Sorry, not from Oahu, but I was wondering where Coach Darren coached last? I can't remember for the life of me, but congratulations and best of luck next year.

From what I know, and it is not a lot, he has been in the Punahou system for quite some time. I dont think he has ever been a Varsity Head Coach, and someone please correct me if I am wrong, but he has been a head coach. Somebody else could probably give more info that I can. Take care.

Darren has been coaching the Sharks club team, which has included Malik Johnson, DeForest Buckner, Marcus Monroe, Marcus Keene, et al. He has also been an assistant coach at Punahou for 4-5 years. He started when Dan Hale was still head coach. He's a dedicated coach who appears to really care about the players and their development. Congratulations and good luck, Darren!

Congratuations to Darren Matsuda. He comes across as humble himself and he demands the best of his players. I'm sure you will lead the Puns to some championships.

Congrats. From an outsider's view sounds like a good hire as Matsuda seems personable (spoke with him a few years back at Lopes tournament), treats his players with respect and has proven he can coach/manage a team with big talent and expectations. Look for Puns to be consensus #1...team is loaded and includes many Shark's players. X factor could be the point guard position.

Darren is a great recruiter, not so sure about coach, but a great recruiter

@spalding - no doubt, Shark's traveling squad has best collection of talent I've seen at the club level ever. Remains to be seen how they play in a more structured type of game that you find in league play. Would have loved to see them play the Hoops Paiena (spelling?) team that was tearing up the club scene a few years ago. That was the team with Marcus Holyfield, Jordan Ho-Ching and some other ILH ballers. Not as much raw talent as Shark's but their trap "D" and fast break were just plain sick.

Like most selections of this kind, I'm sure this one wasn't made without some sort of behind the scenes politics and/or controversy. On the outside looking in, it seems very strange to me that Mike Taylor wasn't given the job. Perhaps, Punahou did not want to upset the apple cart, so to speak, and to tear down the women's program in order to build up the men's. I mean, what's not to like about Taylor otherwise? Strange days...

@spalding anyone can be a great recruiter if they are selling Punahou. Lets see "Come play basketball at Punahou and get a free education at one of the best schools in the nation" "Let me think about it. Kailua or Punahou, Waianae or Punahou, McKinley or Punahou, any public school or Puanhou. The right coach was not picked due to politics. Ane and Scott were afraidto hire Gary because they were classmates and friends for the past 40 years, That would of sent a loud message that they hired a friend even though Gary has paid his dues over the years at Punahou. Shame on them for doing this not for the first time but the second time. If they would of hired him instead of Alika they would of not of had this problem in the first place.

Brutha Screen, I agree and I Certainly can Appreciate that the Sharks are Loaded with Abundance of Talent. in Fact, I'd Say "Awesomely Loaded!" But Best Club Ever? If you have been watching any Summer League Basketball, you would know that the Sharks Lost to the "Hawaii Raiders" in the Le Jardin Summer Tournament Championship Game. As well as Losing to the "Hawaii Raiders" and 'Iolani Team in the ILH Summer League! I Believe that the "Hawaii Raiders" Coached by Greg Ush and Ryan Hirata are the Team to Beat this Summer! Just My Opinion, the "Hawaii Raiders" have the Record and Stats to Prove It!

That is correct 2D, the Hawaii Raiders have beaten the Sharks a couple of times this summer. The 'Iolani Raiders also beat the Sharks this summer as well.

    Howzit Braddah BBJ!
Nice Breakdown on next Seasons Top 10!
I like how you have the ILH Big 3 Tied for 1st!
'Iolani Returns All but 4, Kamehameha has the "Micah Factor" and Punahou whom is Simply Huge will have a Fresh Start with Coach Darren at the Helm!
Good Luck to All Teams, both OIA and ILH this Upcoming Season!

@2dhoop - Yes, most physically talented does not equal best team. That's where coaching, execution, team chemistry, program culture, etc. come in. Remains to be seen how Puns gel in regular season.

It was a wild Iolani summer league. Raiders beat Sharks. I didn't see game, were Sharks at "full force?" AOP looked pretty good (almost beat Iolani) and Mid-Pac beat Iolani but got creamed by Moanalua. Maryknoll looked shaky. Overall, hard to judge as rosters fluctuated as boys jumped from school to club team, had family trips, football, etc. Good luck to all the club teams headed up to mainland for their various tourneys.

Would like to see what Greg Tacon would do with that Punahou talent. Why can't they get coaches like that?

    Agreed db!

Screen, Good Point, All Summer League Teams were never in "Full Force" due to Football, Travel, etc.
In Fact, Most ILH Summer League teams carried Players that may not be playing at the D1 level this 2010-11 Season.

I also Believe that the Sharks will Do Really Well in LV.

    Good Luck Coach Johnson!

caliboy...the Hawaii Raiders just beat the Sharks, again, this morning in Vegas. The Raiders were up by 19 or 20 by halftime. Sharks hit two late 3's to lose by 8 or else the final score would have been in the double digits.

Just goes to show that the best assembled talent does not automatically equate to the better prepared team.

Not only did Hawaii Raiders win a game, which you didnt think were capable of, they are moving on in the tournament. The Sharks, on the other hand, are done.

As of now the Raiders are the #1 club team in Hawaii with the Sharks #2. #3 would have to be Southside. Lanakila and Imua would round out the top 5.
