Derrick signing to play in the Israel "Super" or premier professional league is a good step for him. The top teams from the league have fared well in the Euro leagues/tournaments and have occasionally played exhibition games against NBA teams.
In fact in 2005, Israel powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv upset the Toronto Raptors 105-103 in Toronto to become the first European team to beat an NBA team on its home floor.
Maccabi Tel Aviv won the league last year and has dominated the league since it began in 1954, with 48 titles.
Derrick will play for up-and-coming Maccabi Haifa, which finished runner-up to Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 2008-09 season.
The Israel Super League has a lot of import players and about 75 to 100 U.S. players are playing in the various pro leagues in Israel, with the top 10 teams competing in the Super League. The league is considered an alternative to NBA competition with several players over the years going on to try to make it in the NBA.
Maccabi Haifa will play an exhibition game against the New Jersey Nets this coming season, giving Derrick a chance to go head-to-head with NBA guards.
Good luck to Derrick, someone who all Hawaii fans can be proud to support.
