Imagine community colleges in hawaii had their own league. Like HCC Hurricanes , KCC Waves , LCC Lightnings ....etc....and all the teams are filled with ex former high school all state and all stars that never were recruited in the D1 level. wouldnt Chaminade , U. H , and Hpu would benefit from these and everyone would get to see all our local boys showcase their talent....just a thought !!!

    wildcats,

In the 70's, they did have their own teams. LCC was the "Leaping Lizzards"

I graduated from KCC, and if they had a team 20 years ago, I would have tried to play. I would support JC ball here in the islands, and I think many others would alos. Think about all the additional opportunities it would provide for the local kids. Although, today I think it should be limited to Hawaii HS graduates - no mainland ringers - purely local and that is coming from a pure Haole.

    it's called intramural games. LOL
This would be a great idea and if the state of the economy was better it may have a shot.

I think this would be a great idea. How can we get this going. This would give a lot of our local kids the opportunity to play at the next level and continue their education.

coached the last hawaii community college tikis team back in the late seventies.along with my brothers, won two state titles and came in second the last four years of the program. league consisted of leeward, windward, kapiolani, honolulu, kauai, maui and the tikis of hilo.had a nice little circuit, went to outer islands and played states on different islands every year. good fun and yes, local talent continued for alot of boys, some going on to bigger local and mainland programs! just ran out of kala. what we need in hawaii is a semi pro league with teams from different islands playing a mini circuit! with the right people and sponsors in place, its not that far off!

Hoopwn~ I remember watching. Isn't that about the time you guys moved back to the islands? Also Brothers Gang started around that time too. LOL. Hence the emergence of 6ft and Under league that they dominated. To me the Tikis and B/G were the same team.

@hoopwaiian, who would we need to talk to to get HCC started. Hopefully we can get interested parties together and discuss this wonderful opportunity. I know I could talk to Mayor Kenoi to get his support. If anyone could let me know how we can get this started, that would be great.

Brew maybe talking to UHH AD Dexter Irvin might be a good start. HCC has no athletic ties but they are still under the same administrative system. Andy Smith be of some help or one of our state representatives. One could ask Rockne Frietas before he leaves his chancellors position at HCC. How about the student body president. As stupid as that sounds, it may strike a cord on campus.

The B&G Club had a 19 and under league that was great for the high schoolers back when I was living in Hilo. I made all my players play against all the incoming studs to UH Hilo. If the high school kids can be involved, that would be even better!

as i mentioned earlier, state ran out of kala and with the current economy the way that it is today, its highly unlikely that money will be available for a local j.c. league, even with braddah mufi and duke in office. by the way, mufi use to fly over to hilo every week to play with my 35 and over mens team. pretty decent hooper! we took the title that year!

Thats why we need sponsors (a lot)....to get this thing started...a very good one is to check out the CLEARANCE CHING FOUNDATION...this guy is donating everywhere and buiding school gyms (ex: Maryknoll and St. Francis coming soon) also the weinberg , boys and girls club (tesoro)....also since all the community college are under University of hawaii maybe they can pilot this and it would definetly help the U.H. program. Its also good for in coming freshman that didnt qualify academically to play J.C. till they get all caught up like a prop 48 but still play in the commmunity college. someone please get this thing started....

Spoke to a friend who used to work for Mufi. My friend once dabbled with the idea of trying to start up the community college hoops league again. But, he gave it up. Hope one of you guys can start it up again. I would love to watch those games.
