lame! but I guess in these hard times that is what it has come down to.
I know Mich Shintani(1st team BIIF) moved to Hilo from Waiakea, and Dakota Allen(1st team BIIF) was also going to move to Hilo. If this is true Hilo will move to the front of the pack in the BIIF.
Boys
1. Hilo
2. Kamehameha
3. Waiakea, Keaau, or Honokaa
Close race from top to bottom
1st team
PG Haku Ishibashi (Keaau)
SG Mitch Shintani (Hilo)
SF Kamu Lorenzo (Honokaa)
PF Jace Carvalho (Kamehameha)
C Dakota Allen (Hilo or Waiakea????)
St. Joesph really good shot at the DII championship
Big Island brothers help me out here...in your guys' opinion, is the split equal or will one side be significantly stronger than the other.
Aloha BBJones,
Just my opinion, but the split is beneficial to the East side (especially DII teams). You have Hilo, Waiakea, Keaau, and Kamehameha for DI on the East side. DII teams are St. Joseph, Pahoa, Kau, and Laupahoehoe. As far as the boys teams, replace Laupahoehoe with Kohala and you could have your play-off teams. The West side is extremely week this season which could cause problems for top teams Kohala (boys) and Kona (girls) as far as competitive games during the season. I heard the
West side may play each team a total of 3 times to have an equal amount of total games played as the East. Best thing about the split..., not having to drive to Kohala to watch Hilo/Waiakea/St. Joe games, or to Kona to see them play Waiakea. I hope those two teams have a stacked pre-season. Maybe I should take my mens team over for some scrimmages? Is that even allowed? BBJ, thats just my opinion, but honestly, I think the BIIF will lose gate money with these changes, maybe they should come up with a mid-season "all-star" weekend (tournament) to generate East/West interest and most of all, CASH. Aloha
Aloha BBall4ever...thanks for the update.
I wrote a prediction blog not too long ago...can you please put in your predictions for the BIIF?
Thanks Brother!
As long as they don't split the menu up at Ken's. Will be there Dec 9-13!
Aloha guys,
From what I've heard the two players from Waiakea(Shintani and Allen) did transfer to Hilo High.
The East side of the island is alot tougher than the west side. here are my predictions...
East
1.Hilo
2.Waiakea
3.Keaau
4.Kamehameha
5.St.Joseph
6.Pahoa
7.Ka'u
West
1.Honokaa
2.Kohala
3.Kealakehe
4.Konawaena
5.HPA
6.Laupahoehoe
7.Parker
I think that Dakota Allen and Mitchel Shintani transferring to Hilo isn't going to make as big of an impact as a lot of people think. At Hilo Mitchel Shintani will most likely be playing point, however he isn't a true point guard at all, and his court vision isn't up to par with some of the other point guards in the league, IE. Bautista and Scanlan-Leite. For me he dribbles too much as well, and this could cause Hilo problems on offense with the addition of Dakota Allen in the middle.
Dakota Allen will have a bigger impact on Hilo, than Shintani will in my opinion. He will give them the inside presence that they lacked for the past couple seasons. However, I am wondering how he will fit in with Hilo's full court press. He isn't as mobile a big man as people think and he might cause some big holes in Hilo's already diminishing full court press. Also in Hilo's run and gun style, how many touches will he really be getting per game?
There are a lot of questions being raised throughout the BIIF this year, and it should be a very interesting season. I will talk some more on my pics for East and West this year later on today.
howzit my brotha's from down unda!
During the summer, a select team from Hilo came down and played a couple of games in the Iolani summer league. Can someone please tell me who and where these kids are from? Also, who was coaching them?
They were a good bunch of kids and I would like to track their progress.
Thanks.
BBJ, most of the kids were from Hilo High. I believe they also had one kid from Keaau and one from Kamehameha-Hawaii.
If the Shintani boy doesn't have to play the point, I feel he will be more productive. I think that he will thrive in the full court up and down game of Hilo. If the Allen boy hustles back on D in the press, he will be alright. Offensively, he will need to run the floor, because Hilo doesn't like to play in the half court set much, but maybe they will now that they have a post player.
