To all interested basketball players...Dennis Agena and his staff are coming back to Hilo to run another Kalakaua Clinic but this time there is a new twist!

We are looking for players, boys and girls, ages as low as 6 years of age up to high school seniors or even college hopefuls. The venue will be at Keaaukaha gym in a joint co-operative agreement with thw Warriors and the Parks and Recreations Department.

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN BALL!! If you do not bring your own ball, you may not be able to participate. We may have a few basketballs but these are old and may not be as round as necessary. The basketballs that will be brought by the clinic players will be used by the clinic players. They will need the balls for their demonstrations. In the past they have given up their basketballs and were unable to demonstrate. BRING YOUR OWN BASKETBALLS PLEASE!!

We will do a joint session on Friday, September 3rd, at 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. The sessions will be split on 9/4/10 and 9/5/10 when the younger groups (ages 6-11) will attend the clinic in the mornings starting at 8:00 AM until 11:30 AM or 12:00 PM and the older players (ages 12 and up) will be starting at 12:30 PM until 4:30 PM. Times are subject to changes due to the number of participants.

The significant change happens on Monday, 9/6/10 from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. We will have just the older players utilize the skills that were taught during the first 3 days in simulated game exercises so they will be able to work on their skills in actual game situations which will include controlled scrimmages. This is the first time Coach Agena will have done anything like this to promote players of our future while helping players to acquire higher basketball knowledge under actual playing conditions.

Participation is needed from the Hilo and Big Island players that are able to attend. Coach Agena has appreciated the hard work from the neighbor island players and would like to ask Hilo to be the first to use a 4-day program. We believe this extra day will bridge the gap of drills learned to the actual game experience that will help players achieve their own personal goals in basketball.

If there are any questions, you may call me at (808) 936-5579 and I will answer them as soon as I can. A reminder...time are subject to change. Sign up instructions were posted in your local papers and I believe the P & R being involved will also have the sign-ups as well. I look forward to all the participants attending!

Some of us only read the paper to see Hi-Low's jokes and we didn't get a chance to see the sign up instructions.

If there a sign-up fee? Is there a cap as well on how many kids you guys are willing to take?

Here's what I got, including the clinic fee of $60:

The Kalakaua Clinic featuring coach Dennis Agena will be held Labor Day weekend in Hilo. This year the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island and the County of Hawai?i Parks & Recreation will team up to bring in the veteran coach and clinician along with his coaches and student-athletes to put on their annual clinic for the Big Island.
The clinic will be held Friday through Monday, Sept. 3-6 at Kawanankoa Gym in Keaukaha. For the first time, the clinic will offer an additional day of competition.
The clinic will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Times may vary depending on the age group and number of participants.
Cost is $60 and includes a T-shirt and all instruction.
Agena has instructed and guided some of the outstanding talent coming from Hawai?i, like Derrick Low from Iolani and Washington State University and Shauna Kuehu from Punahou and the University of Hawai?i.
Agena specializes in a weekly clinic to develop young talent on Oahu and will bring his coaches and student-athletes to duplicate the same experience again for Big Island talent.
This year, Agena will add another day to the clinic as a day of competition for the older participants to apply their skills learned in the clinic to real game situations.
“It should prove to be another great experience for all involved, good fun and competition at all levels,” said local clinic spokesman Kalani Silva.
Each participant is reminded to bring his or her own basketball to the clinic. Registration and waiver forms are available at Sports Line, County of Hawai?i Parks & Recreation, and all Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Island locations.
For more information, call Silva at 557-9001.

Thanks Hi-Low. Sorry to all but my computer was down and I was traveling to Kona and Back to Oahu. Having trouble with our RoadRunner but so be it.

