Since everyone started posting in the Waiakea St Joes tourney post about this I figured I might as well just make a new topic.

BTW: I think St Joes plays Kam again at 6:30...not sure about the rest of the games...

who do you guys think wins in this pre-season rematch?

I was kinda disappointed as well that Waiakea didnt hold on to beat Kam so we could see them match up against St. Joes...you can thank Waiakea's lack of guard play, and terrible coaching for that...

100% agree with you obiwanginobili. They have only Libao to depend on as a guard and they have very, very poor coaching.

His very inexperienced, Has an attitude (shows it anyway), Think his doing a good job (but not) & He should take advice from his coaching staff which has more experience then him (but does'nt).

He had a kickout at the Kamehameha JV Tourney and that was'nt even his team & has 2 Techinicals I'm surprised he did'nt get disciplined yet from the AD at Waiakea (but if it was a player fast they would discipline) remember as a coach he also needs to set a good example.

Does'nt empress me at all and did not prove himself to be known as a good coach. Too bad if they only had a good or even descent coach... And need more guards.

Obi and Shaka why do you folks think that the Waiakea coach is such a bad coach. Just wondering how you folks measure coaching success. Is it wins and loses? Is it grades of your student athlete? Is it how well discplined your players are? Is it how little technicles the coach gets? Is it how much the player enjoys the coach? Is it a coach that makes practice easy and fun? Is it a coach that knows his x's and o's like the back of his hand? or a coach who spends countless hours preparing? Just wondering?

We all have to remember the coaches coach, but ultimately the players have to play the game. I feel if you have players with talent and basketball skills they should be able to excecute any offense or defense that is put forth in front of them. If you give pretty much any high school coach 10 of the most talented players in the BIIF they will win, no matter what offense or defense they play.

I watched Waiakea play and believe me its not all the coaches fault. He is not making the bad passes, missing easy shots, playing terrible D, missing free throws, not blocking out, etc. I'm not saying he is doing a steller job, but please don't only blame the coach. Don't get me wrong there are some players on Waiakea playing their butt off, doing a fine job.

    Mahalo!!!!

    Brew,
Does the team overachieve or underachieve relative to the talent they have. Regardless of won lost record. Did they play up to their potential or not. If you have the talent you should win. If you don't then can get your team compete.

    @XLR8

Thank you for explaining that for me. That is one of the main things that I look at when I am considering whether a coach is good or not good.

    @brew

I very rarely measure wins or losses as how good a coach is. One of the absolute last things I look for. The main thing I look for is whether or not a coach and his team over, or under achieve throughout a season, based on the various players, talent, and skill-set they have.

One thing I also look it is how the team responds to a Coach. For example, how well things are executed according to the game plan of the coach. This can be faulted by lack of talent or experience, but thats where my next thing comes in...

I also look at the basketball IQs of the coach, IE: strategy, offense, defense, and game time adjustments, etc. For example, the Waiakea vs Kam game, Coach Paul Lee of Waiakea had Isaak Janado, (should be one of the premier perimeter players in the league), play post the whole game. He is one of the few guards on their team that can handle the ball, make good decisions, hit outside shots, get to the foul line, and play defense due to his long frame (where he also could have matched up against Apele and caused a lot of problems because of his length and quickness..since this didnt happen Apele had around 25 points and almost 10 assists). To me this represents a low basketball IQ by the Coach, since Janado was obviously not used where he is most valuable to his team...

Those are just some of the few things the I look at to determine whether or not a Coach is "good" or "bad."

Obi, good points, but when Issack was playing down low I believe there was two gaurds in the game that definetely could not play down low, they would have gotten eaten alive down low by the big men of Kam. If you were the coach of Waiakea, how would your line up be and what would you recommend for offense and defensive strategy.

Although you may not think Paul has good basketball IQ, I believe he does. You don't play college basketball for four years and help coach in college without gaining some type of basketball IQ.

Waiakea has some talent, but with the loss of two key players it is going to be a tough year.

Kamehameha won with #32 being hurt most of the game. I think it was Carvalho.

The young Warriors are steppin up; rebounding, diving for loose balls and getting offensive put - backs!!!

Its pick your poison...stop Carvalho, Apele will beat you...and visa/versa, but now the crew of Soph's are stepping up!!!

St. Joe fought hard...came up short, shooting was not there tonight

I did wach that game and I was impressed with Kam. They seem to be very young starting 1 freshmen, 3 sophmores, and 1 junior. But they have that chemistry of playing with each other.

That Shaun Kagawa won't score 20+ points but he will play his heart out on Defense. That kid laid out and dive for a loose ball. That kind of kid has HEART.

