I totally agree with this pick. I think Cassiday is the best on ball defender in the state hands down. I have seen him guard all 5 positions this year. He can guard on the perimeter against smaller guards. He can slide down to the post to guard bigger players. He rebounds, contests shots, and is usually in good defensive position on or off the ball.

He did a nice job at times against 2 of the best players in the state in Christenson and Chu, which is extremely difficult to do.

I think talent wise, he is top 5-7 in the state. But, he was injured during the season, and he missed a lot of preseason. Punahou was a far different team when he wasn't playing.

Good job to Henry and the rest of the boys. I would like to have seen Skalman on that list.

yo hoop you seem to be the man. Will the puns make any coaching changes with boys basketball this next season? Did your boy Keakoa enjoy vars or would he like his own team? what about Akina will he be back at inter1? Aloha

Kekoa just enjoys helping people and kids. He is the kind of person who can adapt, whether it be as a head or an assistant.

I heard that Coach Kowen is moving to the mainland so there may be an opening at Int I. Also, I heard that Coach Akina may not be coming back to Inter 1.

I am pretty sure there may be openings at Int 1, 2, and JV 2.

Ask Jones, he knows everything since he gets his information in-house.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Punahou Alum from Portland is the new Int 1 coach next year, while former Vars I head coach Alan Lum could possibly the next Int 2 coach.

@ Ed, I agree that Skalman should have been on that list. He plays tenecious d and has a fiery attitude great for defensive intensity.

    Yo Ed,
inquiring minds want to know, now that your son is moving on to bigger and brighter things...will you be coaching basketball again? and dont you have a younger son? is he old enough to play?

    Skalman gobbles up opposing guards.

Not surrised about Tulonghari in a close vote for Defensive POY. As much of a lock down defender that he is, his real strength is away from the hardwood. You should see the full court pressure he gives wahines. Relentless. RELENTLESS!

Good job Henry and the rest of the All-Defensive Team! Most people don't know this but Trevyn, Micah and Henry were teammates on the 2003 NJB National Championship team.

I also would have liked to see Skalman on this list as well.

As far as information regarding Punahou, no ones nose is farther up the Puns ass than HF. You have to ask him.

    I make 0 dinero.

I think there is always a lot of shuffling everywhere since the pay isn't much, people have to work more due to poor ecnonomy, and often parents are not happy. A lot is expected of coaches. Even though many get paid, it's more of a volunteer gig. But, there are so many reasons why coaches move on.

In the past 10-15 years, Iolani had the longest tenure before Doc retired.

Which coach has the longest tenure at the same school? Harrison at Kailua, Spencer at Leilehua, and Villarmia of Pearl City come to mind. Any others?

@ Beanboy, Ed is a referee. Due to his keen vision, the HHSAA allows him to referee from the stands wherever he feels has the most appropriate vantage point.

    Just kidding Beanboy.

I help the older boys in the outside leagues and will help my younger boy if he wants to pursue playing basketball for his school.

    Wow, look alike, eh?

Would the Baldwin basketball coach be up there as far as coaching years at one school?

Ed has much better genes than I do. You can look at his two boys as evidence. Plus his lder boy is an extrordinary athlete. I believe his younger one will be the same.

As for my genes, my father was an All-State player for McKinely, and got a full ride to Oregon State. But obviously, it skipped a generation as Coach Lum, Mac, or Mello will attest to.

Jones that is probably correct. Unfortunately, I have barely any idea about neighbor island coaches. But after thinking, he may be the senior coach of Hawaii.

I think Spencer started at Leilehua around 1999 or 2000. Harrison started in the early 2000's as well as Villarmia. I am not exactly sure.

How is Marcus Monroe on this team? the coaches must not even have cared who was on this, just looked at the names and voted. He got blocks, but one on one, he cant stop any decent player. He just wants the ball back to shoot(not that i think he is a bad player) he just plays next to no defense.
