    Aloha Bill,

Just wanted to know if you were aware of The Boys & Girls 2010 Big Island High School All Star Basketball CLassics happenning this weekend friday 3/12/2010 (girls) & saturday 3/13/2010 (boys) East vs West. Maybe can get a picture of the coaches, teams with players names & recognition for being selected and playing in this event (I think this will be the 1st annual) don't know but maybe call George Kalani Silva at the Boys & Girls Club Of The Big Island he probably could give you more information.

I think this is an honor for these selected players to be chosen to play in and show the multiples of talents that the Big Island has to offer from the east side to the west side...
...With all these talented players playing together and playing against each other what an enjoyable showcase it should be.

Just wanted to give you a heads up. I always read it on Hawaii Hoops but never saw it advertised.

    Mahalo,
    Shaka6 (with the sign)

Boys and Girls Club charge each student a $1.00 a year to be a part of their program. If a gym can be found, refs located, plan given to Boys and Girls Club, they are open to ideas. Hoop Fanatic- You have the connections for gym, etc.

Boys & Girls Club charges $10 a year. Their core programs are designed to cultivate and nurture children from disadvantaged cirumstances as well. How about developing those who don't get a chance to play sports because their parents can't afford uniforms, dues, transportation. Utilize Boys & Girls Club for what it's really there for. We have enough "showcase" programs. Bill Cosby and Denzel Washington credit Boys & Girls Clubs for reaching out to their communities in need of strong effective role models.

I think I read in a post earlier regarding a "system". Well, that doesn't only pertain to defense/offense plays....get it!

@BREW- Was a member of the BOY'S CLUB back in the day,During those days they had a few camping trips outing per year. Only 1-5 people would sign up. When they change to the BOY'S AND GIRLS CLUB OF HILO,for somewhat reason over 100 kids sign up every outing....... lol

HoopDreams basketball Org. is the sponsor of this event. The tie-in with Boys and Girls club is the use of the gym along with a few positive workshops for the players. There also is the exposure for the Club to build it's membership.
I do agree that the club is a multipurpose organization that will enrich our children. And if this a way of doing it....then why not?

Brew, if i missed a few things could you help out and be more detailed. Thanks.

Brew & Shaka6 -- I spoke with Kalani Silva this afternoon and he told me he would send over the boys and girls team rosters for the all-star games. He did last night and I'll try to run them on Thursday.

The two girls games -- Rising Stars and Senior Game -- will be played Friday night at Hilo Civic. The young players start at 5 p.m. and the older ladies at 6:30 p.m. Double check the Trib in the morning, since I ran a short story on the games plus a photo of Kamie Imai.

The two boys games will be played at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hilo Civic. That's after a busy day for the players who'll attend some workshops at the Boys & Girls Club in Hilo.

Not too sure what type of crowd will show up, but the games should be fun. I'll try to go each night.

    That's the scoops for now.

P.S. On another note, the BIIF boys volleyball season opened tonight and Pahoa swept Ke Ana La'ahana in 3 sets, 25-6, 25-13, 25-16. There are several players on the Daggers roster who were on the school's Division II basketball team -- including Isaiah Ekau, John Byrd, Nick Fisher, Hamlet Walsh and Chris Mendonza to name most of them.

The Daggers' goal this season -- to win a state D-II crown in volleyball. Hilo and Pahoa could be the top two D-II volleyball teams on the Big Island this year.

Can you imagine if Pahoa pulled off the two-peat in winning the state in basketball and volleyball. Wow, what a year for the Daggers.

And, of course, who is leading the way? It's Ekau with that unbelievable 40-inch vertical!

Wassup Bill....give some props to Kohala....last year for Volleyball we were in the Championship game??? We never got credit last year either.

Another thing we came in 2nd and for the BIIF picks we had 1 player (Brandon Bautista) who made 1st team.....and no one even on 2nd team???? How da hell?

But we should have a good season too!!! Here we go again all the respect for the east and none for the West....ALL Good I like being the under dog...lol

Mahalo plenty Bill...Hope you can make the games.

Wow what's the odds if Pahoa win D-2 States for volleyball too and looking at their roster the odds is in there favor but will see. Good luck! Pahoa.

Yeh Ekau is an awesome athlete. What! 40-inch vertical gotta see that.

@OldG...building membeship is an excuse. Gym time is a stretch, there is an exsisting "lagitimate" BB program within Boys & Girls Club. Why are they not included or revived or consisdered as needing help with that program. In other words, why bring in the Warrior Association to be umbrellaed under BGCBI? They (Hoops Dreams) need BGCBI programs to meet their grant requirement and using BGCBI programs as a tool to achieve that. P&R is tired of their crap! I've been a member of the BB community long enough to NOT be blind sided. I happen to know A LOT of people who know, for a fact, that there are issues with this "partnership". Trust me, let the boat start sinking. ETHICS!! Pure ETHICS!!

I know I'm coming off pretty harsh but it upsets me to see a non-profit who has faught to win back the trust of it's community to be manipulated and used in such a way and not benefit from this all star event. They are not even recognized properly in the Baseball RBI league. Yes, Nobu Yamauchi was the founder but it's a BGCBI program. It has it's own separate board which shouldn't be. Sad, very sad. If the head of the Boys & Girls Club RBI League saw the rosters of these teams they would flip and it would maybe even shut the league down. A certain % of players need to be below a certain income bracket. When politics get in the way the kids loose! My family has been a big part of the Boys & Girls club in the mainland that's why I know how it SHOULD be.