Along with B&G, the P&R will be involved so we can all benefit on gym use and clinic instructions from one of the best in the state, Coach Dennis Agena. Both Ganon Baker and Jason Wright (Pro Basketball Trainers) have stated how well the players perform under Coach Agena's basketball clinic instructional classes. He has worked with recent players like Derrick Low, Kyle Pape, Taylor Mounts, Both Kuehu sisters, Kainoa Chu (reigning POY), Trevyn Tulongari, Derby Enos, Gabriel Vega, Lori Yamashita, Anuhea Wall, Keisha Kanekoa just to name a few.

The cost will remain at $60 even with the extra day! This extra day makes things tight for traveling which includes student instructors having to leave school and having little time for preparation for the following week of classes. This extra day will be significant. It will determine future clinics for the neighbor islands and allow for players to express what they have learned in a very short time.

The age (6 years and up) is also significant. Coach Agena's clinics start at 9 years and up so this is a great way for Hilo and other Big Islanders to get a head start on all of the ball handling drills.

We would appreciate all coaches to attend so that further reinforcement training can be done with a seemless effort. I will be at the clinic as well and any questions regarding drills or ball handling that is promoted by the clinic, I will answer honestly. There are no secrets, magic pills or potions that will make a player better. Just hard work! For all of the bloggers who commented on PGU, you can talk to me about that in person as well. If there is one statement that engulfs our beliefs as coaches, it is this; WE WANT TO GET AS MANY PLAYERS OF THESE ROCKS!" Experience life and feel what a small fish in a big pond is really like then expand yourself beyond your goals.

Let me know if I can help. Also, my number is (808) 936-5579 if my computer is down again.

We just got back from Maui (Seabury Hall) and the clinic was populated with more than 100 players. Dylan King and BJ Vega from Maui High highlighted the clinic with high flying moves.

The Seabury Hall team did not provide much players and we hope to rectify that via scheduling or something else next time. Our host, Phillip Tong was very gracious and worked very hard to provide all the necessities for both players and coaching staff members to run a successful clinic.

Coach Agena was at his best with Coach Miles and Coach Rey Dulan. The student instructors made new friends and rekindled their annual acquaintances with the returning players.

Maui would like to do two clinics per year at Seabury and Baldwin is asking for a clinic as well. Hilo has two slots but we are only using one this year and Honokaa (via HPA) will have one done in October. Kauai is already scheduled for two clinics per year and are looking to do a third. Molokai has one slot during the year and that concludes the island travel. Coach Agena also flies to Cali to do a 4-day girls clinic for one of the high schools and has been asked to do more.

Nothng is done through advertisements from Coach Agena. Everything is by "word of mouth" and he has been working overtime. I went through many channels to find ways to attend his clinics when my team of youngsters were 9 or 10 years of age only to find he had a 4-year waiting list. For all the clinics state wide, keep up the enrollment! If numbers start to dwindle it may come to just that...numbers. At night Coach suffers from aches and pains and sometimes cramps. I see this happen all the time but he wants to work for the young student athletes.

We hope to see as good of a turn out in Hilo on September 3,4,5 and 6.

Who looks good in Maui in the upcoming year. Seabury Hall and Baldwin or are ther other teams/players looking better?

Baldwin players did not show so I don't know about them. Seabury returns King. Maui High looks good. King K is young but has Bill at the helm. This is going to be an interesting season. I'll call one of the coaches on Maui to get a better answer.

Thank you, I will talk to some of the coaches I know over there to see who is the team that is favored.

    @ Dodger

Let's see if your coaches agree with mine or maybe they are the same ones.

D1 Boys; Lahaina is favored due to depth and quickness. They have two very good guards. Baldwin is very young but Coach Gushigan has proved he can take young teams to the state tourney. Maui High has Vega and may be the best guard on Maui but will play a 4 or 5 position due to a lack of height. Maui is young and very athletic. Kamehameha has talent to go back to states but may need stronger depth and King kekaulike is very young but will play defense under Coach Bill.

D2 Boys; Seabury is Tall and returns Dylan King. Dylan has spent his summer working on his game and playing with Hawaii Select. The starting five may all be 6'0 plus! Molokai has experienced guard play from returning state players. Lanai is sloted as possible 3rd but I do not have anything on them.