Nuff about basketball brew. Where else we going eat in Hilo?
What about the night life? Last year, we went to the something-orchid bar on Kilauea Avenue, I think. It was alright. Music, dancing, adult beverages, etc.
My back was sore but. From trying to lift the Naha Stone in front of the library! Everytime I go to Hilo, I always go there to take picture of the stone and to touch it for the MANA!
Ed, considering some of the other things you like to touch I hope you wash your hands before you touch the sacred Naha Stone.
All I know is that I want to eat some of that killah chicharones they sell in KTA. That buggah is winnahs!
Geez...can anyone say TRANSFER RULE??? What is going on in the BIIF? Last I checked, you had to have a really good reason to transfer schools...like moving homes or family issues. Aren't Hilo and Waiakea like 5 miles from eachother? Whose okaying all these transfers? Sounds political to me, since obviously it's for Basketball and not academics. Am I wrong?
Ed, we can go to Kims or Wai after the games. Unreal pupus and the beers are good. I don't put on my dancing shoes anymore(little overweight, might blow out a knee), but if I have 1 to many then I'll grab da mic and rip it up--nah LOL!!
Howzit Grass shack! It happens all the time here on Oahu but I guess when someone transfers on the Big Isle it must be really big news since its a smaller community.
Not too long ago there was a big discussion here on the boards regarding a Konawaena transfer.
Grassshack, this is just what I heard here in little old Hilo. The Shintani boy moved w/ his dad which is in the district of Hilo and Dakota Allen's dad bought a house in the district of Hilo.
Just what I heard.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Konawaena situation isn't technically a transfer because she went from 8th grade to HS. I know it's fishy...and I really don't want to get everyone all worked up about the Kona thing.
However, as I see it, when you go from a HS to another HS , public or private, someone needs to okay your *athletic* elegibilty. They will let you transfer schools, but if you played a sport at the old school, you're supposed to be inelegible to play that same sport for 12 consecutive months at the new school. The BIIF used to have a "first transfer free" rule, but they do not anymore. I just read the rule on the HHSAA site and it's pretty clear...so my question is, who is okaying all these transfers?
I heard a bunch of Hilo High girls ballers also jumped ship...
Oooh...sounds like a situation brewing out there!
Let's see if any other big isle brothers out there can chime in on this situation as well...
FYI mitch always lived in the hilo district..he had a G.E. to go to waiakea
fordakids, I believe you are right. Hilo is Mitch's home school.
Yea the transfer rule is garbage. It is completely one sided and favors the public schools. It's just a tactic to keep kids in public schools. Why else would they only let kids transfer from private to public and not public to private?
Some of those arguments are that families could be having a hard time paying for tuition. Which is true in some cases. However, what if a public school student gets an opportunity to go to a private school to get a better education? IE, say someone's grandparents come into a sum of money or something and they want to pay for their grand kids to go to a private school?....I just think that they should go back to the one free transfer rule. That was fine and everyone was happy with that.
And the new system obviously isn't stopping kids from transferring anyways.
Konawaena Girls should easily take the West side of the island. No competition for them. Their only competion would be Waiakea which is on the East side. With Galdeira,Hanato-Smith,Wall and the two Awas they should have no problem.
Being at Hilo Mitch wouldn't run the point. I'd probably set him up as a 2 or 3. I think the Kainoa Kawaha can lock down the starting point position for the remainder of his high school career.Dakota will fit the need for their lack of low post players. If he can generate double teams in the post it will open up the Leong boy to make the defense pay.Leong will cause defenses problems with Mitch and Dakota coming to Hilo. He has a nice touch from the perimeter and exceptionally quick for post players to guard him out there. He is to strong in the post for guards to handle him 1 on 1.He is also a great passer and sees the court well. This will be the mis-match that Hilo needs to get by the other schools in the BIIF D-1 season.
