An outer island matchup in the prized game has to be a blow to the HHSAA. I'm expecting a small turnout at tonights game due to no Oahu teams invloved in the title game and it being scheduled on a Friday, which leaves very minimal time for outer island fans to plan a trip around work. I bet the HHSAA prays for a ILH vs OIA game as revenue is always nice in that rivalry. It almost happened in the boys season a few years ago where KS-Hawaii made the finals while Kona lost in the semi's. What a travesty that would have been...not only two outer island teams, but an all-BIIF final?

actually i think the support for kona and lahainaluna has been better than any team on oahu. maybe make next years state tornament in hilo since kona will be in the finals again. 3000 roaring fans will show up no matter who they play. just a thought.

HawN, I don't think the HHSAA prays for ILH/OIA matchups. Often times, we hide behind names like "HHSAA" to make generalized statements without facts. The HHSAA is really just a couple of people hired by Keith Amemeiya to help him out. Amemeiya has demonstrated his genuine concern for ALL of Hawaii's athletes, boys and girls, small school/big school, Oahu/non-Oahu time and time and again. He put up his own money to guarantee the the Division 2 format for goodness sakes.
I was at a couple of these girls games and Brew is right-- the outer island support was better than the Oahu teams. You should also know that most of the state tournament format and site selections is determined at the annual HIADA conference, which includes all of the AD's of all five leagues.
In many cases the "host" league is in charge of things like concessions, programs, T-shirts, etc... I went to buy a program on the second day and they were all sold out. I'm pretty sure the host league this year was the OIA, since the first round games were at Radford and McKinley, and they did a so-so job with the tournament. Obviously, if you're into making money you'd get your act together a bit more and have more programs available. They are so concerned with over ordering and having too many that they annually under order. Also, the Blaisdell is a weak arena for this type of event-- it's dead even when it's loud, sight lines are terrible, and there's just no atmosphere for high school basketball. Not to mention, parking is 6 bucks!
If not for the inspired play of Taufa, Kona would have walked through this tournament and we'd all be sighing a collective yawn.

@db yes Taufa played very well, but that Lahainaluna team was tough. Very impressed with Viela, great ball handling, vision. Her passing to Taufa was great. Viela was the best point guard this evening and her maturity showed. Though Galderia was hurt, her team could have involved her more. She did not get many touches even when coming off screens.

Taufa was a beast and Viela was rock steady!!! Congrats Lunas!!!! Kona u also had a great tournament, keep your heads up and continue to push ahead. You will have many more great years!!!

StL-- No doubt that Viela is an amazing player. However, Taufa was the difference. In the Punahou game, she got in foul trouble early and there was a marked difference in her team's play. Punahou was aggressive charging the basket, got offensive rebounds, second and third chances, and were set defensively. When Taufa came back in in the second half, it was like watching a different team. Punahou was tentative and had no answer for her inside.

next year Konawaena will come out strong so as Punahou, as for the Lahainaluna not so sure since their post player (Taufa) will not return with them, the two favore will be Konawaena and Punahou

I was at this game and I'm glad I went! What a game! Even before the game I was happy for two things: Number one, that it was Big Island vs. Maui for the State title, and number two, that they had an all-women crew working the game. I know those three officials and they worked hard to earn the chance to call the game. What a historic night for Hawaii girls' basketball! Congrats to Lahainaluna, you folks came back from a huge deficit to win it the hard way. Kona, we all know you'll be back again next year. As for holding the states in Hilo, I like that idea. I would fly there to watch the game. My Aunty and Uncle live in Hilo.
