Someone call 911 quick. Punahou was mobbed! Moanalua got jacked! I saw the perps. Matter of fact, I think there were lots of witnesses too. I can describe each and every one of them. They all were wearing black and white striped shirts, black pants and black shoes. Another thing, almost all of them have rabbit ears because they can hear everything that the crowd is yelling at them!

They look like some sort of neighborhood gang wearing their gangster colors, which I guess is black and white. Do not approach these perps as they are armed with whistles and may blow your ear drums out. Although, if you are from one certain school which I will not say but the first part of the school's name starts with a K and the last part ends with amehameha, then its fine to approach these perps.

These perps are known to frequent basketball games and pick on unsuspecting innocent kids. If you see these individuals, do not approach. Instead, please call and report them to the local authorities.

After reading Fanatic's post I went and checked on last night's box scores from the Kamehameha/Punahou game. One glaring statistic stood out.

    Free throws:
    Kamehameha 16/23
    Punahou 0/2

    Total fouls:
    Kamehameha 7
    Punahou 20

One team shot 23 free throws while the other only went to the line twice. I believe those two free throws came in the second half as well. Personally, I thought that the game was very physical on the inside for both teams but I don't know why there is such a huge disparity in the free throw department. Kamehameha was whistled for 7 fouls the whole game. The whole game. Seven. Siete. Shichi. Ehiku. 7.

Big disparity. Referees deciding games. Buckner with his size and talent, would be better off playing on the mainland. With his style of play, the Hawaii refs will hurt him.

Is Fanatic Hoop one of the refs?

I'm all for Kamehameha to repeat this year but the calls/no calls last night was something else. One ref only made calls against Punahou. He called a charge on Punahou but was overturned by another ref. The same ref called over the back on Buckner when he jumped straight up snatched a rebound over a Kamehameha player. The free throw disparity at half time was 19-Kamehameha 0-Punahou. Wow!!!!

Coach Todd Apo (thats what I know him as), if you have the game recorded watch it and see how many calls the Morales ref made against Punahou compared to Kamehameha.

    This is so funny!

I admire the Kamehameha kids a lot. I feel they have the less talent than Iolani, Punahou, and Moanalua. But they continue to achieve and persevere. Let's give the kids some credit! But the refs are very subjective when it comes to the alma mater.

I have seen three games. The Campbell game was called pretty well since Kamehameha was in control all game. In the Moanalua game the little point guard was fouled hard in the end of regulation by Bajet with no call. The fouls in OT were quite one-sided.

Last night the center for Punahou was getting mauled. He was hit, slapped, and almost assaulted.

I'm all for Kamehameha, but we need refs who will have the courage to make the right call and create a consistent playing environment which will protect the integrity of the game.

Hold on, you gotta remember Punahou was up 12-4 at one point just like Moanalua was up 7 at one point against Kamehameha. Why because they were both attacking the rack. Suddenly both teams get lax and then become tentative. Kamehameha then turns it around and becomes the agressor taking it to the rack. Punahou starts making turnovers without getting shots off, they could not even make entry passes to the post where you have 6'7" and 6'5" posts. You cannot shoot free throws if you don't attack the rim and try to finesse it. Both teams had their chances and again the Warriors prevailed. Hats off to the two teams left standing. The winner deserves the championship.

23-2 freethrows? I'm sorry but that's absurd. Calls that stood out in my mind: Over the back on Buckner, 3 point play Christensen got on a Buckner blocking foul that was definitely either a charge or a no call (Morales called it of course) and Christensen's tip in at the 3rd quarter buzzer looked pretty late to me. Oh and of course Johnson's layup at the end. Christensen is a great player, but he sure does get away with his share of fouls. He knows exactly how to work the referees to get what he wants, which is part of what makes him good I guess. Puns were pretty classy after the game despite being robbed in my opinion, which impressed me when I knew how badly those boys wanted it. Good season Puns, good luck Kamehameha/Iolani tonight! Hope its a close one.

Good morning Tiger! Great point about Punahou's display of class. I thought Coach Alika showed a lot of that in his interview with the papers today. He didn't complain about bad calls, merely, he talked about the chances that they had in tying or winning the game in the end. Impressive.

Blaming the refs is a cop out, because if Punahou won there would be no complaints. Since they lost now everyone looks for something which usually turns out to be the refs. Bad calls or not, Punahou had control of the game and let it slip away. The key to the game was super-sub Frank Ho scoring all his 11 pts. in the 2nd quarter which gave Kamehameha the lift it needed as well as the momentum which they sustained till the end in winning the game. There was a lot of times late in the game where Punahou should have got rebounds but were outhustled by the smaller Warriors. No excuses when you win, only when you lose. On this night the Warriors were better, end of story.

