky.

    Good day manong shooter!

No Coach Furtado, I suess, I like dat one!

    LOL!

I heard that rumor, hoped that it was just a rumor.

Coach Marciel will have a solid young (Jr.) athlete in Kona Makaula.
Kona will be playing football which means that they will not get Kona onto the court until after football finishes.

After that said, losing Fernandez will create a huge void in the Mustangs lineup.

Blogger JM (Kalaheo's summer intern), any truth to all of this mumbo jumbo?!
Check it out JM, and get back to us please.

Jones, how about jumping on your cell, I know you have all 3 coaches phone numbers.
Give them a ring Jones! "You can do it!"

Wow! Is this a fact? Can someone confirm that Wally is at Kalaheo? BBJ, is this true? Wally was an excellent asst coach back in the Pete Smith era and is very respected and loved by the Kailua community.

Howzit Pinoy! I just played golf with Coach Marciel a couple of days ago...boy, can that brotha bang the hell out of a golf ball!!!

Coach Marciel sounds really excited to be back on the court again. He is also excited to have the Hawaii Select club team back in action again after a number of years out of commission.

When does Coach Furtado retire? Only Coach Furtado knows. But when that time comes, Coach Marciel will be a more than capable replacement.

Apologies for the semi-tardy response. Was at UH all day and then headed out to Kalaheo without stopping off at home.

Since BBJ has already chimed in, I'll deliver what I know. At the same time, out of respect for all parties involved, I'd also like to try and answer specifically the questions asked/mentioned.

First, Fernandez and his whereabouts. I doubt it will be Kalaheo. I haven't heard anything about Moanalua, but I am also not 100% sure if it's Kaimuki. ie.. I have not heard, nor been told he is going to x school. If I had to guess I'd say not Kalaheo. Possibly Kaimuki, unsure about Moanalua rumors.

BBJ, I believe he was involved with HS, so if you want to poke around with Mr. Marciel I'm sure you can find out the specifics.

Yes, Mr. Marciel is back coaching again. He has the reigns with HS and is stepping in to head coach the boys this summer.

The Makaula comments are worthy. Depending on how much you value my opinion, I would say that minus Fernandez, he is the most well rounded kid on the roster at this point in time. He has tremendous work ethic, good leadership skills, listens well and has a high basketball IQ. He's a good kid to be around on and off the court.

The Marciel comments are also warranted. Mr. Marciel is very passionate, versed and prepared during each and every practice. You can definitely see how hungry he is to get his hands dirty again. With my limited knowledge I would also have to decidedly agree. When the time comes and Mr. Furtado chooses to step down, Mr. Marciel will do a fantastic job.

I'm enjoying myself very much while working with them this summer. It's been a great opportunity for me to learn.

Edit: The comment about Furtado's motivational skills are also valid. He does an exceptional job of bridging the communication/age gap through humor, life knowledge and passion for the game. It's definitely a unique quality that he possesses.

    Howzit Braddah JM.
    I have some friendly advice.
Kalaheo may want to look at incoming freshman Reeves Kolher this summer.
This "Basketball Gaint" is a solid 6'3" incoming freshman (still growing quickly) that is strong as an ox and determined as a bull, honestly.
He has a pretty good lowpost dropstep to go with all those rebounds he'll be cleaning off the glass for the "Blue and Orange!"
Reeves Kolher, you'll be thanking me later Braddah!
Kona Makaula will be thanking you as well!

    @2Dhoop

Thanks for the heads up. I'll let Mr. Marciel know the next time I see him. Would you happen to have any contact info?

Although the roster is a healthy 14 players at the moment I'm sure this "Basketball Giant" would be able to improve his game playing with us this summer. As previously mentioned I'll try to see if I can get the two parties in contact. Thank you again!

Bad news and good news JM,

Good news first, Reeves Kolher will be a Crusader!

Bad news, Reeves Kolher will be a Crusader! Sorry JM.

I was speaking to St Louis Summer Asst Coach Dean Veina (Run N Gun) and he had mentioned that Reeves Kolher has enrolled and was excepted to St. Louis.

Also spoke to Kalaheo Asst Coach Marciel (Hi Select) and I am very impressed with his enthusiasm and motivated spirit to go along with his extensive knowledge of the game of basketball!

Wally Marciel will be an excellent addition to the Mustang coaching staff.

My son is friends with the Fernandez kid and my son is telling me that he is transferring to kaimuki. Also he is not even playing summer league with Kalaheo, so he has to be playing with someone who is it?

Heard it from the Kalaheo grapevine.

Seems to be no big secret at the blue and orange.

Fernandez will wear the green and yellow.

Kalaheo has deep tradition, always been a contender.
With the Kailua community shrinking, turning into a retirement community and with students attending private school, the talent has been shrinking. Coach Chico has done a great job but with the lack of talent for next years team, maybe that is why Fernandez is leaving.
