In the BIIF I see a lot fathers coaching their children or coaching against the school their child plays on. I'm not talking about head coahces, but I'm talking about all coaches, be it head or assistant.

I wonder how the dynamics are in the household. What about watching you child practice at a rival school you coach against. No "nit picking" here. Just a parent who will be facing this dilemma in a few years from now. It's not an easy task I assume, being that we all love our Keiki and want what's best for them. So can you coach, be a parent and a spectator at the same time?

A lot of food for thought here.

I think it's in your son's best interest to stop coaching while he plays. A great example was Coach Marciel of Kalaheo. He took a break while his 2 sons flourished at Iolani in multiple sports.

I have to believe that they did so well because they could look in the stands and see their dad there cheering and offering unconditional support.

When you have children, how hard is it to give 3-4 seasons of basketball?

@HF-I think thats is so true because children always looks for the support and approval from there parents. I enjoyed my parents being at all of my games and just being able to look into the stands and see there face. There are a few out there that will take coaching jobs and miss out on watching there own child play and not realize how much they are missing out on.

Coach Harry Scanlan and his son are enjoying every minute of it. I believe the late Pete Smith was another coach who coached both of his sons and was successful at it. Different sport same scenario was the late John Velasco of Radford High School. He coached both of his sons at one point and time only have come home to play against one another in the Hula Bowl.

    thanks for the posts.

@ BIIF Fan I think OldG wanted to know how it would be when he coached against his sons team not with his son.
Think HF hit it on the spot. It's a tough situation! Your kid is only in high school once and would probably need the support not just with you being their physically (in the stands)but mentally as well. When your there watching you can see and understand where he maybe coming (should he have issues)when they need someone there to listen and vent. Your there watching and your more able to help them work through their concerns. Good Luck with your choice!
