Some names that are mentioned as finalists for the vacant Iolani girls basketball coach:

-Steve Hathaway, ex-Maryknoll boys interim head coach.
-George Weeks, current Kalani girls coach and Iolani alumni.
-Someone from Punahou. Wow! Wait til Darth Vader hears about someone leaving the Dark Side.
-Jim Bolla, he rescinded his application when someone reminded him that Jamie Smith is graduating.
    -Just kidding about Jim Bolla.

I heard Weeks has the inside track....As for the Punahou guy, its a former boys head coach........

If it came down to it and all of these guys were all qualified the same, I would go with the alumni. Just because.

That is a good point, but they coaches are not equal. I would go with the Punahou guy, has a proven record, several state titles, previous coaching history at Iolani, and Doc was his assistant many years back.

Not sure where you got your info hoopfanatic but word from the dark side is that the punahou "guy" is former player and coach Marlene Zeug - who is obviously not a guy. Good one though. I'm sure the puns were really trying hard to figure out who you were talking about.

bballfan69, how do you think Hathaway would do as a girls coach? Also, you think he'd be a good fit at Iolani?

ILHFan, I think that he would do just fine. I talked to some people who said he has girls coaching experience, but it is only at the lower levels. He took a not so good Maryknoll team and got them to play at a high level. Now yes they only won a few games, but they were more competitive than they have been in recent years. I dont know how he would fit in at Iolani, dont really know him that well. I have talked to him and he knows his basketball. Like I said before about him, he coaches with a lot of energy on the sidelines. How that would work at Iolani, I am not sure. But you have to admit that he did do a good job of turning Herring around a little, whether you like Herring or not you have to admit that. And now Herring has a scholarship to play college ball so he must have done something right. So coaching wise I think that he would be fine.

If George Weeks can bring his winning program, and is an alumni, sounds ideal for the school and returning players.

Rumor out of Iolani is that they hired the woman. My source says that is one of the main reasons for hiring her. Not that she might not turn out to be a good coach, but that they wanted a woman.

69, I'm sure this woman has a resume. Wouldn't they hire on your credentials not gender? Safe to assume she was what they were looking for.

Marlene Zeug...don't know what level she has coached here. I believe she played that she played for Colgate College. Kyla Evers may be an assistant...we'll see.

hoopsitiz, I am not saying that she doesnt have credentials. So dont take what I wrote as my words. What my person at the school said is that they wanted a female coach. I am not saying, nor is my source saying that she cant coach. I am sure that she can. But what I was told is that the other two were just as qualified, but they wanted to go with a female coach. She was very qualified so dont think that is what I am saying. I hope that she does a great job.

Interesting choice. I didnt think she had as much experience as the other two. Last i remember she coached jv at Punahou a few years ago.

I don't know much about her local experience coaching basketball. Majority of her experience could be in the mainland. Who knows...

She coached at Punahou in the early 2000's at JV. She has some problems there. I believe she coached with Taylor at Varsity in the 02 season which was her last one there are Punahou. I don't recall her ever winning the ILH title at the lower levels.

So now with all that been said, did they make the right choice? It seems to us, the basketball minds of the islands, that they didn't. And who can argue with us. I think that schools should start letting some of us veterans be on their search boards. We know more about the game than they do. By the way, I just noticed that I am a veteran. One day if you "Members" work hard, you can be like Jones and myself, "VETERANS". Maybe we will get together and hold a camp on basketball blogging. And we can get Shaka and some others to run some stations for us. What you think about that JONES?

So Iolani chose Marlene Zeug over George Weeks for the girls varsity head coach. I wonder who she will ask to be her assistants. This is a very odd choice. Word on the street was she had some huge problems when she was last at Punahou.

Problems? Wow...what kind of problems? Her first assistant will be Glenn Young.

Hopefully Coach Young will mentor her and have a calming effect on her. Often at Punahou she let her temper get the best of her which sometimes led her to make some poor decisions on the court which have nothing to do with coaching basketball. I don't want to air dirty laundry Jones, but it wasn't in the best interest of the kids. Hopefully she will start a new chapter and the kids at Iolani will benefit.