@ cbreezeu.. I agree with your passion and your points are well taken. But don't bash me for it. If the partners are at odds with the leadership now then let them deal with it. The Kings program is runned by good people. And my son has been a part of that program mind you. The Victors have done a lot for these children and have taken on a huge responsibility. And I say the same about Brew and the rest if these people.
RBI program was started with the HBGC and has morphed into something else. You may want take that up with Wayne Yamauchi. But I'll speak for the RBI girls team...They're basically trying to finance their own cause And, and with the help of UH Hilo have been given an opportunity to practice at a top facility here in the eastside.
If you're implying that special attention is being given to RBI and the Warriors orgs....then bring up to the proper admin people.
Let's see how this game turns out first. Lets see hiw the HBGC benefits from this. Then if it doesn't work out you can continue with your tirade. If it turns out positive I say good for everyone.
lastly, HBGC has had it share of bad management, funding and support. I hope that Mr Silva serves its membership well and proves to a few of his detractors that he's the right person for our kamalili.
( i'm independant and have no memebership with Warriors or RBI.)

    @ cbreeze,

I also respect your opinion and I can understand why you feel that way...but honestly the points that OldG brought up are valid as well.

I was appalled by your last comment in your first blog above, its obviously the under-minding point that stood out as being negative (let the boat start sinking)...its a bit contradicting. Why initially bash it when 1) you really don't know the infrastructure or litigation that went on "prior" to these particular organizations that you mentioned, being some-what partners (even that we don't know)...
In addition, 2)I also was aware of HBGC and its share of bad management, funding and support in the past, with that said, I really don't feel that Mr. Silva would jeopardize his occupation (let alone his or HBGC's integrity) on trying to keep HBGC running and being more and more stronger / self-sufficient within this community.
Like you mentioned, "your family has been a big part of the Boys & Girls club in the mainland"...and I applaud you for that.
sorry to say bro...but that's exactly it, THE MAINLAND.
Some people try to do good, to make an impact (positive impact) in our community, we need to keep an open mind, our community, island and state keeps evolving, so I think sometimes we need to step outside the box (not saying they are but, everything happens for a reason)...don't knock-it-till-you-try-it...Give it a chance!

We recently discussed these kinds of matters OldG...there's always gonna be different opinions~ what ever you, me or anyone for that matter wants to call it: Hatr's, fak'rs , tak'rs or consti-patr's its always gonna present itself in many facets or chameleon colors "so to speak"...drive on!

C-Brz.....There was a group of us who wanted to repair the facility.....POOL, SCOREBOARDS, FIELD, ETC. Were you aware the we got shut down? Free labor! I have taken this up the the county of Hi in regards to Carvalho park as well. I lobbied for more help from the community, I have spoke with a small group of peers but we cannot seem to make head way. Now HBGC does look a lot better. Each program that uses the facilities should also do some community service there. If we're talking about gym time~ let's get a schedule time for each program. Shall I say this: May the Kings organization should have first stake and let the rest fall in. Then during the following season rotate it.
All I'm saying is that there are ways to be pono about this and "HANA HANA" together.
I just wanted to let you know that I know where you're coming from. Come talk to me. My son play ball every weekend there. Who know's? maybe I coached with you before.....
    All Pono All the time!

We are doing it for the kids!!! If anyone wants to speak with me about Hoop Dreams, just approach me and talk to me. We are more than willing to talk and see what we can do for you and your kids. We have started with a few travel teams and eventually want to work our way down to the younger age groups, but in order to do that we need much more help with volunteers. It is a big task to coordinate these travel teams and raise the funds for them to travel. We have had a few businesses donate money, but for the most part we have fundraised on our own. Please don't assume that the boys and girls club is pouring out money for us, that is far from the truth. Hoop Dreams has not yet used the gym once for a practice. We have recently asked for some gym time if it is possible, but we would not want to take away any gym time from existing programs, that is not what we are about. We will also make everyone who is on the Hoop Dreams travel team become a member of the Boys and Girls Club.

We will be putting on some camps for the youth in the near future, which I hope can benefit whoever can attend.

Thanks and I hope this helps people understand what we are trying to do.

To all~ I apologize for coming off so strongly. I really hope (from the heart) that this is a beginning of a positive thing for all, first and foremost, the kids. No bashing intended just lots of frustration. There are things that I care not to share here and I meant to chose my words very carefully. I will not use names of individuals or organizations accept for Boys & Girls Club Big Island, which I strongly support. I applaud you Brew for your passion for the kids and your attempt to improve the standards of athletics here on the big island and anyone else who shares that same passion. I agree, I shouldn't have been so negative. That's the trouble with this venue, when in the heat of the moment your emotions are at your fingertips. But truly, if I offended anyone I apologize. But, I stand firm on my thoughts and you don't have to agree. My personal opinion of those involved with putting this together should not be shared here as most of you are not as annonymous as you think. lol. Anyway, Big Ups to those who made the All Star teams, very well deserved!! Play hard, have fun!!
