I like the first team choices, and I agree with co-poy. I do not agree with all of the 2nd team choices.

Howzit BBFan, I'd rather keep that to myself. Don't want to upset anyone.

Instead congratulations to all the kids for a memorable 2009-2010 bball season.

I would have Switched Johnson to 1st Team and Buckner to 2nd Team. I felt that Malik was a Hustler on Defense (top man on the press) and was very Exciting Offensively (took it to the rim) with the Ball than his Teammate Deforest. As a Duo, both Compliment each others Game, Individually Malik was Better in my Opinion.

"when in rome". Deforest deserves 1st team no doubt, best post player in the state.

HF, is it Enos or Johnson you don't agree with?

Neither. Enos and Johnson are fine players. So are Skalman, Manuel, and Tulonghari.

    sweetbutta,

The 1st and 2nd Team All State are ILH Happy because the ILH finished 1,2, and 3 in the State Tournament and final season standings. With the exception of 'Iolani in Hilo at the St. Joseph's Tourney when they were injury laden and short-handed, the Top 3 ILH schools did not lose to an OIA or Neighbor Island team in the pre, regular, as well as post season. Period! That's why the teams were "ILH Happy" as you put it.

How was the all-tournament HHSAA D1 team chosen for the boys basketball tournament? And how does that selection differ from the way these Advertiser two teams were chosen?

Because the Advertiser All-State team, first and second, didn't include two of the five players so selected right after the tournament.

Be interesting to get someone else's take on this, as one seems to contradict the other. I mean, two out of five, or six when you add the Most Outstanding or co-POY.

    This isn't a rounding error, it's 33% or 40%.

The Advertiser All-State team is comprised of players that had a great year...sometimes, if not most, it is swayed towards players that had good state tournaments.

The HHSAA All-Tournament team is exactly what it states...players that had a good state tournament. It could be a player that did not play all year, then suddenly have a really good tournament. I've seen players make the all-tournament team and not even make their league all-star selection.

The All State team will always be comprised of 90% or in this case 100% Oahu players. It should be called the All Oahu team. Every year the All- State team is decided after the state tournament. Back in the day (long ago)each individual league had their all star team picked and announced by the State Tournament. The All State team was comprised of the players from those lists that got the most votes. If you mplayed in the State Tournament and played decently in the State Tornemant you would be a higher pick for the All State team.

Also, don't forget that ths All State and Fab 15 players are posted by the Oahu newspapers. The outer islands are never going to be fairly represented. They simply do not get the expose. Also, good players from some of the weaker teams will not get noticed. They will only get noticed if they scored 15 points or something. Unless, the newspapers poll every coach in the state- the all state team will comprise of ILH, Oahu or state tournament players that are seen by some of the coaches who will be polled.

If the players on the neighbor islands consistently performed better at states, maybe they would get recognized too. But, when you consistently lose early, it's hard to get recognized for being outstanding.

Let's look at this year. Didn't every neighbor island team in the Division 1 tournament (4 teams) lose their first game?

You say a kid will only get notice if they average 15 or something? So you think a kid who averages 14 points or less is stellar and all star caliber?

And no poll allows every coach to vote. I have yet to see any high school poll which allows every coach to vote.

NCAA Football, Basketball, and Baseball does not allow every coach to vote on their coach's poll.

I have been on this awesome site for quite some time now. There are some really great and informative posts here about Hawaii basketball but there are also some people here who like to think they know alot about Hawaii basketball. But its cool. I enjoy reading the posts regardless if I think its full of shit or not.

The all state teams should be the best players. No offense but you are telling me that enos, sam keik, skalman is the top players in the state. Of course not. They are good but when you have a player of the year not even make the all state team that's bogus. All this all state stuff is biased. but hey wat can I do I'm just a fan. It is wat it is.

Isn't it voted by the HHSAA Basketball Committee after the tournament is over?

sweetwhat skalman is the best point guard i saw his teams last summer never lost a game and he should have been on the all d-team. I would not want to say anything bad about any kids.Enos is good he's young.the kid Sam Keik I don't know.I'm not sure who you thought should be up there they must be good.

Skalman is the best point guard in the State. Period. Besides being the one of the best on ball defenders, he is the one that ran the offense for 'Iolani and controlled the ebb and flow of the game for them. He is a big reason why they won.
