Here are my Mt. Kaala picks.
1. Mark Muguishi
2. Pete Smith
3. Larry Manigulus
4. Chris McGauglinPosted 1 year ago # -
MB-Larry's brother Al coached larry didnt. Back in the day they were only 2 public schools to choose from hilo and waiakea and even before then you just had one which was hilo. So the talent level was given to you on a silver platter all you needed was to be seated and enjoy. As i recall Al was more of a discipline coach while larry on the other hand let he's assistants do more of the coaching in games and practices. Even there other brother Cal was more of a coach then larry,he was more like he's older brother Al and also was driven by playing hard nose intensity defense without letting up. I remember that coach cal would get on this player everyday in practice and push him hard( it reminds me of a bobby Knight coaching story) and either as a team mate you didnt like to see that happen or on the other hand you cheered on coach cal because at that time the guy that he was yelling at was a sophomore starting point guard and you wanted to have he's position, I believe the soph did not like the way he was getting treated at practice on a daily basis, But looking back now i bet you every player wish they were in that position because there is an old saying that if the coach is not getting on you or bothering to talk to you then he has no interest in you. I also believe that cal helped him become a better leader mentally for he's last 2 years, and also a better defensive player especially if you are the 4 man on the hilo high press.
HEY BREW THIS ONE'S FOR YOU
BY THE WAY MONKEYBIZNESS WHO IS CHRIS McGauglin are you referring to punahou's chris McLachlin and if not my badPosted 1 year ago # -
Sorry yes it Chris McLachlin. my bad for the bad spelling it was late last night and I was tired.

Wow!!!, biifhawaii are you talking about the coach(Cal) who practiced harder then any player even though he was in his 40's. I heard braddah would dive on the ground for every loose ball, and is he da one created the rule at the Hilo High practices where there wasn't any out of bounds. One of my friends who played for Hilo High told me that coach was a little pupule when it came to hustle and heart. Is this true?

I think both Scanlan and Christensen are better than Shoji.
I think Darryl Gabriel has to be on that list for Punahou. Haenisch really didn't mature and get really good until after he graduated in my opinion.
For for Kalaheo, I think DC Daniels and Alama-Francis had better careers than Wilson. Wilson, while a very good player, only played one season for the Mustangs.

2Dhoop, great post! I forgot about Dwayne Bradley. He was a really extraordinary talent. Do you know if he went to college to play ball.

Your basketball knowledge so outstanding HF. Yes, everyone you mentioned were all great players. I also believe that Iolani's Dean Shimamoto and Ryan Hirata are worthy nominees, but my Mt Rushmore's Iolani was already full (4 Heads). Wanted to do a "Kamehameha Legends" but could only come up with Kahi Villa, Rockne Frietas and Louis Vargas. Also a "Maryknoll Legends" but could only come up with Garrett Gabriel and Kui Ostrowski. Any nominees HF? Your the brains of the bunch bully.
Braddah Brew, I believe Dwayne Bradley tried Chaminade but had trouble with their curriculum. Great NFL/Hoops Idea!

Mt Rushmore for me:
Iolani: Derrick Low, Cavan Scanlan, Chico Furtado, Kyle Pape, Kanoe Winchester.
Punahou: Brandon Brooks, Ia Saipaia, Jon Kamano, Dan Hale, Perry Lam
Kalaheo: Dwayne Bradley, Alika Smith, Julian Sensley, Scot Kato, Ikaika Alama Francis
Kamehameha: Louis Vargas, Kahi Villa, Blaine Gaison, Kekoa Ng, Rockne Freitas
Maryknoll: Kui Ostrowski, Garrett Gabriel, Phil Jackson, Kelly Grant, Tyler Tsukuzaki
University High: Morales Brothers, Kalia Mcgee, Brad Stewart, Randy Canencia

Maryknoll - Jimmy Lacteon
University High - James Williams, Leroy LutuPosted 1 year ago # -
Monkeybizness, I don't think you can have Perry Lam over Darryl Gabriel. It's not even close. Have you seen Darryl play? He is a multiple title winner and played legit Div 1 college ball.
As for Kamehameha, Kekoa Ng is a good player now, but he has really improved since he graduated high school. During high school he was just an okay player, not an all-time great.
Didn't Frances Fletcher go to Maryknoll? If so he starred at Chaminade I think. I would have him replace Kelly Grant. I know Coach Tony pretty well and followed Maryknoll during the 80's. Grant was a role player, not a star.

