I didn't even realize that! Damn Maybe the HHSAA needs to reevaluate how they seed teams! Four best in both Divisions not all League champions!!

I Agree that the ILH is the "Toughest" Division the State!

Yes the ILH is the toughest division in the State hands down. But maybe the most boring as well. Don't really want to see Punahou/Kamehameha play Iolani/Kahuku in the final. This will be like the 4th or 5th time they played each other all year. It will be a boring 42-41 game. Just my opinion. Great Basketball game with all the fundamentals and limited possesions but would have been nice to see something different. Hopefully it goes into overtime so the score might get into the 50s or 60s.

Howzit Hoopsdelight. I wouldn't call a 42-41 game boring. Just my opinion. Besides, I think, and this is my opinion, defense is stresssed a bit more in the ILH than it is in the OIA which could be a reason for it being a bit lower scoring. You of all people would attest to this since you have firsthand knowledge ofdefense in the ILH. Although, Iolani and Punahou both scored 70+ points last night against their respective opponents so I wouldn't say that ILH teams don't score points.

I don't understand...you say "great basketball with all the fundamentals" in one sentence but you call it "boring" in another. This cannot be the same guy that I have been coaching with and watching state tourney games with for a long time. Has it been that long since you've been coaching in the ILH? Or you're not going to watch because you guys are no longer in contention?

    See you later today brother.

ilh has the best teams, of coarse, they recruit, they play club ball year around, have the most MONEY, and alot kids go looking for these schools. punahou or kaiser no brainer right of coarse athletes and parents are going to select ilh schools its not a level playing field. it would be interesting if hawaii was like the mainland and the public educational system was up to par with the private schools, i bet there wouldnt be such a big difference in leagues, look at kahuku, kids almost have to stay because of pressures and distances, just think if mantai teo stayed they would have been unstoppable in football and maybe basketball. great points jones well played basketball is always good to see

Hi Obama. Hope your having a good Friday.

To add, I like to watch a fast paced basketball game with lots of scoring...but I can also appreciate a well-coached game with tenacious defense included as well. As a basketball coach I enjoy seeing the game "away from the basketball" so to speak. I like watching the action away from the action. Who's setting picks? Who's in correct helpside? Who's crashing the boards?

@BBJ- 100%!! Totally agree with you, I am the same way to. When i watch games live i like to be on the opposite side of bench so i can see what coaches are doing and when i watching on TV i am always looking away from the ball as much as possible. I have watch Kam play these past 2yrs along with there last 3 games and not only i am impress with Coach Nakanishi i am a big fan of he's coaching. Good luck to both teams in the Finals....... not really GO IMUA!!!

Yes Jones I believe that defense is stressed a bit more in the ILH. Yes Punahou and Iolani scored in the 70's last night which is great considering they blew out the competition. I did say that the game will be boring if say Punahou played Iolani or if Kamehameha played Iolani, only because they've played each other so many times this year that both teams have scouted each other and know each others tendencies inside and out. I'm not knocking the level of competition or the great defense, I'm just saying that things would have been more interesting or exciting if another team other than an all ILH were in it. I did watch the games, and so did the boys. I will continue to watch no matter whos playing because I love the game and I love watching High School Basketball. I'm happy for your son and his team for making the finals along with the Kamehameha team as well. It will be a great game for the faithful to watch.

Well keep away isnt basketball thats what i've seen Iolani play time and time again. Shot clock will be in the future of all these college bound kids and i think , no i know that this practice is useless. So why teach it, youre teaching kids how to steal. After all keep away isnt a sport is it?

