Here we go, it's the best time of the year!!
1. Iolani-Belive the hype, more offensive weapons
than Mighty Mo. Snipers, bombers and
nukes.2. Moanalua-They'll lose some games during
regular season, but who wants
to play them at states?3. Kahuku-Bigs, Bigs and more Bigs. If they get
one more guard then they could win it all.4. Kamehameha-Great coach, one great player. Will
that be enough? We'll see.5. Mid Pac-Here is the sleeper team in the ILH,
won't beat the Raiders, but watch out
everyone else.6. Hilo-They steal players like Curt keeps retainers
from his client. Maybe a semi final type
team.7. Punahou-I feel for Alika cause he's a good guy,
but this may be more drama than an
episode of Housewifes of Atlanta,8. Mililani-If this were a NJB tournament, they
could win, but this is big boy hoops
so they won't.9. Kaimuki-Just because. Grant will get his team
in position, but this roster won't
have the fire power like the past.10. St Joseph-Trust me, this is your Div II champs.
Finally a school with a small
enrollment will do it.Take this to the bank boy's

I think Iolani is the team to beat. But I believe that the defending champion should be #1 until they are beaten.

Backpick, great, and funny breakdown!
HoopFanatic, I always considered you to have great basketball knowledge. Which is why I am confused with your logic now. This isn't boxing. You don't have to beat the champ, to be the champ. Last I checked, Minns, deRego, Viena, Dumlao, Kamano, and Bode didn't score a point, or grab a rebound in the summer league.

I treat preseason polls the same way as the NCAA treats their football and basketball polls so I find myself asking the question, "What do you have in the tank?".
In high school and NCAA, kids are graduating, transferring, injuring themselves, academic probation, girlfriend problems...whatever. With that said, a competent voter has to vote on what a team has NOW not what they had THEN.
Let's say Duke University wins the NCAA basketball title one year and they graduate half their team, which scored more than half their points and accounted for more than half their rebounds. I would put good money that they are not voted #1 in the preseason polls the following season.
HF, you put Mid Pac in the poll at #6...which is fine. But you place them at #6 because of what they have and what you think they might do. Shouldn't every team in the poll be subjected to that same reasoning as well?
My poll:
1. Iolani
2. Punahou
3. Moanalua
4. Kamehameha
5. Kaimuki
6. Kahuku
7. Mililani
8. Hilo

BasketballJones:
For an often, and I mean often. I mean REALLY often illogical guy, you seem to make a lot of sense. This time.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Jones, illogical does not refer to your b-ball knowledge, but rather your overall demeanor and outlook on life!

Das how I roll!!

I see your points. But here is mine. The season is very long. The poll is subjective and mostly just an indicator since the polls have no merit on state berths.
I have taken your points into view. But I believe that the NCAA and high school basketball have a different agenda. In both NCAA football and basketball, the polls have a bearing on the postseason. For football, the polls affect the equation for BCS rankings. For basktball, the selection committee uses the various polls to select at-large berths. So given that criteria, it is very important to be as accurate as possible.
I understand that summer league can be a preview of how the season can possibly turn out. But given the variables of players missing, lack of practice time, adjusted rules for summer, etc., it isn't really a "true" indicator of who is the best team.
So I feel summer league, quality of coaching, player personal, program atmosphere (ability to win big games), and others, are the variables that I take into account.
Like I said in a previous post, Iolani is the best team in my opinion based on the variables I mentioned.
But since the poll have no bearing on the post-season, I do feel someone should beat Kamehameha regardless of current personal. Since the season is many weeks, either Kamehameha will lose or not. If they lose early, then the appropriate team should replace them. If they continue to win, then the #1 ranking is justified, don't you think?
I believe that in high school (only), someone should have to knock the king off their throne since the "mantra" of the HHSAA is to let the kids decide it on the court/field.
Do you feel that isn't a worthy goal? If Iolani/Punahou/Kahuku/Moanalua is a better #1, they will have an entire season to knock them off.
But if your team's goal is to be ranked #1 in an unofficial poll for the entire season, then please excuse my logic.
And I am holding every team to the same standard. The variables I mentioned above are some of the variables. But winning a state title is an important variable and the other teams in my top 10 do not have one last year.
The one thing I noticed about Iolani, Kamehameha, and Punahou are regardless of who graduates, they are always in the mix due to talent level, program recognition, and quality coaching.
I hope that helps.

