Who is gib Arnold
Posted 2 years ago # -
Gib Arnold was the Associate head Coach at USC... His father was also a prominent coach... If this is so, I'd be truly surprised... Kobe was willing to do a lot of things if his father would have gotten the job... Oh well, we've made worse decisions.. LOL

Word is that most, if not all, of Nash's 250K buyout came in the form of Punahou donors. If that was the case then Gib Arnold was a lock for the position.
His dad, Frank, coached at UH for a number of years right before Riley Wallace. He had a rough tenure here as head coach of the Rainbow Warriors. Personally, I think Gib Arnold is a great pick as the next coach. He is considered one of the best recruiters in the country and was counted as one of the nation's up and coming coaches in the country. I wish him well.
On the other hand, I don't think Joe Bryant would have been a good pick.

Jones, if it is true that the money came from Punahou donors, then I call that genius! That is the way to show some clout!

Also, in 1987, Arnold was the top Hawaii Basketball player. But he wasn't allowed to play in states because he was too old I believe.

I don't know if I would go as far to call that genius, but it just goes to show who the real playas are.

Remember, the state is strapped for money so just handing someone a quarter million dollars to go away is crazy. Honestly, if UH had paid him the remaining vsalary they would have kept him somewhere to make him work for the quarter mil. Instead, Nash is walking away free and clear and the only way for that to happen is for the money to be coming feom elsewhere besides the state's coffers.
Exact same situation when Von Appen was fired. He was still on contract when they fired him but they gave him a post at Honolulu Community College.

If you can afford it, and you want to put one of your guys into that position then it is genius. There's no coincidence that the people donating this money has that kind of money to throw around. It's called business sense and practice. They use these kinds of techniques and it is one of the reasons they have the ability to throw money around to make the wheels turn.

I'm not saying it will be a successful hire, but if your money can influence others, why not? That is how many people get jobs around our nation.

The minority in our society are people who get jobs or get opportunities based solely on their merit.
The majority get opportunities based on lineage, connections, money, etc.
As for Barack, I have no idea. I don't live in DC, and I don't know the game being played there. So I cannot accurately comment.

I'm very interested to see how successful Coach Arnold will be! I would love to see him bring in the type of recruits that he brought in for USC. Read in USC Bio. that his a great recruiter w/ alot of connections (national and international). Good luck to him! The budget here at Hawaii is in no way close to that of USC, but a contact is a contact, just as a connection is a connection!! GOOD LUCK!!

Best of luck to you Gib. I sincerely hope that you fair better then you father here in the 50th state. Bring in those recruits...We need'um.
