what teams do you think will shine next season for the BIIF?

For the boys waiakea will be the favorite but needs a point guard to compete with top contenders around the state. Kealekehe will have one of the better sophomores in the state to build around in Jordan Ursua.

Rumor speculations is that the biif will implicate a rule that states NO TRANSFER WILL BE ALLOWED, Unless parents of a student has to relocate because of job or a court documentation of a guardianship of student from non parent.

As for the girls kona should single handedly win the biif

in my opinion, i think for the girls.. kea'au may do pretty well next season since they almost made states.. along with them can be waiakea and kona (of course)..
as for the boys.. i don't really know since i haven't really followed them this season..

Kona should win the girls DI and HPA girls DII. For the boys Waiakea and Keaau will battle for DI and St.Joesph and Kohala wiil represent the BIIF DII at States.

Who cares? Kona girls cheat to win. The boys haven't won since 2000.

KonaStyle I agree 100% with your comment about the Kona girls but I think the Kona boys won the BIIF last year and finished third at states.

for DII i agree with XLR8. HPA was the dominant team for that division. they don't lose their top 2 scorers.

so here's a question. if the rules do change, and galdera doesn't play for kona, do you really think that can change anything?
kona is a well rounded team. i'm just asking. do you think could do as well as they do now without her?

Without Galdeira they won't win states.

true. but if the rest of the girls work harder, i think they can do just as good.

Even if they work as hard, they won't do just as good. You can't replace a good player and just be as good with hard work.

Hard work helps, but talent helps a great deal too.

    i have to agree..
    hard work helps,
    like my coach said,
it doesn't take talent to hustle (or something like that)
but still.. you gotta have the talent to back it up

Nice topic. Only an opinion (4 fun). I feel Konawaena will take D1 again. I think they have a strong team. Wall, Missy, young Hanato Smith, Awa girls, another young Hanato joining the JV squad or she may just be a 7-8th grader (seems very talented (no one has seen her yet)don't know what school she will be attending, believe her district will send her to Konawaena. I have confidence in Missy to excel in basketball, she is so funny on the court, she just need a little more coordination, respect for the game, talent/hustle and she will be an ace on the team (she is only a sophmore). I'm hoping the girls will gain maturity and work towards their goals, they can take it to the next level. They are all such wonderful girls, so funny and so energetic. I'm hoping the Hilo teams can find their way and show us their ultimate/inner talent b/c we all know their history of wins. Goodluck!!!!

Curt- The next time you talk to Bill O'Rear please tell him that this years All-Biif boys and girls basketball team article maybe the worst job that the tribune Herald ever printed up. Who ever replaced bill's position while he was gone did a TERRIBlE job. Hey curt maybe you should apply for the job!

96720, I totally agree with you. I never saw a more terrible article then the article that I saw today. They had 8 first team players which is stupid, they had I believe 7 guards and 1 forward which is stupid, and they only had five honorable mention players. This was a total of 13 players out of the whole league being honored, which is I feel is ridiculous. In the past there was at least a first and second team, and at least a few players from each team as honorable mention. There was no players from Hilo or Kealakehe.

I would like to have seen a first and second team.

96720 give me your choices. 6 on the first team including the POY and 5 on the second team.

    POY- Leah Galdeira

    1st Team All-Biif

Kara Hanato-Smith The General and leader for the konawaena team. Her presence on the court was a plus especially when you have a talented team like kona this year. Only negative feature was that she did not excel in the states.
Dawnyelle Awa-Maybe the most versatile player in the Biif this year. She will be a better college player then Lia by the time they graduate
Kanisha Bello- The best shooter in the Biif by far. Reallly needs to work hard this off-season if she wants to take it to the next level. Only downfall this year was that she played like a junior and not a senior, At times did not have the killer instinct to take over and insisted on laying back and letting the game come to her.
Rayleen Naki-Was asked to lead her team this year, and thats what she did. If Kamehameha-Hawaii did what was expected and joined the d1 league the biif would of gotten 3 automatic berths in the states and you would of seen keaau joining kona and waiakea.
Leah Galdeira-If she plays all 4 years without getting hurt she will be the best player of all-time to have put on a jersey in the Biif. She really needs to work on her dribbling and outside shot if she wants to be a starter on a competitive D1 team.

If you went by position then i would of have Anuhea Wall as my center,Smith and Bello as the guards and Awa and Galdeira as the Forwards.

They should only be 5 players on the 1st team. Also POY is different then picking a MVP. Leah is the POY but i believe Hanato-smith was the MVP in the Biif.

come on West Hawaii Today hopefully you can do a better job then the Trubune Herald, Costco is right up the road from your facilities if you need photoshop or extra ink for the computers.

I agree the worst all-star printing ever!!! For 2009-2010 D1-girls KONA & WAIAKEA.. D2-girls KAMEHAMEHA, there only losing the top two scorers, not like this year when they lost all five starters, they just RELOAD and do it again... Oh and HPA.. Would like some feed back on what you guys think of KAMEHAMEHA being in D2. Please make some noise and get them to D1...

It is rare that a league gives recognition for both the POY and MVP, especially for high school. They normally give the POY.

My award for coach of the year/player of the year goes to the entire Kona Girls coaching staff.

kona girls coaching staff coach of the year?? with all the tlk bout letting a player out of district live wit her you still think they should b coach of the year! aha!

for me i think the pick for coach of the year was good. even if keaau didnt go states and didnt compete for BIIF, they did great. they came from the bottom and beat one of the contenders for the BIIF title.

Mark Kawaha was a good pick to coach of the year!

The BIIF season next year will go to the old East/West format. For the boys, the bulk of the talent will be on the east side as Waiakea, KS-Hawaii, Keaau, Hilo, St. Joe will fill a nice schedule. For the girls, Kona might be untested during the regular season as the West is made up of Kohala, Honokaa, Kealakehe, HPA and Kau.

96720...I believe the BIIF rule is that if a player transfers, they have to sit out 1 year in the sport(s) that they played at the previous school. This prevents players from transferring to better teams year to year.

Hey you never know, HPA, in my opinion could have a good run against Kona, since they haven't faced each other yet. But dang, its gonna go east/west.. that's gonna be lame,
i think, that each team should play everyone at least once, like how it was my freshman year. cause that was fun.

bigIsle- Like i said earlier, you are right with the 1 years sit out rule, but if i am not mistaken it states that if parents do have to relocate or if they have a court documentation of a guardianship to another adult that a student shall be able to transfer to another school and be able to play sports. Aloha

But wait. how can the big island go back to east/west when other islands are DI DII and that's how they do it for states?
