I think HF would be the perfect coach. But he may have a better gig right now. Less pressure. But then again maybe Hi-Low will get the job and hopefully I can assist him. We will clean house and only play the boys that can shoot like Bird and pass like Pistol. What a team that would be. lol

RC -- It would be fun to coach with you, and with you (1/4) and me (3/4) we could combine to have "one" coaching brain. If we could get the players to shoot like Larry Bird, not Big Bird, pass like Pistol, Pete not Whipped, and defend like the late DJ -- Dennis Johnson, we might be competitive in ILH D-II.

Or we could both coach at Roosevelt, throw the ball out onto the court and tell Kaipo to just get it done. Then we'd win the OIA and pray for good things to happen in the state tournament. (lol)

Prep basketball, you've got to love it.

I would let you have 3/4 because then you could have 3/4 the blame.
Is that what went wrong last year, I didn't pray enough. I will remember that this year. lol

Whoever it will be, compassion, pride and character will be the main points of emphasis!

    @ menehunewater

I think Gary Pacarro is in the mix as well. They wanted HoopFanatic as te head Coach and BBJ to assist but only if they would continue to post on this site!

Not to take anything away from anyone who applied because I really don't know who did, but I think that Gary is the right choice. Very good coach and a good guy.

I applied for the job and during my interview I told them that I wouldn't do it for less than $162,599 per year. I also asked told them that I want to change the school colors from blue and gold to purple and gold and rename the team from the Buff n Blue to the Monarchs. I told them that I would need $254,869 for my staff's payroll, but I am open to negotiations on this amount.

The AD was actually perceptive to my proposal until I said that I would be hiring Hoop Fanatic, Ed, Hi-Low, Brian and RC as assistants. At that point, I was done.

Damn my bad Jones. I knew getting that tech in their tourney last year would come back to haunt me one day. We were about to get paid! Well back to the OIA I guess.

Okay, back to washing dishes at Zippy's for RC and me. Ed will continue his day job as a valet at the Roxy. Go figure.

BBJ!!! What's up!! Got any golf in lately?? No word from the Punahou Insiders this morning! Maybe if you put me in as the water boy/post game hibachi guy we could get that offer!

Hey guys...when one door closes, another opens.

In the meantime, back at the ranch...

@ Brian - No golf for me since you and I hit the links a few weeks ago. Thanks again for carrying me throughout the tourney...I told you I suck!

@ Hi-Low - John Starks, former NY Knicks guard, and Kurt Warner both were bag boys/courtesy clerks at Safeway...and this was AFTER college, mind you.

@ RC - It wasn't your tech that concerned them. It was my staff's personal daily calorie intake. They were worried that we would have mandated outrageous after game "snacks" from the parents. I mean, come on...this is Punahou. I didn't see anything wrong with rotating Alan Wong, Sam Choy, Roy Yamaguchi and Russell Siu for the coaches post-game "snack".

  15. Matsuda offers more than stability to Punahou

    http://www.hawaiiprepworld.com/basketball/matsuda-offers-more-than-stability-to-punahou/

    It’s not just about stability.

When Punahou hired Darren Matsuda to guide its boys basketball program on Friday, it was about reaching the pinnacle. The program now has its fourth coach in six years — astounding turnover for any team, let alone one at the No. 1-rated athletic department in the nation.

Enough Already. Paul you are deluded. Matsuda was hired by Ane for one reason...so that the stream of incredibly talented athletes can fortify Ane's football program. Kale Ane cares preeminently about this one thing and this one thing only. Darren has just made life easier for him. Ane has his Saturday's and Sunday's off and no long needs to be pounding the pavement (not sure if such a term applies at Punahou) looking for talent, if he ever did this in the first place.

For the naysayers and I think there are many, one of the comments may be "give the guy a chance to show what he can do". One of my points would be, the fact that he was given the position based on the coaching talent pool available is an abomination. Darryl Gabriel, Punahou 1979 comes to mind immediately. Even more perplexing is the spurning of Mike Taylor,on campus teacher, talented, dedicated, proven. Gary Pacarro, Punahou alum, experienced, not worthy of a shot? Why close the list of candidates to those that applied this time last year? Perhaps a little more effort and due diligence on the part of the AD's needed?

The important questions that any AD worth his salt must ask when making a hire as important as this are "what is in the best interest of the players in the program...what gives them the best chance of having a great experience?" Interests of alumni, parents, boosters, faculty are secondary...if the AD has the backbone to answer this question truthfully he has made the right decision when it comes to his coach.

Will the new coach be able to provide the "best possible experience for his players"? In some regards, possibly. Are there other coaches out there that could insure that this criteria be better satisfied...undoubtably.

