Wow, that is some pretty well-rounded stats. He does a little bit of everything.

Kamehameha's Micah Christenson has been named the 2009-10 Gatorade Hawai'i Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. Christenson becomes a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced this month.

The 6-foot-5 junior led the Warriors (26-7) to the Division I state championship game, averaging 16.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.9 steals, 2.2 assists and 1.7 blocks per game.

He scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds in the 46-43 Division I state championship game loss to 'Iolani.

Also a standout volleyball player, Christenson has maintained a 3.43 GPA. He has volunteered locally as a youth basketball instructor and by visiting ailing children at a hospital.

"He's the best player in the state," said Alika Smith, head coach of rival Punahou School. "He's athletic, and he's 6-foot-5. He can shoot, put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim. He likes to play inside, but he can go outside. He's slender, but he's stronger than he looks. He does it all."

Kainoa Chu is also a great kid. And for the finals, he had a great game. And so did Micah. Plus Micah did it all, as Coach Smith said, as in defense and bringing the ball up, and distributing it. And, as he didn't say, in team leadership, especially from the floor.

Iolani had a great supporting cast, all the way down to the second team, as seen in the finals, but they, first and second team, did not stop Micah this year - they just stopped his supporting cast. And still needed a last second prayer by Kainoa to beat Kam.

Looking over the season, no one stopped Micah, or played him even. He didn't have a bad game. And he never fouled out, but part of that could be the refs. Deservedly so, as he treated them with respect (part of it also is that the refs favored Kam shamelessly, at least in the state semis, but that's an old blog)

I hope you get first team . but the reality is you play the game the way you do because you love it. not for the first team, second team or any other team but your team keep going hard I know you'll make it.

Personally, the only stats that should matter to the kids are wins and losses. Who cares who scores, who rebounds, etc. This is a TEAM game and REAL team players often set each other up, often making that extra pass to a teammate in a better scoring position.

Team players understand that individual stats are only a microcosm or a quick snapshot of the bigger picture which are team achievements.

Like I said previously, stats are important, but they are linear and often do not give a real indication of how the games were played.

to me kainoa chu should have got it. he did just about the same things and he is a senior. chu led his team to win the state championship over christenson. don't get me wrong christenson is a great player but i think chu is more deserving. shoot, he could win it next year too if he continues to play basketball.

Thank you sweetbutta and hoopfanatic your right it is a team game and this year I played team ball but now it's over and team awards are over and since there are still individual awards coming out I hope I get acknowleged by the way I played this year and to get those awards you gotta have good all around stats

All this talk about who should've got it with their basketball abilities...didn't the article mention academic achievements and character off the court? Seems like we're only discussing one third of the qualifications for this award. I really don't know the academic and off court character of Chu or Monroe, but I'm assuming Christenson won the award with an obvious resume. Now if someone built thier case with Chu/Monroe having a higher GPA and numerous off-court activities, then we have a discussion.