I will never take away anything from the kids they played hard and in no way shape or form could or have controlled how the refs called the two games that they won against Moanalua and Punahou, both teams had leads in the final minutes you are right, but you are really nieve to believe that the refs didn't control the out come of both games... if Moan gets the call at the end of regulation they win because the freshman was 6 of six from the line and only needed to make one to clinch the game, in the second overtime Racom was fouled going to the basket if he gets the call we could have aleast went into a 3 overtime, if you think that i'm blowing smoke up your tail watch the games on TV for youself

listen heres my beef i feel that if your almamatter is playing you just cant be bias. This should be prohibited for an official to call a game for his school. Duh? Or family member associated with the team be it player, coach, neighbor or co-worker. I've seen the buddy buddy crap going on before the game between coach and ref, player and ref. I think we have enough of these guys that we can find some true neutrality.

The refs were not only terrible in those games but also in the Seabury Hall games. 23 free throws for AOP to 7; St. Joe shot 40 times from the charity; four guys fouled out from a team that is not very aggressive.

Christenson gets the ultimate superstar treatment! It was evident against Moanalua, it was evident against Punahou, and it was even evident against 'Iolani last night. If there is a foul where it is either Christenson or another player, it will be called on the other player 100% of the time. The rare occurrence that he does not receive the benefit of the call, he is immediately pleading his case to the referee, who then reinforces the preferential treatment once again. As a fan, I like watching Christenson play, but the measures taken by the referees to keep him in the game are a bit excessive.

Does anyone know if there is a formal way of calling into question the refereeing in a game? Can anyone protest?

Who does it go to? And how do they handle it?

I am sure there is but I don't think it will do any good. I could have tried to protest our game with Pahoa after what the BIIF official said to me, but why bother. we got beat and that was the bottom line. As bad as the officiating can be, I know as a coach that our team has got to be that much better so that the officials can't have anything to do with the outcome. I know that there were some games at the state tourney that are in question and that the results might have turned out different with different officials, but it is over now and we can't do anything about it. Let Pahoa and Iolani enjoy thier titles. I am not trying to start an argument with any of you about this because I bitch at officials more than anybody,(now that Chico is retired. haha. I only say that because he is a friend.) You just have to find a way to overcome the officiating, something that I had to tell my team quite a lot this year. But it's part of the game and really, it is never going to change. Take care all and great season to everyone.

Thanks, coach and I take your points.

I'm not talking about changing the game outcome,or how one can go about managing the players disappointment. You guys do that, and do it as well as you can, and hopefully that helps the kids deal with bigger issues in life.

It's about asking for information, information about refs and their competency...no, not competency, about their fairness. Who's in charge of them. And, missing calls unintentionally or being ignorant of the rules ain't my question here. It's about what happens if someone believes, and can prove - show evidence - a ref did not apply a rule, or applied it inconsistantly. Consistently.

Who do they go to? What do they say? What happens after they say what they say?

Again, those teams should enjoy their titles, as should the runner ups. And I agree it was a great tournament. And I'm past bitching and not into arguing. But I'm searching for information, a bit deeper than a simple WTF.

I understand Pnut. To tell you the truth, I am not sure that anything happens. They just talk to them and we are told they will work to make sure it doesn't happen again. I know that the OIA had some improvement in refs this year thanks to the rating system that we had. They should have something like this at the state tourney. I don't know how much good it will do since once the games are played we can't do anything about them. But hopefully they will get it fixed. The one thing I hope they change, is that if you have 1 ref from the league of 1 of the teams playing, you should have 1 from the other team's league as well. And the 3rd one should be from a neutral league. Or they should all be from a neutral league. Just something to think about.

Coach, you got it. Thanks for the context.

By coincidence, I met an NCAA ref the day after the semis, and he volunteered what his experience of watching the refs on OC-16 was, and it wasn't satisfactory.

So I asked how often this happens, and then what, etc. He says there is a process and there is feedback. Or should be.
To be sure, what should be and what is...two different things.

So that's where I was going with this...who and what. All in the spirit of making sure the public has confidence in the game and the officiating, I asked the question.

And I understand that that it's hard for the coach to complain to the powers that be. Maybe even the AD. True?

And if not them, who? The principal?

    (probably the ref's mothers, lol)
