Anyone know if the Damien coaching job is open to the public? Now that Coito's gone someone should seriously step in and change the culture there. I thought that Kamanao did a decent job there. Anyone know why he left to coach with Tacon at Moanalua?

that figures I think the job is a good way to jump start a program if you can get some kids in.

Actually, Damien has loads of potential. The problem stems from the fact that many of their top players and athletes actually choose NOT to play.

wow really why is that. to me seems like an ego thing. If they thought they were that good and could make a difference then why not play. they havent proven anything such as potential.

I know several people that want to apply for the Damien job, but through my inside sources, I have heard that AD Wally Aina gave the job to someone already instead of opening it up for candidates to apply. This is one of the main reasons why Damien will never be able to compete, at least at the Division 1 level.

The AD doesn't want to deal with sifting through candidates and setting up interviews as well as a selection committee. I tried calling his office and his mail box is so full that I couldn't leave a message. Is it right to give the job to someone without going through formalities? Maybe. But I think in a case like Damien, its important to really find the right person for a program that has won 2 regular season games in 3 years.

Personally, I think the right person in charge may be able to change the culture and mentality there at Damien. A lot of the athletes didn't want to play because they didn't like Coito and his coaching style. There is so much potential there...all boys school with grades 7-12, athletes are abound...not plenty, but enough to field a competitive basketball team.

Wow who they give it to? That was pretty lame I guess the administration doesn't look at the big picture. whatever easy win for the raiders next year again.

not only an easy win for iolani
also Kamehameha, Punahou, and St. Louis

With all due respects to Damien, I don't want to say any names on the board. But I will say this, he was the JV head coach last year.

Hey Jones, wasn't the JV coach promoted after Coito was removed?

Yes. He was interim for the remainder of the season.

Like BBJ said, Damien had some issues with players not respecting the coach or his style of coaching. With the right leadership, there is enough talent to field a much more competitive team. Basketball is actually one of the school's biggest draws, as the school fields 2 intermediate, 2 junior varsity, and a varsity team within their program. They did have a fairly young team this season.

Howzit HIHoopsFan...actually, I do care about Damien. I am an alumni and I have coached there some time ago.

You are right, though. Damien hasn't been good for quite some time now. They have some pretty good athletes but Damien never really had the "year-round" basketball players that Iolani, Punahou, Kamehameha and the other ILH schools would have.

I believe that not only having the right coach, but a supportive administration would be needed to turn things around. But, by the looks of it, the AD doesn't really care about basketball.

Actually, Damien made some noise as recently as 5 or 6 years ago when Mello was the coach. They knocked off Punahou once that year and even got some press time with the local media. That team was not overly talented, but they played hard, had plenty of discipline, and their main threat was a fiery player named Decosta.

Ranson was as tough as nails...could drop 3's with the best of 'em and could take his defender to the rack.

Yeah, Ranson was a difficult player to guard and gameplan for. He could shoot the long ball, but was smart enough to take what the defense gave. What really made him a good player was his willingness to make the extra pass and trust his teammates to produce.

I believe Damien also had some talent back in the mid 90s with athletic players like Kawika Smith and Chris McGill. Given the right direction and support, they could easily compete in the ILH.

also hard to coach. dats cool jones that u care. what year did they beat punhou? dont remember that.

i dont know about easily competing. maybe being more competitive would be a more realistic goal. hard to say they can EASILY do anything when they got like 2-3 wins in the last 2-3 years.

I believe that Damien beat Tacons punahou team when Puns had Dane Uperesa there. Mello actually became ILH coach of the year that year. Damien also beat St. Louis at St. Louis that year.

After he took over, Brian seemed to do a pretty good job w/ the Damien boys. He instilled some discipline and respect. They had the disappointing loss to Maryknoll in the the ILH tourney, but Maryknoll came on pretty strong at the end of the season. The game before they beat Damien, they barely lost to Saint Louis. . .

MB, If memory serves me correctly, it was the year after Dane, which was the year before the Miah/Spencer teams.
Damien's biggest problem which also happens to be the same as MPI and Maryknoll, is that they play in a league with 4 really good programs and only 2.5 spots for the State Tournament. If the State Tournament drops to 8 teams next year that means even less State births for the ILH. That just equals more disapointment for the Monarchs. Every team should start the season with a hope of advancing to the State Tournament, it's pretty tough when you know you have absolutly no chance at all. I know only one team at Damien can play down (they choose Football) to Div II, but it would help their program to learn how to win games with attainable rewards at the end. Getting your brains beaten in every week gets old really fast. And beating Maryknoll should not make your season.

With all due respect to Punahou, Iolani,Kamehameha and St.Louis bb programs- if Damien got a decent coach who knows what he is doing- Damien could suprise next year with 8 seniors to be and 2 junior (to be) post players returning next year. But the coach must know how to work the 6'5" big boy into the game plan. The coaches this year didn't know how to utilize him. Eveything hinges on the new coach.

Coaching can make a big diffrence in the competitive ILH.