As we all know hawaii is a football place and if Coach D can put the island on the map for basketball then lets give him a chance...Since this island is about the pig skin then for Coach D to be succesfull he has to go thru Ane like it or not its his school...If we let Coach D work his magic like he did with the sharks working yr by yr and now they are one of the maybe two club teams that can compete on the mainland. He may not be your favorite pick but he is succesfull in life, family and on the court (with the sharks) I think he will give the boys a great experience for life cuz we cant play forever.

  18. Julius, point taken. But really, if you're convinced that Coach Ane is concerned only about football, why would he hire a coach who has a history with basketball players like Malik Johnson? More so, since Malik clearly doesn't want to play football again, if your thesis was right, then Ane would NOT hire a coach with ties to the current players.

    >>> Ane hasn’t given up yet on getting Johnson back on the football field. He sees a near endless well of talent in the nimble, tall athlete.

However, if Johnson is going to play guard in the college ranks, he’ll need to improve his shooting range and backcourt skills. That may not happen if he spends each fall on the gridiron. Matsuda may have Johnson play guard this winter, a 6-6 ballhandling force rarely seen in the islands. <<<

You're pro-Mike Taylor, pro-Gary Pacarro. They're excellent coaches. I may consider them at a higher level than anyone else. I've seen what they've done without a major surplus of talent, and in Mike's case, I've seen what he can do with a healthy core of talent.

Either would've been a good choice.

Exactly...I would argue that they were the significantly better choice(s)...so the question then becomes why were they not chosen? Defies logic.

Regarding Malik...point taken, but at best he is a fringe football talent. I can think of 3 impact players who will be on Punahou varsity football team this year that are at the School through Matsuda's/Sharks efforts. All 3 of the players will definitely playing on Saturdays...2 have a chance to be playing on Sundays.

By the way, another 6'4 man-child in the 8th grade courtesy of Sharks connection. The evidence is there if you are willing to look for it.

  21. Yes, I know about Luke's brother, if I'm not mistaken. Is there something you find abnormal about that? Clubs and families have taken the path to private schools — pick the sport — for decades. You believe this is unusual?

I grew up with guys who said flat out that they were recruited, and they wound up at ILH schools to play basketball. We took it as an honor. Maybe you take that as immoral. I don't know. I'm a public-school graduate, but I have no reason to oppose anyone who wants to attend a private school, whether it's an institution at the top of the food chain or not.

Your assertion that Malik is a "fringe football talent" is severely off-center. At 6-6 with good hands, speed and athleticism, he could definitely develop into a formidable wide receiver given reps and time. It is/was an option. So is basketball, and it seems to me, from talking with him, that basketball is his true love.

    More power to him.

I don't get your last reply. Where did I ever say that recruiting was either unethical or immoral? My original point was that Matsuda was primarily chosen because he feeds Ane's football program with talented players. You did not agree with that contention.

I then backed up my point with 3 specific examples on the Varsity football team and noted the 8th grader as well. Okay, maybe Malik is more than a fringe football player...the point being is that Punahou football is "plus 3" because of Matsuda's association with Punahou. The "plus 3" are not typical "good" football recruits...they are freakishly talented individuals that are game and program changers.

sorry i dont see the connection with maliks football and darrens coaching resume. malik is an excellent athelete and person i have watched him grow from a clummsy young man with some promise to a young man that will have his choice of schools education etc. this didnt happen by accident it is due to maliks hard work, committment and great attitude and also his families unwavering support. we need to support all of our local athletes and accept and respect there choices, like maliks decision to concentrate on basketball. matsudas hiring was over due hes been there putting in the work. there maybe better coaches on paper but darren is the best fit at punahou and will be there for a while, congradulations coach darren, the only question i have is marcus going to be assistant coach and if so what about grant?no disrespect to coach taylor,he is definetly qualified but punahou probally wanted to keep the girls program strong.

I guess your definition of "work" is different than mine. Resume?... 4 whole years on the staff too huh? There are 4-5 basketball coaches who have been at Punahou for 10-20 years... dedicated to the kids, dedicated to the school, loyal, hard workers in the truest sense of the word, teachers of the game, savvy with X's & O's,selfless, coach for the right reasons...do I really need to keep going?

This doesn't seem to be a popular choice amongst the established coaches-- many of whom applied themselves. Unfortunately, DM will need the help of many of these people in making his own program successful.

As an aside, I think an AD needs to hire on campus teachers whenever possible.

There is some healing to do; some hurt feelings; some relationships to repair.

I wonder if DM is the type of person capable of bringing everyone together to hash it out and then move forward together. You certainly don't want the people that can most help you secretly rooting against you behind your back.