i like the fact that kalaheo and its star players get respect from you guys. makes me proud to wear the blue and orange. thanks.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Wouldn't it be fun to have seen all these players in their prime playing in a all star jamboree. If I had to pick a winner it would be the Kalaheo Mustangs.
Posted 1 year ago # -
What is you logic for Kalaheo being the best in their prime? I would pick Punahou.
Let's break it down. Hale won 3 titles along with Kamana and Gabriel. Brooks severely outplayed Sensley in the championship game and won the title, something that Sensley never did. Punahou beat Kalaheo twice that year.
Alika Smith, while good, never won a title.
I can't see how one school with maybe 2-3 state titles can beat a school with 10-11 titles if you took all of their greats and combined them in their prime during high school.

Yeah I never got to see Daryl Gabriel in his prime but I know he was good. What college did he go to? As for Kekoa Ng their team went 20-0 that year they won states and he was a big contributor on that team. Maybe not a great but he's better than alot of guys around now.

I think LMU, he played against Stockton. Koa runs with John Lane nowdays for the Chosen Few.

Hi Brew: Thank you for your query about Cal Manliguis born 1946, capt. Hilo High State champs 1964 [beat heavily-favored Chris MacLachlin Punahou squad that incl. football brain Norm Chow/nimble Charley Wedemeyer/Pal Eldridge/Art Wong]. In Al Manliguis'almost half-century of coaching [Al former star player under Hilo High coach Beans Afook/UH coaches Art Gallon-Al Saake], Al privately says that Al's 2 most intense competitors are Hisao Sato [Laupahoehoe High '57/NAIA all-star] & Al's baby brother Cal Manliguis. Email communicant Brew is correct about Cal Manliguis' demented [meant positively as incomprehensible competitive fire] attitude. On the other hand, go beyond Cal's attitude & break down/analyze the floor play -- Cal sticks like plaster in guarding Superman-strong Tim De Silva, who stands 3 inches taller than Cal. All Tim does is point up to have passer lob to Tim for the easy basket. Thus, instead of sticking to Tim like plaster, what ferocity-imbued Cal needs to do is intercept the pass via Cal's jumping frog legs/undiminished energy level [Cal is track miler titlist]. In this sense, Cal too obsessed w/mano a mano instead of playing smart/cognition. Al Manliguis' other favorite as unthinkably terminal competitor, Hisao Sato born 1939, took Hisao's title team to undreamed-of heights, because, by way of illustration, when Hisao's Laupahoehoe center said, "For what play hard, we goin' lose to Hilo High anyway!" --Hisao punched him in the jaw, & never again did Hisao's teammates talk like losers. Yeah, they cringed at Hisao's ferocity, but they had to respect Hisao's "whole is greater than sum of its parts" personification. Thank you for your incisive query, Brew!! Much aloha, --Curt P.S. To Frankie Gonazales, playmaker of our greatest-ever prep hoops team, St. Louis 1967, I hope you read this email, because you have the heart of a champion [never say never]!!

Curt, I love reading your post. You have knowledge of the game that I only would dream to have. It is really fun learning about the players of the past. After reading some of your post about Ah Chew Goo, I went and googled him, and found many good articles about him. I have spoken with a few people about him and he was one of my favorites, but now I think he has moved to my number 1 favorite player of all time from the Big Island. I hope one day I can meet him and get some pictures of him.

Hi Brew: You certainly can and may meet Ah Chew Goo, born 1918, will be 91 yrs. old soon, yet looks and acts like a retired 70 yr. old Merchant St. executive. Ah Chew doesn't have a college education but still is a man of the world/knowledgeable, so to speak. Look up Vincent Goo in the O`ahu phone directory & tell Vince that Curt told you to meet Ah Chew. Tell Vince to read your posts on this website to find out who you are, Brew. Much aloha, --Curt

I think you offer some great old-skool insight and stories. If there a reason why you choose not you use paragraphs? In critical writing you usually break up different thoughts into paragraphs. It allows your writing to flow smoother. Your voice stands out more. Your writing has more of an organized feel. It is easier to read. Just my 2 cents.

Hi HoopFanatic: I'll use paragraphs. Thank you for your suggestion. --Curt