XLR8 and obi, when you say play up or down their competition, do you mean the players or the coaches. Isn't it the players who have the responsibility to play up or play down to the competition. I know the coach needs to try and motivate, but if you are a player at the high school level I feel playing against good competition should be motivation enough. If you need the coach to motivate you, then somethings wrong, motivating a player is usually done at the P&R level. And if you look around the league Waiakea doesn't have as much talent as you think. They have 1 legitimate all star and a few potential all stars, while other teams such as Hilo, Keaau, and St. Joe have a few legimate all stars and many potential all stars. So, with that being said don't you think Waiakea is doing pretty good. They are in every game, not getting blown out, and they have the potential to put it together and have a fine season. I think Paul does need to work on many things as a young coach, but give him some credit for being out there working hard with the players at every practice. Remember respect is a two way street, and some of these players need to realize that. Some players may not agree with their coach, but he is the coach and he makes the rules and the decisions. Like I said before it is a team effort in all facets of the game coaches and players included.

    Saw the games lastnight...

St. Joseph vs Kamehameha exciting game went into overtime. Both teams very talented could of gone either way but Kamehameha pulled it off with the win.

Hilo vs Keaau Another exciting game stayed close for 3-1/2 quarters then Hilo pulled away to get the win and advance to the championship game.

Judging by the past 2 tournaments alot of even talent on the D1 Teams between Hilo, Keaau, Kamehameha (HI), Waiakea & Kealakehe. Honokaa (has the talent, the drive to win and with Meyer back coaching you can't count them out) & Pahoa (no comment did'nt see them play yet).

This will be a very exciting season!

I agree with you BIIFFan, Kam is starting to come around however, they have a ways to go...very talented but "YOUNG".

St. Joe vs Kam - could have gone eitherway...great game! It's St. Joe's year!!!! Kam, Building for next years run!

Hilo vs Keaau - To much weapons in Hilo, hard to mess up or look bad as a coach with that much talent on the team. Makes the job easy!

That looks about right on the predictions.

I'm hoping Kam can stay within 10pts.

    St. Joe by 8-10pts

    Waiakea by 5-8pts

Kona beat Kau...not sure what the score was..

Waiakea beat honokaa..they won by about 4..game was close...waiakea hit some shots and honokaa had a few turnovers.

St Joes beat keaau...had a big lead but keaau came back and st joes won by 1...the refs honestly blew keaau back into the game...and I rarely use this as an excuse but it was pretty bad...haku ishibashi got picked twice with 30 seconds left by Scanlan-leite, st joes scored 2 wide open lay ups off of it...Fairman hit the lead takin shot with 8 seconds left..that was the game...

At half time the scorr kam is up by 7 against Hilo.

    @brew

well what i mean by play up to the potential is about the team and how they compete based on their potential. and yes, this is the player's responsibility to bring all the got night in and night out, that should be a given, but what i am saying is how does the team do when it comes down to the last straw. meaning wins or losses, (over achieving or under-achieving). for example, if kau was to win 5 games this year, it would be a great season for them. sure they wouldnt make states, or even playoffs, but for them to compete and over achieve like such, that would be a great team accomplishment, and a great job by their coach. the coach can assist in this process by many different factors, IE: Xs and Os, using his players to their strengths and weaknesses, ability to make adjustments, etc.

also, you dont need all star players to win (IE: 1977 portland trailblazers), you need a team to win, and waiakea has it. a lot of those kids may not be as talented as other players are in the league, but they do have the skill-set, and the heart to work and get better as the season goes along. they do have 3 "stars" in mattos, janado, and libao. who are all more than capable to lead their team to a great season with their coach assisting them as well. even if you dont consider all of them all stars, it is still safe to say that they have a solid team.

and if you look at the other teams brew, who would you say is an all star from st. joes, and keaau?...just wondering...thanks for the input btw. i always appreciate to hear what other people think.

What a great game (in the second half) for Hilo!

Kam up 29-22 at half and pretty much in control....then the screws came loose on the 4-wheeler,,,boom, bang boom...stuck in a ditch! Couldn't get the ball past half court..turnover after turnover! Hilo Blows them out!

Hilo played hard-nose full-court press in the second half and wanted it more!!!!
Not handling the pressure showed Kam's "YOUTHFULNESS"...they (kam) pretty much had a JV (age) group out there (1 Fresh, 3 sophs and 1 Jr.) almost the entire way.
It was almost like a circus (to say the least). But hey, everybody goes through growing pains.

Don't get me wrong...I believe Hilo is a talented team and deserved to win, they are the odds on favorite to take the BIIF from what I see...

Just a bit surprised to see the Hilo coaches "keep a fullcourt press" on, with a 24 point lead, and 2 minutes left in the game...and yet, not all his players got to play...hmmmmm, could it be "running up the score?" Great call on the coaches part?..and we all know who runs or coaches the team.

    Kam played everyone by mid-3rd

Saw the Hilo vs Kamehameha Championship Game what a game stayed close for 3 quarters but then Kamehameha got out rebounded & cracked under Hilo press.

Saw the 3rd place game between St. Joseph & Keaau.
Keaau had it but 2 turnovers by Ishibashi cost them the game but it happens (only preseason learn from it & move on).

Well I think this was the last tournament going on in Hilo cause I know Waiakea travel to honolulu the moanalua tournament the 25th - 30th, I think Kamehameha has the Honokaa tournament the 21st - 23rd then go to the Merv Lopes Tournament in honolulu from the 24th - ?, And I think Hilo goes to one tournament in Maui?.