D1 Girls; Lahaina returns an experienced squad with Viela and are the heavys on Maui. Baldwin is rebuilding but may have enough to seed second due to coaching staff. King kekaulike is third led by Princess Lauvao. Talented but coaches say their focus will be the key to success.

D2 Girls; Molokai with Adolpho. Need we say more? May be the best 5 player in the entire girls
's divisions. Kalei played like the beast she is up in Oregon and Seattle. Seabury Hall is led by PG Trina Valencia, sophomore with good handles and Taylor Rudrow. The Hall may lack depth but Seabury has enough to challege Molokai so D2 girls will be exciting.

Good Luck Maui. Hope to see you all next year at Seabury Hall!

Great report on Maui. The coaches and AD's that I have talked to agree with you on the girls side. Molokai could win states and Lahaina is the class of the DI with Viera at guard and the system that they run, but will not have enough height or depth to win it all again. The rest of the league is a step behind these teams with Baldwin and SH being the best of the rest.

The boys side DII is only strong with Seabury Hall. King and Pagano, who is coming off a torn ACL, will led the team, with two other guards that are quick and very defense minded, will be the team to beat. Molokai and Lanai have new coaches and are a level behind SH. St. Anthony has a good coach but needs players.

The DI is up for grabs. Kamehameha lost everyone, King K is young, Baldwin will depend if the two big boys come out from football, Maui is Vega, and Lahaina has two guards, Williams and Rickhard, that are very good, but their best player can be their center, however they have a new coach.

Maui will be exciting but look for Molokai and Lahaina in the girls, and SH and Lahaina in the boys.

If anyone has a chance, please go up to Agena and ask him how many freethrows he made out of 200.

Coach Brian are you coming to Hilo for the Agena clinic, and is your boy coming too. Hope so because your boy is a great example for the young ones on how to play the game. I have watched him improve his game through the years, and all his hard work has paid off. Every time I see him play, he plays the game with intensity and fire which I love. Keep up the great work and keep us posted on his progress.

    Aloha

Yes we will be back. I wouldn't miss it! Varrick does work hard with some nudges from me as Ed pointed out for Kainoa. He had a setback though. His quad muscles shut down after an injury sustained in a game in Hilo and it went un-noticed for a year. He is in rehab but will be able to participate.

I didn't get to see your girl play but she must still be quick. Noah looked good at PGU last season. I'm on Oahu and Randy has his hands full. You may have to run a PGU for your son, Kaaihue and Mattos, all formidable players to work with for future HoopDreams!

Along with nudges, I found the "Shock & Awe" approach, and my personal favorite, the "Thunder & Lightning" approach to be most successful!

Aloha Uncle Brian! Wanted more info on the Agena Clinic. Can I sign my boys up for the clinic at the Gym on Friday? Have inquired in the Kona area on how to get registration forms and no one even the staff at the Kona Gym are aware of it. Appreciate your help and passion for the greatest game on earth. I don't know who you are but I shouldn't help you at ALL with that ducky bluetail comment!!!

You may sign up on Friday night without any extra fee. Please call the Boy's and Girl's Club and leave a message with your phone contact, ages and number of participants that are attending ASAP. We want to make sure your players get shirts for the clinic.

If you run into any problems, call me directly at (808) 936-5579 and I'll make sure you get what you need completed. Go down to the P&R office at the Kailua Gym to get the participation forms which needs to be signed by the player AND PARENT! This form is identical to what we will be using in Hilo. You can do the registration form at Keaukaha Gym in Hilo.

    BRING YOUR OWN BASKETBALLS PLEASE!!

Look forward to seeing everyone, even duckies!

For those attending the Kalakau Clinic in Hilo, welcome. For those deciding or waiting to see if your friend's are attending, your application is necessary now! If you delay further you may not receive a Kalakaua shirt. We will order extra sizes but that's it! Call the B&G to make sure.