1. Punahou
2. Iolani
3. Kahuku
4. Kamehameha
5. Moanalua
6. Mililani
7. Kalaheo
8. Farrington
9. MidPacific
10.?
Punahou has got size and with a new coach, have potential to be No. 1. Depends on the mind set.
Iolani is the best coached, play in a system, solid team.
Kahuku will have size, but Akina is no point guard. Will not be as quick now that Galeai us gone.
Kam has some talent, Christensen is tall can shoot over ILH defenses.
Moanalua is a finesse, shooting team, all with guard mentality. Will Monroe continue shooting or will he get his teammates involved.
Mililani has all around talent, play in the talentless west.
Kalaheo has a long reputation. Talent is thin, Fernandez will shoulder a lot of the load. Furtado will coach hard this year.
Farrington has Saycon, quick, fast, and have some height in Williams. Silva will get the most out of his plaers.
MidPacific has some outside shooters and Matthews, but have to go against the ILH night after night will be tough.Posted 2 years ago # -
HoopFanatic: You kidding, right?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Why did BBJ tell you that I was messing with him? LOL!
Posted 2 years ago # -
bbfan - How do we know if Iolani is well coached? Doc retired and Dean will show the state what kind of coach he is. I think we have to wait until a statement like that is made. I think he will do fine, but evidence is much better than opinion.
You think Punahou is better than Iolani?
As for Kahuku, you say that Akina is no Galeai. So who is handling the ball for Kahuku?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Punahou is not a better team than Iolani, but have height in Buckner, good ball handlers. If coached well, should be able to beat Iolani. As for Kahuku, I do not have the answer, maybe you do, who is going to handle the ball?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Plus Punahou will be able to start focussing on basketball now as their football team got pounded last night by my Warriors. POUNDED!

Hoop Fanatic, you have Kaimuki finishing in eighth. There is no Tautofi. You have Steitzel who is a streak shooter but no pint guard and not much else, interested to see how you have them finishing eighth?
Posted 2 years ago # -
No one knows if Tautofi is not playing at Kaimuki. When the date comes and Tautofi isn't playing for Kaimuki, I will adjust accordingly.
No one has publicly proved that he will not play for Kaimuki. Didn't he enroll at Waipahu, then move to Vegas, and now some people say he is coming home?
I do not know who will handle the ball for Kahuku other than Akina, which is why I do not have them ranked #3 like you do. Since you have them rated so high, don't you think you should have an idea? They are big, but their bigs cannot dribble the ball or extend outside of the key on defense.
Posted 2 years ago # -
HF: No, Jones didn't say anything. Was just wondering if you actually believed what you wrote!
Posted 2 years ago # -
In order for Tautofi to play at Kaimuki, if not mistaken he has to be registered 60 days prior to the start of the season. Kahuku will have size over the not so competitive OIA East, not enough ball to go around on the Moanalua team.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Several coaches told me that the 60 days prior to the season for Tautofi to be eligible is in late November (don't remember the exact date, sorry).
What does "not enough ball to go around the Moanalua team" mean?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Ed, are u, BBJ, and 2Dhoop coming to all 4 days at Moanalua?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Ed just trying to liven up the debate here, haha....I was actually trying to get under BBJ's skin. I just talked to him, I guess he figured it out...
BTW, I see your Warriors spanked the Buffs last night. Maybe Alika and his staff will be happy since they will have the football boys on the first day of try-outs.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hoop Fanatic If you follow Moanalua, offense revolves around Monroe. High volume shooter. Start of the season is January 4, today would be the 60 day window. I believe it is 60 days prior to the first day of practice on 12-1-09.
