The Incident At The Civic (ejection of a player):

Everyone only knows you were talking about Mattos. The situation did get out of hand for Mattos. As a reporter if you did more research and find out more details of the situation you would of known that he was trying to be a peacemaker between Libao & Shintani telling them to cool down & play the game, And that is when Shintani hit mattos hand down and told Mattos eh bra no "fu..ing touch me, And that's when Mattos went Ballistic...
...There is just some people that don't hide there emotions when there upset (so he ends up looking like the bad guy), And a person that can only tolerate so much and takes a long time before they calm down that is just human nature. I know for a fact his not the first, He won't be the last and I saw way worse then this happen in BIIF Basketball & Other High School Sports.

    Regarding Ref's/Coaches/Spectators:

BIIF refs are going to be BIIF refs, They won't change, They will continue to ref the way they do because of the lack of "professionalism" seminars/classes offered to them. So we have to deal with what we have.

Coaches are fun to watch their very into the game, Dramatic, Very compatible with each other, Emotional and even sometimes takes it personal. But they do know there limits & What the consequences are.

Spectators are even more fun to watch. They are very into the game and really emotional especially if they have a son/daughter playing. This is human nature - You have some that gets out of hand, Some that only claps, Some that only nods there heads when making a basket or an awesome play that counts and Some that makes gesture's. Theres all different types of fans, spectators, viewers or whatever you might call them But they are soul supporters of there kid and the school that they are attending (It's called school pride).

From what I heard from my elders high school sports today has toned down alot and nothing compare to what it was before. They said you had crowds of players/students and sometimes even parents/spectators after the games wanting to scrap and even had scrap on the court during the game.

So to me in overall I think high school sports/officiating/coaches/spectators is ok, It's all a reaction to human nature and like I said there is consequences for coaches/players/spectators, Meanning you get out of hand as a coach/player you will have technicals or be ejected, And as spectators you get out of control they can ban you from games then you won't be able to see your son/daughter/cousin/neice/nephew/brother/sister/friendplay and that would suck.

Wow, true in so many ways shaka!!!

But honestly,,, that's the exact version I heard regarding what happened with Chris Mattos (peacemaker). Very unfortunate incident.

In addition (i don't intend or want to bring up any "ill feelings" towards the other game that night between - St. Joe vs Kamehamaha) but thats the same view I got with Lanaki Apele (peacemaker).

Bashing these kids OR ANY OTHER athlete will not make the situation any better for them, coaches or fans!

But what do I know...I can't even sit still myself at games!!! lol

...Bill has put his magic as a player in his writings.. Simply, the boy can write!! Today's article was another example of Bill seeing the game through the "big picture lens". Being accountable means "accounting" for our actions.. this takes tremendous self-descipline and little bit humality.. yet it must be done to ensure we don't lose site of why our kids play basketball..

...I like how Bill shared the responsibility amongst all parties--players, coaches, refs, fans, and parents.. i'd like to add youth coaches as well, since they set the tone for how players should respond to unfavorable calls during the game.. when i was coaching youth basketball, i would scold my parents and players for making remarks to the refs, telling them that was my job.. and as a coach, i finally realized there is little sense in arguing a call cause in all my early years of arguing those bad calls it was never reversed in my favor... i've learned to treat a bad call like a turnover--a turnover is a turnover, forget about it and move forward.. the kids need a forward leader.. the kind who says, "neva mind the call, this is what we need to do?

    ..just a thought..

I completely understand what Bill is trying to say. But realisticly there will always be arguments, gestures, ect. towards & between refs, coaches, players and spectators that is just human nature called "reaction" especially if it's not in there favor. If nobody reacted to a situation they would'nt be humans.

But then again there is a limit to where "How Far" a coach, player & spaectator can take it. And this is when the BIIF, Athletic Directors & Principals come in and do there part...
...Example: Disciplinary action from the ref (BIIF) did take place, Mattos did get a technical foul he continued on with his temper got a 2nd technical which got him ejected from that current game and suspended for the next game. The Athlectic Director & Principal also spoke with mattos & his parents what the rules are and what the consequences will be. So as far as stepping up and doing there parts I think it was done.

As far as accountability towards actions from the coaches, players & spactators that will totally be on "How Far" that person/individual would want to take it and then suffer the consequences.

    ...That is just my thaughts!

Way back in the day I remember when coaches and players never, ever addressed the refs. They just coached and played. When I played CC ball at Windward we never argued any calls, whether we agreed with them or not. Nowadays you even hear park and rec players crying all the time. Makes me sick.

Well from what my elders told me way back then on the big island you had players waiting after or during the game wanting to fight hand in hand, Vandelism & things being thrown on or at cars/buses (especially when it came where you had to play at country schools)that is a whole lot worse. If that was happening now there would'nt have basketball ball games going on.

So in reality if you compare back then to now I think it's a whole lot better. The difference is the word "RESPECT" alot of em don't have that and I think it's to do with the generation of now times. Before days you verbally disrespected your elders you betta run because you would get dirty lickings, Now days you do that to your kid or even say it to them they call CPS themselfs. So alot is to do with the discipline that is giving with there up bringing.

bill orear is right.referees are accountable.i have witnessed over the years calls made during games that changes the outcome of games. these calls were made by refs that takes things personally or dont know where to draw the line between what is and is not a foul or do but will not call it consistantly( mind you these are the experienced refs).to eject a player from a game,to me, would have to be an outright display of unsportsmanlike conduct that would be evident to all there. other than that a good seasoned ref would talk the situation down with all parties involved leaving them satisfied with the right decision.so yes, i hold the refs accountable as a fan
