Well there's a lot of attention surrounding players and what they do to claim their name to fame in terms of their success on the court of Hawaii basketball. But to me there should be at least some attention pointed to the coaching here in Hawaii. What makes a good coach? Yes wins, yes state championships, and maybe even the so called upset. Looking at a deeper perspective just because a coach wins a state championship, or wins games, does that mean he or she is very good coach? To me I think its the way you relate to your players both on and off the court. You treat every player on your team equally and with respect. By breaking down the fundamentals of the game, and creating segments the overall pictures comes more clear to the players, who most of the time are looking to play college basketball. Sometimes, coaches do not prepare their kids enough in practice for the reality of the game. The mental aspect that comes with the physical aspect. We, as fans just see things from the outside looking in. Never behind the scenes where all the tweaking, adjustments and strategies are done. For all we know Damien might have the best coach in the world, but just because they are not an uppertier kind of team we might never suspect such a thing. It is a mystery that only a few understand.

Good perspective. Coches can be very influential in a teenagers life. To have a good coach is often times a blessing for both players and parents. Pete Smith, Doc Mugiishi, Jim Alegre, these are men that come to mind when I think of coaches in Hawaii. Not just for their collective championships, but for the way they have impacted young men on and off the court.

Great points and I agree wholeheartedly.
I learned from the greatest coach of all time (Coach K, Duke Blue Devils) that the #1 objective for any coach, teacher or individual working with young athletes is to inspire. Inspire these individuals to become the best that they can be.

I wish I played at Duke!
I listened to him speak a couple of times, once at a NIKE camp and the other at some conference. I also read a couple of his books.
