The Derrick Low Basketball Clinic will be held Sunday, July 11 at Kawananakoa Gym in Keaukaha. It will run from 9 a.m. to noon and has been limited to 60 invited participants.

"The clinic is open for the public to watch and T-shirts will be on sale that Derrick can autograph," said Hilo clinic spokesman Jason Mandaquit. "We have invited players from Big Island high schools to participate with an emphasis on the high-school aged players getting an advanced workout with Derrick."

The clinic is free for the invited participants.

Low is a former NCAA Division I and Iolani Schools standout. He was a four-year starter at Washington State while helping lead the Cougars to two trips to the NCAA Tournament. He earned various honors during his collegiate career, including all-conference and all-region/district.

Low, a 6-foot-1 combo guard, now plays professionally overseas, including this past year in Lithuania. He also had successful stints in Australia and France, as well as played for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA summer league after graduating from Washington State.

Besides the clinic for the players, Low and some invited collegiate players will participate in a one-hour shooting clinic following the completion of the three-hour teaching session.

"Derrick will show the players what a professional workout looks like and give some pointers on what helped him as a high school, collegiate and now a professional player," said Derrick Low's father, Ken, who is working with Mandaquit to set up the clinic in Hilo.

"Derrick wanted to do this clinic to give back to the fans around the state that supported him over the years," Ken Low said. "It's also for a good cause and Derrick wants it to be a clinic where the players learn not only about basketball, but also about the importance of getting a quality education."

At Iolani, Low was a three-time state player of the year while leading the Raiders to three straight state titles. He was heavily recruited by several NCAA Division I teams, including Washington State, Gonzaga, Iowa State and the University of Hawaii.

Proceeds from the Derrick Low clinic will go to a Keaukaha girls basketball team that plans on traveling to play in an upcoming tournament in Las Vegas. The girls team, under coach Ben Pana, had previously bought tickets for the trip, but later found out it was a ticket scam and lost the money.

Derrick is currently trying to hook up with another NBA team to play in its summer league.

The Derrick Low Clinic ran well today, with 52 players and a handful of coaches from around the Big Island participating at the Keaukaha Gym. The clinic ran from 9 a.m. to noon, and then Derrick ran some shooting drills for some of the top high schoolers afterwards.

Derrick awarded autographed leather basketballs to the following outstanding players at the clinic: Hoku Liftee, Alyssa Ferreira, Hanale Lee Loy and Kainoa Kawaha.

The clinic featured Derrick running defensive drills, ballhandling/dribbling drills, attacking off the screen and roll, defending the screen and roll, and a full-court fastbreak drill.

Hilo High coaches Jason Mandaquit and Ben Pana helped put on the clinic, with the tremendous support of Derrick, his father, Ken, and several individuals or businesses that made donations. Proceeds from the event went to Ben Pana's Keaukaha girls basketball team that will compete later this month in a tournament in Las Vegas.

At the end of the clinic, the soft-spoken Derrick talked to the players about studying hard and working hard on their games. Ken Low also told the youngsters "to be the best you can be in whatever you do." They were joined at the clinic by Chase Low, Derrick's 11-year-old brother, a budding baseball, football star.

Mandaquit and Pana would like to see the D-Low Clinic become an annual event if Derrick can fit it into his busy schedule.

Derrick and his agent are currently evaluating their options while deciding where Derrick will play professional basketball this coming year. He will most likely sign with a team in the next month or so and head out in late August or early September. Since graduating from Washington State, he has played pro ball in Australia, France and Lithuania.

For all the Big Island basketball players, coaches and fans that attended today's clinic, thank you Derrick and Ken as well as Jason Mandaquit and Ben Pana for all the hard work to make it happen.

Good luck D-Low in your professional career. Hawaii fans are pulling for you to live your dreams and enjoy those experiences around the world.
