    Iolani looks strong again.

Vega: a tall and mobile scorer and shotblocker at the 5

Sheer: a man amongst boys, a powerful scorer and rebounder at the 4

Saito: a good scorer at the 2, a tough perimeter defender and the back-up PG

Tulongahri: is a natural 3 who is a great presure defender at any position and their leading scorer

Simmons: floor leader and reigning MVP of the Top 40 clinic on Maui

Ching: Long range sharpshooter and precision passer who plays 2 or 3

O'Leary: another long range sharpshooter who can swing from 2 to 3

Add the Junior from Kauai who was playing for the sharks this summer, a good post player with shooting range and an above average rebounder.

Kamehameha returns a solid core of hustlers and Punahou has it's talented players or this could be a repeat for Iolani.

    @Brian

Punahou seems to have all the talent in the world, along with size, and extremely gifted athletes both physically and skill wise. Why do you think they have only gotten 1 state title in the past 7 years or so? Even in this past summer league they had about 5 or 6 kids all 6'5" and up and they still seemed to fall short against an undersized Kapalama or a very thin Raiders team. Any thoughts? Not bashing them or anything, just wondering what others think is their problem when they seem to have all the right pieces year in and year out.

    @ D12

Ed may have a point. I can't say for sure without being at their practice but it does seem that something is missing. Granted, the bigs were only sophomores but they have played against higher levels of competition on the mainland.

Maybe distractions outside of the court, focus or intensity at practice? Who knows for sure?

Kamehameha does not match up with Punahou very well but Punahou cannot match up with Kamehameha either. We saw what happened last season in the semi-finals. Iolani does match up with Punahou's bigs with the addition of the Kauai player. Can Iolani catch up to Kamehameha's guards without Skalman and Chu? A lot of responsibility will be placed on Saito and Foy (Sorry to have left out another PG for Iolani above)if Simmons gets into foul trouble.

Unless some great skilled guard comes to their door, Punahou will struggle guarding Iolani and Kamehameha if they fall behind early. Not saying Punahou has limited guards, just not at the levels of the before mentioned. They do shoot well but can they handle ball pressure from Iolani or Kamehameha?

This will be a fun season for ILH fans!

    @ 2Dhoop

Sorry to have left out another player who will show many how athletic he can be on both ends. Sakamuran is not only tall but impresive. He may be the best athlete of all the ILH Bigs right next to Micah.

Sorry for the mishap and thanks for having my back 2Dhoop!

Darren will do a good job of pulling these boys together.

It's not the X's and O's that will define him at that little Missionary School in Manoa though.

It's his ability to handle their parents expectations.

There, if kids don't get playing time or make the teams that their parents expect them to make, what do they do? They call the Atheletic Department and complain. What does Athletics do? Call the coach and make him "correct" the error of his ways. That's if the coach is lucky and doesn't get fired, i.e. Greg Tacon.

Darren had to do a lot of damage control this summer when parents called to complain why their kids weren't on the better Intermediate team. I mean seriously. Give me a break. What kind of message or life lessons are you sending/teaching your kids.

Some of you feel Darren cannot or does not deserve to coach. Just give him a chance and see what he can do.

At 'Iolani, we would never think of calling Doc or Athletics to complain. But then again, we are also tripping over ourselves on all our championship trophies on the way to the AD's office!

Kamehameha gives Jesse the autonomy to run his program, and that's why he is successful. Doesn't hurt to have Christensen either, but he also has a lot of other players that aren't as gifted in height and skill. But they have bought into what he's trying to sell. Same at 'Iolani. The coaches, from Doc to Dean, have always had the school's support. Their players have bought into their program. So have their parents. Shit, I used to dick around in the gym at practice (can you believe, they ENCOURAGE their parents to come to practices!), but as soon as Doc would walk in, I would be on my best behavior!

To make a short story long, to answer D12's earlier question, I think the lack of championships at an overly abundant talent rich program like Punahou is due to the inmates running the asylum over there!

@ Brian, Congratulations getting into Maryknoll Buddy!
You have a Great Son, Very Nice and Respectable Young Man!
    Good Job!

Punahou, with it's Abundance of Talent, has Absolutely the Biggest Team in the State!
Playing together this Summer (Honolulu Sharks) these young men were playing Good "Above the Rim" Basketball.
If their PG (Pat) can make the right decisions offensively feeding the Punahou's Big men inside, they should be "Just Fine."

Iolani's ONE TEAM Philosphy is Very Visible in Iolani's Team Composuer and Demeaner!

Malik J (Punahou), Trevyn T (Iolani) and Micah C (Kamehameha) should be the Front Runners for "Player of the Year!"

Ed on his "Best Behavior!" ROFLMFAO!!!

    Back some from travel...

Lots of good comments in here to jump on:

I don't agree that KS matched up well with Punahou last year. Simply put, most neutral observers recognize that the semi-final was a job. 87 fouls to one? (Or something like that) KS shouldn't have gotten by the second best team in the State, Moanalua the night before. Tacon has too much class to go public, but they got hosed as well.

All that is ancient history though.

Punahou has one title in seven years b/c they don't play as a team.

Iolani exemplifies the team philosophy, they play together, for each and they win b/c of it. What a great game this is; a group working together is successful over more talented athletes.

The recent Punahou hire makes a statement. What it says to me is that, "Our professed values are irrelevant. Instead of hiring an educator, an on-campus teacher and professional, we hired a recruiter and club coach." Whether or not DM wins, it was a bad hire b/c the student comes before the athlete, or at least that is what Punahou professes.

AOP is an interesting story. I like that little school on the hill and hope they bring everyone down. Unlikely though, they're quite thin depth-wise.