Good perspective jwbb! A shot clock is desperately needed in Hawaii High School Basketball. This will actually give majority of all these kids the opportunity to evolve their game and raise it to a higher level offensively. Although Defense is primarily stressed at majority of the top Schools, I believe that offense isn't stressed enough. After watching the past few nights and observing certain scenarios for some teams. I believe that they are more willing to walk the ball up the court pass the ball 15 to 20 times take a tough shot hoping for it to go in. Limited possesions with less opportunities for some. I've seen many opportunities for fastbreak points get minimized because of the players unwillingness to make a mistake by making an outlet pass or lead pass for a layup. Not that its bad to play that way. But isn't it safe to say that when you decide to play basketball at an early age, the first thing you get thought is how to shoot. Maybe dribble for some people, but isn't that what basketball is. Shoot. As a kid isn't that what you want to do? Isn't that what every NBA and College player thrive on. Isn't that why there's a shot clock in those leagues as well as some high school leagues. Thats to promote offense and give your defense a shot of controlling the possession and forcing the opposition to take a bad shot.

Other than that what a great game tonight. Two great teams laying it out on the line. Once again great job to Iolani and their staff for an exciting victory. Couldn't have been scripted any better. Congrats also to Kamehameha and their staff for the road traveled and grit to make it back to the title game. My hats off to them. Hopefully next year will be just as great as this year. Peace out gang have a good one.

Keep away isn't basketball? What??? Yes it is. You're trying to keep the ball away from your opponent! Running clock is definitley a basketball strategy as well as all timed sports. Regardless, Iolani spread the court, moved the ball and was very patient in their offense while still looking to attack.

Hoopsdelight, how can you say offense isn't stressed enough??? Heck, I think offense is stressed more than defense. When was there ever a basketball defensive clinic? Kalakaua basketball clinic is 100% offensive skills. Honestly, I think defense isn't stressed enough to these young kids.

Defense isn't about glamour. Its all about selflessness. Its about grit. Its about toughness. You could easily find more offensive minded players than players who make a true commitment to playing hard-nosed, tenacious defense.

Iolani and Kamehameha played a great game. Both teams have stars in Chu and Christensen and a good supporting cast. Great defensive battle. Punahou had the deepest talent, but with the heart of defense of Crabb and Cassiday fighting injuries, limited. Moanalua was an exciting team, loaded offensively, but were not solid defensively. Kahuku had a tall team, and Akina is a good shooter, it doesn't hurt that the coach (father) calls shooting plays for him. Mililani is athletic, can run.

Defense wins games and Iolani prevailed. Their deep bench and platoon system wore out Kamehameha. The referees blew a good championship game, maybe they were reading this site.

At last count, there were 26 schools in the ILH. They range from tiny Christian Schools to special needs schools to schools with a specific educational philosophy.

You've got the Waldorf school based on the unique educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.

You've got ASSETS, founded primarily for the special needs of the children of soldiers in the Armed Services.

You've got Pacific Buddhist, Hawaiian Mission and Christian Academy. No partridge in a pear tree as far as I know.

The only thing they don't have is a Muslim school or a school for the blind-- yet.

When most people talk about ILH superiority, they are talking about Punahou, Kamehameha, Iolani and sometimes St. Louis.

We like to talk in stereotypes and generalities. "The ILH is this," "The ILH is that." When in truth, the ILH is diverse beyond what most people can contemplate. For the vast majority of "ILH" schools, athletic participation is a means to an end-- a way to reinforce life lessons based upon the values of the educational institution.

Of course the ILH has the flexibility to be much more diverse. First of all the private schools are accredited by different accreditation governing bodies. So each school can develop a much more diverse academic plan to serve the type of population it chooses.

The DOE on the other hand is sanctioned and accredited all the same. They are allocated money based on the weighted-student formula. They use the same standards and teaching principles which are often mandated by federal standards which causes many DOE schools to be similar is philosophy and methodology. It is not like the Public School system does not want to be as diverse as the ILH, they just cannot.

There are so many more public schools. If there was no consistency, it would be far worse than it already is.

Hoop, in no way was my post an indictment on public schools. It was intended to illustrate what we mean when we make generalizations like, "The ILH is..."

The charter school concept is long overdue. Instead of building bigger and bigger schools, we should be building smaller ones.

I'm frustrated and flabbergasted at State of Hawaii "red tape" that won't allow donated work and labor to improve and maintain public school facilities. It takes 12 documents in triplicate to change a lightbulb.

It's not that the public schools don't have visionary leadership, it's that the system in which they operate is oppressive. Students pay the price.
